Nursing Mission Statement Analysis

An organizations existence is based on its mission statement. The mission statement of an organization identifies the people who it serves and states the standards of practice, ethics, and principles for which it believes in. An organization’s vision statement looks into the future and states goals the organization wishes to accomplish (Marquis & Huston, 2012). The mission and vision statement are important for driving the climate and culture of the organization.

A nurse has the power and privilege to help patients who are hurting, both emotionally and physically. My mission is to be part of the solution by becoming a well-trained nurse through continuous educational and medical pursuits. For instance, I am actively pursuing volunteer and employment opportunities to work with the underserved because it is a true passion of mine. Furthermore, I personally relate to the dent that a shortage of staff leaves in its wake because I used to live in an underserved community and was forced to move to New York due to my son’s medical condition. American Nurses Association (ANA) is a professional nursing organization representing 3.6 million registered nurses in the United States (ANA, About ANA, 2017). Formed over 100 years ago in 1911, ANA has been growing its membership and expanding its role in the nursing community. The association has a simple mission statement, “ Nurses advancing our profession to improve health for all” (ANA, American Nurses Association 2015 Annual Report, 2015, p. 1). While ANA has a simple mission statement, the role of nursing organizations in the United States is not a simple task. Nursing is an evolving profession with many aspects.

E. Applied Leadership E.2.a I thoroughly enjoyed the Professional Roles and Values course because there were several key things I could utilize in my career. Information from professional nursing organizations was informative and can give new nurses a guideline of the expectations from a professional nurse. New nurses are usually lost when they are right out of nursing school and do not realize the expectations and responsibilies of being a professional even when they are not in the work place. The class renewed my beliefs as a professional nurse about professionalism in the community, interactions with others, decision making, and positive compassionate attitude of a nurse. Like most other professions, nursing is controlled by government regulatory agencies and professional organizations. For instance, boards of nursing in various states are the government entities mandated to regulate nursing at the state level, while the American Nurses Association is a professional organization that governs nursing at the nation level. Regulatory agencies and professional organizations are guided by the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.

Every individual typically holds a personal philosophy about life which includes beliefs and values that help shape our choices and lead us to specific life path or in a certain direction. Very similarly every nurse has a philosophy about nursing and their career. Every nurse has guidelines that they choose to follow and motives for why certain choices are made. In order to develop a philosophy of nursing a nurse must reflect on the characteristics that they abide by and by which they base their nursing care. A nursing philosophy defines the motives behind why the nurse puts their heart and soul into their career. A personal nursing philosophy produces an individual viewpoint for nursing care, research, and education (Hood, 2014). In order to have a personal philosophy or a nursing philosophy, a nurse needs to understand themselves. Not one philosophy is permanent, right, or wrong and a personal philosophy is subject to change at any time (Hood, 2014).

Nursing is one of the strongest and most well-rounded professions in today's healthcare system. A blend of art, science, and practice, nurses treat, prevent disease and illness, protect, and advocate for their patients (Wilson, 2005). As the American Nurses Association (2003) defines nursing as: Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.

A company's vision is a "general statement of its intended direction that evokes emotional feelings in organization members." (Dessler, 2003). The mission statement determines the type of business it will be by setting the purpose for the company, and

Philosophy is a set of ideas, values, and beliefs behind what a person does (Merriam- Webster Dictionary, 2015). All nurses have beliefs about what nursing is and is not. It is important to stay true to one’s personal, moral, and ethical values at all times. Nurses are morally and ethically responsible for their patients, decisions, and actions (Lindh, Barbosa, Berg, & Severinsson, 2010). Every nurse brings something different to healthcare because they have different philosophies and/or believe in different nursing theories that guide their practice.

I believed in your mission statement, especially, this part, “dedicated to provide high-quality, accessible medical care to underserved communities, regardless of their inability to pay.” I also believed that community health nursing is one of the best ways to reach the most vulnerable and under-served in our society. The reason why I decided to go back to school to become a nurse practitioner was based on my community health care experiences from volunteering in a community based family clinic that served low-come population and doing my community hours during my BSN program. A philosophy is created to find truth and meaning. It requires evaluation and use of critical thinking as to why one’s nursing practice matters. The history of philosophy and theories allows me to evaluate my personal nursing philosophy. I believe that each person is their own individual. My way of practicing nursing is by using compassion, listening to my patients and trying to understand them. It is not just the body or the disease but rather the holistic nature of the patient. I believe that nursing deals with promotion of health and prevention of disease. Lifelong education, research and evidence based practice are all utilized in my profession of nursing and are all concepts important to my nursing care.

Philosophy has influenced the development of nursing. Philosophy of Nursing promotes the application of nursing knowledge and helps develop nursing theory and knowledge. Nursing theories and philosophies of nursing influence each other. Nurses designed Philosophy of nursing to explain the beliefs, role, and interaction with patients. Philosophy is the application of one 's knowledge to different situations that occurs when practicing as a nurse. It changes the identities, belief systems, and practices of nurses. Philosophies and experiences guide nurses in their professional decision making. (Marchuk, 2014). To be able to articulate a personal philosophy of nursing and identify the philosophical influences, nurses must have basic understanding past contribution to the theories and philosophies that have helped shaped nursing today. Knowledge development and different methods have played a huge part in nursing 's history.

The mission statement communicates to stakeholders the main activities that the company focuses on in order for it to achieve its vision. The mission statement communicates to employees’ information on how to conduct their day to day activities. The mission statements also describe the organizations, policies, culture as well as ethics (Alesia 2013).
