Nursing Theorist Assignment

Sister Callista Roy developed the Adaptation Model of Nursing in 1976 after becoming concerned of the importance of relating the characteristics of nursing to the community. This interest encouraged her to begin developing the model with the purpose of nursing being to support adaptation. Roy began organizing her nursing theory as she developed curriculum for nursing students at Mount St. Mary’s College.

| Health-According to Roy, health is a state and process of being and becoming integrated and whole that reflects person and environmental mutuality (“Boston College”, 2010). Roy also views health as a manifestation of the person’s relations with and adaptation to the changing environment. Effective adaptation involves the person’s goals such as survival, growth, and mastery (Andrews & Roy, 1991). Roy views health from the Totality approach since the person has health as a goal and is consciously seeking optimal health. In the Totality Approach, health is dynamic and is a process towards well-being (Parse, 1987). | Roy includes adaptation in her views of a person’s health. Each person has adaptive responses that promote survival, reproduction, mastery, and personal and environmental transformation (“Boston College”, 2010). A person will also have ineffective responses that do not promote the well-being in terms of the goals of the human system.
