The practice of nursing informatics is used as a tool help support consumers, healthcare professionals including nurses, doctors and the patients they serve and others in their decision making roles so that the desired outcomes are achieved. With the use of information structures, information processes and information technology this support is accomplished. Information plays an integral role in the quality of nursing practice and is a key factor that leads to effective decision making. Much of what we do as nurses today involves information from assessing the health care needs of our patients, to creating care plans, to passing on patient information to other health care professional.
