While I was on my clinical rotation at Wal-Mart, I counseled a patient on her Warfarin prescription. During this rotation, I was doing most of the counsels under the direct supervision of the pharmacist. This particular experience, however, stood out from the rest of the consultations because she seemed very angry when picking up the medicine. I approached her and was prepared to deal with an angry patron. I started counseling her regarding her medication and she stated, “don’t worry, it doesn’t work anyway. My INR keeps going down even though they are upping the dose, and nobody cares about it.” This really raised a red flag with me because of the class of medication this is. The doctor barely wanted to see her anymore because of this and she was getting samples of Eliquis for awhile. Eliquis was working, however, the doctor that was giving her the samples left the practice. The new doctor wouldn’t give her the samples and didn’t seem to care that the Warfarin wasn’t working. I asked her if she tried signing up for ObamaCare so that she could get health coverage again. She stated that she didn’t, but would look into the steps of applying. I explained the process of how to apply and told her that she should never feel alone when making decisions about her healthcare. She came back to the pharmacy 2 weeks later to show me the acceptance letter that Medicaid sent her in the mail. She felt the need to actually come in person to show me, thank me, and even hug me because she stated that her life will be better
