OJ Simpson OJ Simpson, one of football’s most legendary players, was admired and extolled by many sports-lovers from across the nation. From being selected as the number one player in the 1969 draft to being named NFL’s Player of the Year three times, he led a life of success and fame (CNN.com). Yet behind this renowned MVP, there stood a dark side. In June of 1994, Simpson was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, Nicole Simpson, and family friend, Ronald Goldman. Simpson pleaded not guilty and eventually won his trial, but his reputation and status were far from recovery. That same year he was nominated for the Heisman trophy, a distinguishing award for football players who’ve shown outstanding skill. Although he did not win that year, in 1968, after rushing 1,709 yards and making 22 touchdowns, he earned the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Award, setting the record for the Heisman's largest margin of victory, “defeating the runner-up by 1,750 points” (Spokeo.com). The rest of Simpson’s career was just as spectacular. Before retiring, Simpson played for both the Bills and the 49ers. He was named NFL Player of the Year in 1973, and played in six Pro Bowls. Simpson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985 (Wikipedia.com). Quite an impressive record he has set.
But his formidable talent and outstanding accomplishments did not necessarily translate into a great relationship with his family. Simpson’s personal relationships were rocky and unstable. He divorced his first wife, Marguerite Whitley, the same year his third child drowned in the pool. He then married Nicole Simpson, whom he also later divorced on grounds of domestic violence and assault (J Matt).
