Everyday, people are forced to face with vicious circle of decisions: whether to stick to their morals or obey the authority figure. But it’s a fact that people have a propensity to obey authority, more than to preserve their own morals. A Few Good Men is a film that illustrates the struggle every marine faces-- to follow orders, good or bad. But why would marines follow the orders without hesitation if that order questions the principles they live by? Because the orders in the navy are meant to follow all for the reason of making everyone in Navy into good marines and to be strong enough to defend the nation. It required unquestioning commitment and obedience to orders. The articles, “The Perils of Obedience” by Stanley Milgram and “The
The motion picture A Few Good Men challenges the question of why Marines obey their superiors’ orders without hesitation. The film illustrates a story about two Marines, Lance Corporal Harold W. Dawson and Private First Class Louden Downey charged for the murder of Private First Class William T. Santiago. Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, who is known to be lackadaisical and originally considers offering a plea bargain in order to curtail Dawson’s and Downey’s sentence, finds himself fighting for the freedom of the Marines; their argument: they simply followed the orders given for a “Code Red”. The question of why people follow any order given has attracted much speculation from the world of psychology. Stanley Milgram, a Yale psychologist,
“You don't need a patch on your arm to have honor.” Lt. Daniel Kaffee, portrayed by Tom Cruise, says at the end of the movie to Lance Cpl. Dawson after the final ruling is read, stating PFC. Downy and Lance Cpl. Dawson are innocent but are dishonorably discharged from the military. A Few Good Men portrays the negative impact on military personally from strict obedience. Lt. Daniel Kaffee, along with Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway and Lt. Sam Weinberg; played by Demi Moore and Kevin Pollack, must defend PFC. Downy and Lance Cpl. Dawson from being charge of committing a Code Red. However, Lt. Kaffee believes that PFC. Downy and Lance Cpl. Dawson committed the ‘Code Red’, but because it was a direct order
“We have everything we need to be happy, but we aren't happy. Something’s missing,” writes Ray Bradbury in his novel Fahrenheit 451 (82). Fahrenheit 451 is a book set in a dystopian society where people are restricted to thinking only a certain way. There aren't any two-sided political debates or controversies among media. This is because all media considered tendentious has been banned, and in order to maintain this rule, firemen have been given the duty of burning books. Among the firemen is Guy Montag, a man who would be considered as a society norm with a house and a wife. In the beginning of the book, Montag has no worries and he accepts his life as a nondescript fireman in this unmindful world. However, after encountering his “seventeen
In my short time on this planet, I have learned a lot about good and evil. No, this isn’t knowledge I’ve gained from reading comic books; it’s something I’ve learned about through personal experiences and happenings in my lifetime. In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, good and evil are a large part of the book. The novel has many occurrences where it shows that there is conflict in life, and others that show there is still good in the world. The good may be hard to point out at times, between all the mopey and depressing things in the story, but if you read between the lines, you’ll find them soon enough. You may just be surprised at how much there is. Although there is a lot of bad in the story (the big thing in this novel is sadness really)
Flannery O’Connor shows her readers a realistic look at their own mortality in “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” The story is about a family of five, a father, mother, grandmother, and two children, starting out on a vacation to Florida from Georgia. The family, on their way to a routine vacation, takes a detour that will change their lives forever. Through the use of literary elements like symbolism and characterization, O’Connor creates a theme of good vs. evil, which can be felt throughout the story by tapping into the audience’s emotions.
“When you’re in a gang, you stick up for the members. If you don’t stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers, it isn’t a gang anymore” (Page 26). Ponyboy states this in the novel called The Outsiders. Loyalty is important because it builds strong relationships. Trust and loyalty are important qualities in a friendship. Ways to show loyalty are are by standing up for your friends, by sticking together, and by helping each other.
According to Christian theology, God uses redemption to forgive and bestow mercy even upon the least likely recipients. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, redemption and salvation are important themes that define each character and their moral code. Although The Misfit is a murderer, he is still seen as a character worthy of salvation, in comparison to the Grandmother, because of his honest intentions.
Valerie Bertinelli once said, “Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy. There's going to be stress in life, but it's your choice whether you let it affect you or not.” Every day we make choices. Some choices are go and some are bad. When someone makes a choice, there can be three outcomes: good, bad, and neutral. Making choices can be a split second and is a gut feeling, or it can be a choice which takes days, weeks, months, or even years to make. When we make a decision we know that it will impact someone or something in life. Humans have the power to do something good; something that will help others, even if it hurts ourselves.Humans have the power to do something evil; something that will hurt others when it helps us. When we make choices we
The ethical dilemmas and issues taken from the case are first, the lack of integrity. Curtis is helping Jackie to launch her singing career and helping her to find a nice house as well as assisting her in moving exemplifies self-interest (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2013). Curtis also pursued a romantic relationship with Jackie that can also be viewed as having self-interest. There is also evidence presented of abusive and intimidating behavior. Curtis has created a hostile work environment by harassing Jackie with phone calls and in-person advances, thus, causing Jackie to be unable to perform. Leslie also exemplifies unethical behavior by lying to Jackie regarding her request for help in Curtis’s actions. Curtis used bribery

Life itself is dependent on multiple variables. This list of variables changes life, allows it to go smoothly or it allows it to move roughly. One of these variables is loyalty. The loyalty someone may have to one or, the disloyalty one may show to another is one way life is affected. This loyalty allows one to build friendships or make rivals. In a way this can also be seen in literature, in most cases protagonists would certainly have a harder time if they didn’t have loyal companions, or if the antagonist did. This loyalty affects the actions of some characters, whether it be a disloyal plot twist or the loyalty of the good guys to stand against the enemy. But, like anything this loyalty comes with ups and downs. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the disloyalty between Curley and his wife and
Betrayal is something everyone has experienced. “The saddest thing about betrayal is that is never comes from your enemies. It comes from friends and loved ones.” It’s amazing how one little quote can have so much meaning. In the story Baba betrayed Ali by sleeping with his Sanaubar then making a child and Baba betrayed Hassan because he never told him he was his father . Baba never redeemed himself for doing those unforgivable actions, but the idea of betrayal is a recurring theme in the story and the movie.
We have all had experiences where getting back up is difficult. In cases such as these, we need a helping hand. Being able to help others through love is an important message. God sends people to show us love and those for which we show love in return. In Luke chapter 6, Jesus talks with those gathered about God’s love for everyone. It is written in verse 45 that “a good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart”
The room was vast and gloomy. Its walls were tainted with the memories and innocence of the many souls who perished in the room. Their screams and wails of them being tortured was a never-ending echo in the silent room. Nothing could survive the bitter conditions imposed in this camp. Dieter, a young German soldier laid breathless in the cold, brittle floor. The camp's destructive power was already evident in the new prisoner. His skeletal body was covered with blood shot bruises and deep cuts. And his hair was no longer a luscious baby blond colour but a scrawny dirty blond colour. The only feature that was left untouched was his beautiful youthful blue eyes. Eyes of innocence and youth- but also eyes that kindle power and strength. His eyes were very important, as it was a gateway to the world. The world that was in war- a war that was full of death, destruction and misery. But for now he didn't needed to worry about all of that- he needed plenty of rest if he wanted to survive tomorrow's day.
