The committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing did a substantial amount of work that eventually resulted in the "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health" report. Quite specifically, this organization was responsible for performing the research that many of the measures of this report were based on. The Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing went to the Institute of Medicine and analyzed a number of different data that pertained to the healthcare industry, governmental entities (both at the state and federal levels) and nurses, in particular, before determining a number of specific recommendations that would ultimately provide a positive effect if not a radical transformation for the healthcare industry in the United States.

The image of the nursing profession is on the rise due to development in political, environmental, cultural, and social areas. This involves addition of women into the profession of nursing to instill the needed care to patients. The implementation of technology and education in relation to the nursing profession proves to be effective and efficient in the current health condition, in the nation. Education helps to prepare nurses for their roles and expectations. This allows them to execute their roles and responsibilities perfectly thus the highly trusted health professional group. Extensive research and clinical approaches also act as components to indicate the strides towards development in relation to the nursing profession. Research actions enable nurses to determine the source of their previous problems thus opportunity to revive themselves. The United States Health care system is in the mist of converting to a preventative, health management focus system from a treatment focused system. (AJN, American Journal of Nursing: 2010). The Affordable Healthcare ACT (ACA) of 2010 introduced new changes to United States healthcare system. These changes were the improvement of research and evidence-based practice, health awareness, prevention screenings, and community-based wellness promotion and applied. (Affordable Care Act, 2010) Before the IOM’s action-oriented blueprint nurses came up against barriers that prevented them from being able to the start to make those transformations. Today nurses have the potential to overcome obstacles by leading innovative strategies to transform nursing education, practice, and leadership. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is a nonprofit organization that works independently, provides unbiased and authoritative advice to general public as well as government. Acute care nursing is by far the most interesting and exciting field I have yet to encounter. There are a couple areas for improvement, and there a couple areas that I have exceeded in. With that being said, the first area of improvement is knowledge of the pathophysiology of the most common diseases seen in the emergency department. The second area of nursing that needs improvement is the titration of intensive care unit medications. Two strengths that I can identify are as follows: patient safety, such as hygiene, and patient safe communication.
