The proudest accomplishment in my educational career has been graduating with a college degree in a field I absolutely love. With all honesty, I cannot attest that I have always wanted to be a registered nurse. As my college transcripts reflect, I have taken a hodgepodge of classes in attempt to find something; anything I can be passionate about. I found that passion in my first nursing class, Introduction to Healthcare Careers, that I took at the community college. Initially, I planned on taking a few medical terminology and anatomy classes to assist me at work as a paralegal. At the time, I worked for an attorney who specialized in personal injury and medical malpractice law. I would work 40+hours a week at the law firm and nursing school/clinical hours were done on nights and weekends. I survived and graduated with my Associates degree in nursing.

There is an endless amount of possibilities an individual can go with a career in nursing. Nursing has plenty of specialties to choose from and nursing work is widely available throughout the world. It is personally rewarding and emotional to have an interactive relationship with the patients. This career allows nurses to get on a more personal level with the patients and provide comfort and bed care. Most importantly we can make a difference in patient's lives by bringing hope. Receiving a post-secondary education will benefit me by providing the knowledge and skills I need to become a skillful pediatric nurse. As a child, my passion was always to become a nurse to provide holistic care for children not only in my community but around the world to medically underserved populations. To reach my goal, I plan to attend Miami Dade college for two years at the medical campus to become a Registered nurse and earn my Associate of nursing degree, afterwards pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Posterior to graduate, I will transfer to the Duke University school of nursing in North Carolina to earn my Bachelor of science nursing degree.

Choosing a college major in college is a task that requires a lot of thought. A career that I decided to pursue is nursing. Nursing has multiple fields and career paths, and students must choose nursing career that fits them best. The three career paths that fascinate me the most are Correctional Nursing, Rehabilitation Nursing, and Nurse Anesthetist. ALTHOUGH NURSING REQUIRES EXCELLENT GRADES AND DETERMINATION, IT IS A VERY REWARDING MAJOR, WITH MANY DIFFERENT CAREER PATHS.

After researching many nursing careers there are three that are stick out. Although salary is a big deal today, one must be aware of the specifics of a job to make sure they enjoy the job. Three interesting nursing careers are nurse educator, traveling nurse and a pediatric nurse.

To be a nurse there are requirements it takes years for a lot of different types of nursing jobs. A high school diploma is required and a college degree, and go through training and earn a state license. To be a licensed nurse you have to have a practical nursing diploma, a nurse practitioner has to have a graduate degree. ADN or BSN and CEN comes with being a medical surgical nurse. (Study.com)

If one has a weak stomach, this career is not a good choice for them. Nursing is one of the most draining jobs there is out there but is also the most rewarding. A nurse may be treating a patient that has a common cold one day and the next they’re trying to save someone’s life.There are not a whole lot of jobs where one can actually save a life but this job is one of them.

Hospitals seemed to be my “home away from home” during my childhood. I had chronic kidney conditions and was always in and out of doctor’s offices, hospitals, and various other health care facilities. However, unlike most children who are terrified of doctor’s offices and blood work, I was intrigued. At an early age in my life I knew that when I grew up I wanted to help others, just as the many doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals had helped me. I just wasn’t sure what career would be a perfect fit.

I want to become a nurse not only to help people but because I saw nursing to be an opportunity to witness miracles, having a rewarding job, and to develop relationships along with nursing patients. I was lucky to have an opportunity to shadow a nurse when I came to visit a family member in the hospital. Even though I wasn’t able to do anything, I got to witness how a nurse works and how calm and poise they were when a patient needed help. For as long as I can remember I have always had the calling to help others and to assist those who cannot assist themselves. Ever since I was little I can remember always wanting to help take care of my family when they were sick, or soothing those who were in distress. However, I never considered nursing as a lifetime career until this year. Frustrated with myself for just now realizing nursing is what I have been called to do, I am working hard to catch up and get ahead. I am motivated to succeed and I am taking every opportunity I can grab and using it to better myself and prepare me to become a great future nurse. For example, this summer I am planning on taking the American Red Cross CNA training so that I can begin the start of my career and obtain as much experience as soon as possible. Also, I have found great opportunities to shadow family practitioners and nurses to ensure that nursing is where I am meant to be. As a result of these job shadowing’s, it has not only shown me a glimpse of the nursing field, but has confirmed that this is the career I am meant to be in.

My desire to pursue the field of nursing stems from my fascination on giving support to those in need. Working in the customer service industry has helped me develop essential skills needed as a nurse. Such as, giving good customer service, having patience with an upset customer, and having the ability to solve an issue accordingly. Some of the qualities that I admire in nurses are empathy and quick thinking while being under tremendous pressure.  

I like to think with nursing you truly never know what is going to happen at any given point of time but you will have the ability to make quick decisions, learn something new each day and most importantly, make a difference in a patient’s life. Also, I firmly believe my passion for nursing increased when my great grandmother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Throughout my great grandmother’s journey with cancer, the nurses have been the ray of sunshine during a time of darkness.

I did not choose to become a nurse, I always wanted to be one, and despite all the obstacles I encountered all along my path, I made it to the TAMUCC nursing program. In my youth, I enjoyed taking care of my ill grandmother, from age thirteen to age eighteen. Tending to the needs of my chronically ill grandmother had influenced and shaped my career decision to become a nurse. I saw the impact my presence had on her, and how happy she was when she had me around. She died two years later from cancer. I felt like if I was still around, holding her hands, talking, and singing to her, she would have lived longer than those two years.
