What is critical thinking? Critical thinking is defined as “disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence” (Dictionary.com, 2017). It is used in everyday occupations, regardless of position, workers from plumbers to nurses use critical thinking during their work day. Throughout the work day nurses must use critical thinking effectively in order to excel at their career. Such measures are taken such as, who should receive treatment first, which medications would benefit the patient, or should more steps be taken to assure a patient’s safety? These questions can be answered with the knowledge nurses have learned in training combined with critical thinking. It is essential for the work place and every day decisions which may or may not have great impacts on one’s own life or others and also allows one to better themselves through achievement and using logic based on critical thinking. The ability to better one’s self is very valuable in today’s society, just as valuable as the skill of critical thinking. This process of thinking helps those who use it correctly make wise decisions. Critical thinking is essential in occupations, everyday life, and advancing one’s self. Critical thinking in general is essential in many occupations, and also may help one advance their position within their place of work.
