If you were to go to a restaurant, you would want to know what the nutritional values of the food were, would you not? The labels you see on bags of potato chips or a drink are called nutritional labels (also known as food labels), which show you how much calories, proteins, fats, or a lot more that the item has. In fact, the government made it illegal to make products to sell at stores without the nutritional label. Did you know that restaurants are not required by law to have a label on any of their products? The government needs to make a law to make restaurants put the nutritional values on their foods.
Portion sizes in America have grown tremendously over the past decades, according to Erica Goode in her article “The Gorge-Yourself Environment”; I have researched her assertions and intend to demonstrate that she is right. People now tend to eat larger portion sizes instead of the recommended serving sizes. Numerous health concerns have become more common for people who overeat. With the entertainment industry in full swing, food advertisements have made their way into our homes making food look more enticing than what it truly is. Americans gave become oblivious to the amount of food that is on their plates.
When going out to eat at a restaurant, people prefer to recieve their money's worth in the food they order. That typically comes down to portion sizes. as unhealthy as it is, most people do not know the proper portion and tend to eat the entire meal that is presented to them. While, at home, when families cook the meal themselves, the portions are smaller due to the recommended serving size of the meal. Most restaurants are guilty of serving anywhere from double to triple a normal food portion. Portion control is an important part in food. That makes it important to understand what a recommended serving size is for the food prepared is, and only ordering that amount. When families prepare their meals at home, they are able to control what goes on the plate, and what not to eat. Eating out at restaurants are typically portioned excessively, and some dishes can contain an entire day’s worth of calories.
Food safety and grocery costs are two important issues to me and thousands of others here in the U.S. That's why I would like you to support a new piece of legislation, known as the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act.
The patient is overwhelmed with shopping in the grocery store and lacks confidence and skills in the kitchen; the teaching method use to help the patient is the demonstration method. This teaching method will actually perform an operation and show the patient how and what to do at grocery store. The reason this teaching method in this particular case was chosen is because it will be effective and the patient can see, hear, discuss and participate in the demostration1, and it is simple and easy to understand. However, this teaching method will help the patient understand the difference between item price and unit price to determine which is less expensive on per unit basis and learn common measures used for foods.
In Pollans article he shows us how food labeling is n important aspect of our lives today because its one of the only things we have to distinguish what is truly in our food. The labels are now required so we can know what ingredients are in our food and how many calories are in the food. Pollans also shows us on how food is directly affected to our health. Kessler tells us how eating can cause extreme obesity and in our society. The reason we have major obesity in our society is because all of the food we eat now causes some sort of stimuli in our brain that makes us want to eat more and more. To me, nutrition fact labels are a way to judge nutrition, calorie count, and percent daily value of specific nutrients. I use these labels to see how many calories are in a specific food and to compare one similar product to another. When I look at these labels, I am looking for the amount of fat, carbs, calories, and calcium along with other vitamins per serving. I also look at how much is in a serving, how many servings are in a package, and how much sodium is in a product. The nutrition fact labels are also used when I cook. I judge what to put in my creations by how much nutrients and fat are in certain products as to not raise the calorie count too much. Some poeple have bad health issues and if they intake or not get enough fat or calories then they could die or become really sick.
Today we have to be careful with what we eat. We have to watch for our diet and take care of ourselves by not gaining too much weight. If you 're like most people, you trust the label without a second thought and proceed to checkout. But do you really know what you are putting into your body? How can you know if you never checked the nutritional information? Nutrition labels are important because they can be the determining factors in a healthy longevity. The nutrition label is imperative because it helps you make healthier food choices, it emphasizes the importance of nutrition, and it is key to a thorough health.
This past week I have been made more aware of my food choices. Now this isn’t to say I ate the healthiest or ate nutritious foods. However, I was able to recognize what was healthy and what wasn’t. I believe looking at the food’s nutrition labels help greatly. This helped me to become more aware and understand the food’s I ate. I began to think a lot more about my food choices versus just throwing food in my mouth without thinking about the consequences. Of course, there were times when I did just throw food in my mouth. However, I noticed the time when this occurs is when I did not eat a breakfast, and I had just had a stressful morning, whether it was work or school. Lunch time is probably the worst time for eating. I am usually starving, stressed, tired and want something quick and easy. Hence, the reason I order out. I noticed the past couple weeks I have had a bad habit of doing so. Afternoons are always the hardest because around 2 pm I crash. I usually compensate this by drinking tea, or eating sugar. I know neither are good for me, and the sugar rush I get will only lead me to crash in 15 mins. However, in the moment, I think “Well, I’m already about to crash, so at least this sugar rush will give me more 15 minutes of productivity”. It’s horrible thinking I know. Right around late afternoon is when I feel I need caffeine or sugar to get me through.
