• The capstone report that I decided that I wanted to read is Nydera A. Washington class of 1995. Her topic is My Family Tree. The items that make up her honors portfolio are as follows; All In The Family, An Unforgettable Summer, The Ethics of Medicine, Deadly Temptation, The Evolution of Gospel Music, An Honor’s College Reflection. I absolutely enjoyed reading Ms. Washington capstone and not because she is originally from New Jersey. Ms. Washington begins her capstone examining her ancestor background. She sums up her family’s success in the last paragraph by stating, “my family has both triumphed and struggled, some courageously faced the oppression of their day […] embracing arms of the white race.” Washington moves on to discuss one of her worst summers at the University of Rochester. She participated in this research since her freshman and she felt that she did considerably well. However, the energy was very negative at the predominantly white institutions. When she spoke about her goals and aspirations in a learning environment she was frowned upon. Next she conducted a study using diagrams on Pyrazolones using three parts. She continued a research assignment based on the Ethical Issues In Medicine Reproductive and Genetic Technology. She believes that some technological advancements can be detrimental …show more content…
Clay honors portfolio because of the adversity she has faced and overcame. Although she was teased growing up and her best friend past away from a car accident, she did not let this hinder her. When I read success stories it inspires me to preserve through my struggles. Essentially what I got from this capstone is that it does not matter what is on the outside it’s who is on the inside. • “The Skin I am In” is the exact antithesis of the first capstone I’ve read. I thought it was very organized , and everything flowed from her skin condition. This capstone was also easy to understand and soak in. 3rd
My chapter 5 project is about Dr. Elijah White. Elijah was born in 1806 in New York State. White is known for being a great physician and his missionary work in the Oregon Country. He attended medical college in Syracuse, New York. Sent by the Methodist church, he soon left New York to go to the Oregon country to be the physician and missionary of their operations there. He was sent to Willamette Valley, Oregon in 1836 to take part in Methodist mission there lead by Jason Lee, but had some difficulties on the way. Elijah and his family, wife and two kids, went to the Sandwich Islands arriving in 1836 and taught the Natives until May, 1837 and then continued to Oregon. The Sandwich Islands, discovered by Captain Cook, is present day Hawaii.
While compiling this portfolio, it allowed me to reflect on the challenging work and the deep commitment that I have put forth to finish this degree. I cannot help but be proud of my accomplishments,
For my cultural cache book report I chose to read the book, The Color of Water by James McBride. I learned several things about what life was like in the mid-1900’s and in which may be why we still face issues with racial differences. McBride does a great job of illustrating his internal and external challenges that he faces throughout his life. I also learned more about African American culture in the United States and gave me a desire to be a part of positive change to this particular racial group.
The turn of the 20th century was a time of great optimism and anxiety ("1900: A Year in the Life of America." - Genealogy.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Aug. 2015.). There were constant advancements in technology and new products being made all the time, making life much easier ("1900: A Year in the Life of America." - Genealogy.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Aug. 2015.). This better life attracted immigrants from all over ("1900: A Year in the Life of America." - Genealogy.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Aug. 2015.). Sadly, for many of them as well as natives, the only work they could get was mediocre with poor working conditions, long hours, and small paychecks ("1900: A Year in the Life of America." - Genealogy.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 06 Aug. 2015.). The same can be said for the Nolan family from “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”. Francie Nolan, an Irish-American girl growing up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, doesn’t let her family’s poverty drag her down ("Analysis of Major Characters." SparkNotes. SparkNotes, n.d. Web. 19 Aug. 2015.). The story
The reading selection by Dr. Tameka Bradley Hobbs was every intriguing. I knew lynching and slavery is a very big deal when teaching African-American history. However, I did not know that there were many documented events in history that happened in the sunshine state that I live in. Such as, the events that were explained about Claude Neal, Mary Turner, organizations under NAACP, other activist and famous leaders on page 97 through 101. The only thing that I specifically remembered was the tragedy with Rose Wood reasons being that my mother brought the movie home and explained to
It shows me that I must succeed not only for me but for my family seeing as only me and my sister was the only ones to make it to college; and for my ancestors who fought for my rights and education. One thing I noticed was how they quoted the “Father of Black History”, Dr. Carter G. Woodson “if a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated” (page33), but failed to mention any special traditions that FAMU does like set Fridays and convocation. As I began to tackle this chapter I thought it was just going to be short stories about each president and person whose donated. You can imagine how surprised I was to see how they included other things going on in the world; while each president was in charge. For example, the killing of Trayvon Martin from racial profiling and Michael Brown by a police officer. Which are two things I was alive to experience and I am continuing to experience in modern day. I have learned that being black is more than a color it is a culture and that I must try and work harder to succeed even if I’m at an
Always being interested in American history, I decided to take the course to complete my general education requirement at the University of Central Florida. The class was very inspiring and I particularly enjoyed writing my essay on Booker T. Washington, an accomplished man who is many times overlooked when discussing history in the late 1800’s. When writing the essay, it was necessary to research Washington’s life to discover the important work he did during his time, and ultimately explain how his accomplishments influenced modern day America.
