It is essential as a Registered Nurse and nursing student to ensure that a comprehensive safe and quality of practice is achieved, resulting in goals and outcomes being met positively improving the nursing needs of people. This standard is important to my scope of practice, as being a nursing student it is for me to ensure goals and outcomes are being achieved to ensure the safety and wellness to those I am caring for.

It is important to integrate the concept professionalism into your nursing career because it allows you to flourish personally as a nurse but more importantly allows the patient to receive the care they deserve. Throughout the course of one’s nursing career there will be many slips and falls. Mistakes will happen but we as nurses are able to reflect and learn from them in a

In modern days all nurses have to obtain the bachelor of nursing degree to become a registered nurse. So universities and polytechnics are the main providers of nursing degree. They are closely supervised by the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) to ensure the compliance with the requirements of competencies for registered nurses. In New Zealand before you can practice you have to obtain the registration from NCNZ through passing the states final and being fit to practice. Fit to practice means you have to be of a good character, speak good English, and have to acquire the necessary knowledge (NCNZ, n.d.). Also nurses have to provide selfless service and think about the nursing profession when they represent themselves in the society. As any other profession nursing has to abide to the code of ethics. It consists of set of values which applies to nurse- client relationship, nurse-colleague, nurse-organization and nurse-society relationships. They all include autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, confidentiality, veracity, fidelity, guardianship of the environment and its resources, being professional in the context with the above relationships (New Zealand Nurses Organization, 2010). Nurses must display a knowledge of skills by portraying a functional ability to assess, treat, and prevent illness in the clinical setting. “The nurses are obliged to gain specialized knowledge, skills and training through the rigorous study of biological, physical and behavioral sciences and then use this knowledge to diagnose and treat patients suffering from different ailments. The patients treated must be under the supervision of skilled medical practitioners and the nurse must be equally directed by the expert medical practitioner. The prevention and management of illnesses, injury and ailments also forms some of the major tasks that have to be carried out by nurses. The purpose of this paper is to explore the transitional shift from practical nurse to professional nurse. We have utilized several resources detailing the scope of practice for the professional nurse, and explain in detail the new types of roles we will encounter as RN’s.

The professionalism goal that I set was to develop a preceptorship program for my clinic that would provide socialization, team support, and clearly defined expectations of professional behavior and performance for new nursing staff. To achieve this goal, my plan was to seek

Nurses develop professional skills through a process called “Professionalization.” Ghadirian uses four factors to describe this; cognitive dimension, attitudinal dimension and psychomotor dimension. They then further describe the cognitive dimension as the “professional knowledge” a nurse must have (2014). Without knowledge of illness or the human body, a nurse can not practice professionally. Ghadirian then suggests that even with extensive professional knowledge, a nurse can not be professional without the ideals and ethics of a nurse, or the ability to provide care (2014). A nurse can not be professional without all the dimensions. A nurse must have the values of a nurse, knowledge of a nurse and the ability to provide care.

The CNO outlined professional standards for nurses to comply with. The seven that are outlined are accountability, continuing competence, ethics, knowledge, knowledge application, leadership, and relationships. “A standard is an authoritative statement that sets out the legal and professional basis of nursing practice” (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009, p. 3). Although each standard has different meaning, they all work together in order to provide the best possible patient care.

There are many differences in functions of a regulatory board of nursing such as the Illinois Board of Nursing (IBN) and a professional nursing association such as the Hospice and Palliative Nurse Association (HPNA). The Illinois Board of Nursing functions as the licensing body for professional nursing, regulatory enforcer and where complaints about nurses or nursing practice can be addressed. It’s role is to protect the public safety in regards to nursing and it’s practice (Cherry & Jacob, 2010). The role of the HPNA is one of advocacy for it’s members and their profession, including lobbying for laws and

American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Professional Performance explains how all registered nurses do their work and activities consistently according to their professions that promote the wellbeing of their patients and communities (ANA, 2010a). The standards provide a mechanism to patients that they are been taken good care of and that the nurses know exactly what to do so as to provide high-quality care and the measures are in place to determine whether nursing care meets the standards. These activities are related to performance like ethics, quality of practice, education, communication, resources, leadership, environmental health, professional practice evaluation, and evidence-based practice and research. Registered nurses are responsible for their professional actions to themselves, their patients, their peers, and the community at large.

Professional practice models can help guides nursing practice in any healthcare setting. Nursing care models are commonly adopted by Magnet organizations because they promote staff autonomy, shared decision making, patient-centeredness, and quality care. Nurses most often develop PPMs which reflect not only nursing values but the organization’s values as well. This paper will explore several elements of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s (BWH) Professional Practice Model (PPM). First, the model’s fundamental nursing framework will be identified. Next, a brief discussion on how the model promotes patient-centeredness, evidence-based practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration will be presented. Lastly, a summary of how the model fosters quality, safety, informatics, shared governance and leadership will be reviewed.

A professional nursing practice is predicated on many tenets, which ensure optimal functionality and growth. A successful organization requires the systematic employment of ethical values, as well as structural, organizational and relational leadership. In essence, a nursing practice must fortify its corporate structure, productivity, operational flow, and professional relationships in order to thrive. The purpose of an organizational meeting is to address the foundational elements of a successful practice. Along with delineating guidelines, a meeting should reinforce structure, a unified sense of purpose, and address lingering issues.

The Professional Performance Standard of leadership by the American Nurses Association 's Standards of Professional Nursing Practice (2010) states, “the nurse professional demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession" (ANA, 2010). The definition of leadership in relation to the nursing profession is defined as; “Leadership refers to the ability to guide, motivate, and inspire, and to instill vision and purpose” (Ellis & Hartley, 2012). The application of leadership in the profession of nursing involves the ability for the nurse leader to “influence the beliefs, opinions, or behaviors of others and to persuade others to follow your direction” (Ellis & Hartley, 2012).

Nightingale said, “The very first requirement in a hospital is that it should do the sick no harm”. The history of nursing initially begins with Florence Nightingale. Before her era nurses had a tarnished reputation (Glasper, 2017). They were poorly educated and incompetent people. Nurses such as Mrs. Bedford Fenwick wanted to change the image of nursing. They did this by leading a campaign for professionalism. Which led to the culminated Nurse Bill receiving is royal assent in December 1919 (Glasper, 2017). July 27, 1921 was the official opening of the nursing register, there are currently 688,927 nurses registered with the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) (Glasper, 2017). The NMC code has four themes of professionalism, “Prioritizing
