Theory A theory encompasses a cluster of concepts which descried a set or pattern of reality (Taylor, Lillis, Lynn, 2011, p. 27). A set of concepts that follow a logical pattern makes up a model (Taylor, et al., 2011, p. 27). The model makes up a set of steps which follow a blue print that tells an individual what the next step should be (Taylor, et al., 2011, p. 27). Nursing theories are ones that are specific to the nursing career field and allows nursing to be established as its own professional entity similar to the medical doctor profession (Taylor, et al., 2011, p. 27). Nursing theories are used in research to determine the best means of improving care of patients in the health care system (Taylor, et al., 2011, p.27). These theories describe,

According to the American Nurses Association (ANA, 2010) an “APRNs are registered nurses (RN) who have acquired advanced specialized clinical knowledge and skills to provide health care” (p. 112). APRN is a general term used to describe certified registered nurse anesthetist, certified nurse midwife, clinical nurse specialist, and nurse practitioners (NP) (ANA, 2010). For the purpose of this paper and my personal theory and philosophy, I will focus on the NP as the APRN. NPs are able to perform comprehensive assessments and promote health and prevention of illness and injuries (ANA, 2010). The ANA’s concepts of health promotion and disease prevention have helped shape my personal theory and aided in identifying a theory for my future practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The best theory to guide my practice will be Nola J. Pender’s health promotion model (HPM). By using Pender’s HPM, it will allow me to identify each patient as an individual with different needs for health promotion and disease management.

A nurse uses nursing theories to provide or direct patient care (Ryan, 2009). Middle range theories are easy to apply. They can guide nursing care, change conditions to help improve nursing care. These theories can help interpret behavior and situations. They also help to understand relations between diagnosis, interventions, and outcomes (McEwen & Wills, 2014). The Integrated Theory of Health Behavior Change is a new midrange theory. It utilizes social, behavior and bioscience theories. The application of this theory allows health behavior change in a health care setting. Knowledge promotion, self-regulation, and social facilitation are essential to change the health behavior (Ryan, 2009).

Nursing Theory Nursing is a unique profession which is built upon theories that guide everyday nursing practice. In nursing, caring should be placed high on our priority list for our nursing practice. As nurses we must develop knowledge on research outcomes for the foundation of nursing practice. Consequently the grown and the certification of nursing theory will aid in the establishment of nursing practice. It is a source of specific individuality as it guides nursing education, research, practice, and distinguishes nursing practice from other disciplines.

Application of Nursing Theory Nursing theories are a great framework in nursing practice and assists in the positive impact in patient care. According to Kuhrik, Laub, Kuhrik, & Atwater (2011), there are thoughts that in the future nursing will embark on some challenges especially oncology, due to the fact of an aging population among the elderly.
