Nursing is defined as “as an application of scientific knowledge enhanced by artful practice in a socially responsible manner.” (Gregory 5). Nurses provide leadership as members of interdisciplinary teams, provide client centered care to promote health, prevent disease, and restore and maintain client integrity throughout the life span. (Krannich 71). This makes it one of the most interesting professions, in my opinion.

The career of a Registered Nurse is fulling and rewarding because one is taking care of others. The research will describe the career of a registered nurse, what is required to become successful and the impact this career has on society.

According to American Nurses Association nursing can be defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness”. (American Nurses Association 2016) Nursing is a career where a person, should have compassion, a caring heart, and be devoted to their client care. Sometime person goes into the nursing field for the money, job stability, and because a person 's family member wants them to go into the nursing field. I feel like the future of nursing have yet to be determined.

As time changes so does the nursing profession. From the early 1900’s until now nursing has evolved and has become more complex and well educated. Due to technology, advanced medicine, and having more skills acquired nursing has blossomed into a worthy profession. From caregiving, being a decision maker, communicator, patient advocate, and teacher nursing has more then one role in patient care.

Nursing has not always been the type of career that it is today. Florence Nightingale made a huge impact on nursing. Louise Selanders wrote an article explaining Nightingale’s life, all the accomplishments she made, and all the ways she impacted modern nursing. In the article, she explains the history of how nursing became such a big deal. War, especially the Crimean War, is what really moved the career to a whole other level. Florence Nightingale was chosen to lead a bunch of nurses in the military’s medical establishments. According to Selanders when Nightingale arrived the conditions were “filthy, and inadequate” but once Florence arrived she turned it all around, she taught all of the nurses how to properly care for the patients and completely turned the conditions around. Florence greatly increased the survival rate of the war soldiers because of her immense knowledge on the subject. So, after the war she began writing textbooks and opened the very first nursing school. Florence began the revolution of nursing. Making it a much more valued and important career. Over the years new discoveries, and advancements in science and technology have greatly changed the nursing profession. Making it possible for many lives to be saved.

Nursing has changed over time from the instruments that are used, the process that procedures are done, and many medical advances. Nursing back in the Florence Nightingale days did not have specialties like we do today either. Nursing has a whole has progressed significantly since then. I believe that the history of nursing is important because we as nurses need to know where we come from and how this profession became what it is today. To begin, going to school to be a registered nurse is an exceptional choice. The demand for nurses is high and only keeps growing every day. There will always be a need for nurses and doctors. Going to school to be a nurse is a significant choice because nurses/doctors will always be needed somewhere in the world. No matter where a nurse decides to live they could most likely get a job in that line of work. Since there is a high demand for nurses and doctors more and more jobs will be provided as the years go on. It is a career where a nurse can feel secure in their area of work. Nurses could also go to different countries and help patients from all over the world, which would give a nurse a great chance to travel. Nursing has endless job opportunities.
