Everyone is having fun when suddenly a mysterious Green Knight interrupts the celebration and proposes a challenge, which was accepted by Gawain. That is the story of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, an alliterative poem written in the mid to late fourteen century. Little is known about who wrote the poem, but most scholars refer to him as the “Pearl Poet.” The poem is part of medieval romantic tradition that tells the tale of a young knight’s journey. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was written in North or West Midlands dialect and is referred to as one best Middle Age romance stories. The story depicts the ethical orientation and the social context of Arthurian Romance and the ideology of English chivalry. Chivalry (chevalerie) is a French term that means “Skills to handle a horse,” but after the first crusades chivalry became more of an honor code to an ideal knight. Sir Gawain and The Green Knight is not only an adventurous tale but is also a test for Gawain’s character and a test of his adherence to the knight’s code of chivalry. The Code of Chivalry includes qualities such as honor, love, and humility. In the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the author uses different types of symbolism to demonstrate the theme of the nature of chivalry.
As a course of life, people are born, raised, and go to school until the time comes where they need to make a decision about their career. In fact, most careers have one common theme among them---Help or give back to community and society. I for one have chosen a career in nursing to help people and give back to my community.