“Black women lived in greater oppression than White women, thus making it more difficult for black women to secure sponsorship to participate in the education of the freedpeople…the accomplishments and self-determination of Peake and Forten during this time became more significant and compelling.”
To start my family origin paper we have to go way back to 1976 when my parents met in Alamo, North Dakota; a town of about 200 people in the northwestern part of the state. They met while going through school playing sports, mainly basketball. Both were pretty good at the sport and won some awards and had chances to play more but decided to get married and start a family instead. Both grew up around the whole farming scene. My mom actually lived on a farm growing up and also as she started her own family. My dad lived in the small town but his grandpa had a farm not far from where he grew up and also helped a lot of the local

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot explores the historically racist treatment of black patients by doctors. Henrietta was alienated by her doctors and was not educated about her disease and the things they were doing to her body. Elsie, Henrietta’s daughter, was wrongfully experimented on by the doctors that were supposed to be taking care of her in the mental institution. African Americans as a whole race have always been ostracized by their doctors and scientists since their history in America began.
Pride had also entered into her character as she explained her smiling soreness, as she "had taken to smiling more often and [her] jaws hurt from the unaccustomed activity;" (835). "As a member of the winning team (the graduating class of 1940)" (835) she was moving headfirst toward the future. It was obvious that she was delighted that she had accumulated a plethora of achievements displayed with colored stars on the bulletin board. Even though Henry Reed had been awarded valedictorian, "instead of being disappointed [she] was pleased that [they] shared top honors" (836). A sense of approval flowed though her and she was genuinely and deservedly happy; "she was headed for the freedom of open fields" (835).
The topic of the Roman Empire has been visited and revisited many times since its rise and fall over a thousand –year time period. While it was not the first or the longest-running empire to fade into history, people have been fascinated by its story for centuries. There have been movies made, such as “Pompeii” in 2014 (Kenny), and “Cleopatra” in 1963 (Rice), a play,”Julius Caesar” performed in 1600 and written by William Shakespeare (Alchin), and many more. In James W. Ermatinger’s book, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he described the last 250 years of the Empire, in which he provided historical insight, possible reasons for the demise, and lessons to be learned for the future (Ermatinger).
Was it an ominous secret that needed to be uncovered, a truth that needed vindication, or simply a fabricated tale initiated by an uncle whose reality had been dimmed by passage of time? For years, the now deceased uncle had insisted the family surname was not correct and was equally as persistent that the family name should be another. It didn't help that when immediate family members were asked, they either didn't want to discuss it, or pleaded having no knowledge about the subject. After so many years, could the real truth be uncovered?
Firs is an eighty seven year old servant at Madame Ranevsky’s estate. Although he is old, but he is the only character in the play that shows the positive and happy life in the past in the cherry orchard estate. In act I Firs comments that now that he has finally seen his boss again he is ready to rest in peace (p. 6), this being a foreshadow that at the end of the play he will actually die. In act II, Firs comments on life was better before the serfs were freed, and that even after he, being a slave, was freed, he stayed and worked on the estate for Madame Ranevsky (p. 22-23). This comment by Firs is a representation of how the older generation views the emancipation manifesto and doesn’t adapt and accept the change, wishing that things stayed the same. Firs said, “And when the Liberation came I
