Nwoye's Hope

Desmond Tutu once said, “Hope is being able to see there is light despite all of the darkness.” What Tutu is trying to say is that if someone can shut out all of the negatives then they have hope. This is similar to the way Achebe describes hope through Nwoye, he shows us that Nwoye finds hope despite all of the darkness in his life. In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Nwoye is treated terribly by his father because of his lack of manliness. When Christian missionaries come to Umuofia Nwoye finds hope. Nwoye’s identity is changed when he discovers the westerner’s ideas because he had felt abused until he found Christianity, Achebe is telling the audience that there is always hope because Nwoye found his. We see that Nwoye is treated poorly by his father, this is shown to us when Nwoye is just twelve and his dad shows negative feelings towards him. We see events through Okonkwo’s point of view early on in the novel, “Okonkwo’s first son, Nwoye, was then twelve years old but was causing his father great anxiety for his incipient laziness. At any rate, that was how it looked to his father, and he sought to correct him by constant nagging and beating. And so Nwoye was developing into a sad faced youth” (Pages 13-14). Nwoye is beaten and treated poorly because he does not live up to his father’s standards, and this is what starts him on a path of sorrow. Nwoye found hope in Christianity and made a life for himself. We see this when Mr. Brown tells Okonkwo that, “He had just sent Okonkwo’s son, who was now called Isaac, to the new training college for teachers in Umuru” (Page 182). Nwoye’s neglect is ended because of the removal of his father coupled with his newfound faith. Through this Achebe shows us that there is hope to be found, regardless of the challenges in between. Through the progression of the novel we see that Nwoye finds hope, throughout the novel he is beaten, neglected, and deserted but through perseverance he finds
