In the United States of America, obesity, especially in children, has been on a steady rise since the 1970s. Many health organizations and public figures have tried to combat this rise through passing new policies and speaking out against the epidemic. These efforts have resulted in little progress as health officials have declared that obesity has stayed consistent in the nation over the years (Tavernise). It is critical that the issue of obesity is combated against successfully as obesity can have many long-term health risks to an individual such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. As a result of these drawbacks, it is especially important to further address the issue as obesity can be particularly harmful to children as they…show more content… 839). Permissive and neglectful parenting styles are most often linked to childhood obesity as both involve a lack of authority or restrictions (Moore et al. 840). These lack of restrictions allow children to generally eat unhealthier foods which contribute greatly to obesity. It is also important for parents to encourage their children to partake in physical activities so they can stay active and healthy. Physical activities are crucial to the health of a child and are effective in preventing and eliminating obesity. However, the majority of children in the United States do not meet the “federal guideline of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day” (Moore et al. 828). In the nation, the balance between the consumption of food and physical activity in children is lopsided toward the former with only 42% of children between the ages of six to eleven actually achieving the recommended hour of daily physical activity (Moore et al. 828). This statistic drops noticeably from 42% to 8% for teenagers, between the ages of 12 to 19 (Moore et al. 828). These staggering statistics help to express how big of an issue a lack of exercise can be in relation to a child’s weight. It is important for parents to influence their children to participate in physical activities, although a parent’s own weight status may act as an influence in this situation. A parent’s weight status affects their child’s weight status in that children generally follow in their
Obesity as a Social Issue
Individual problems such as addictions, illnesses and mental depression stalk us throughout our lives, but there is more to addictions, illnesses and mental depression than meets the eye. A good example of this theory is obesity. Obesity in Australia is turning into a problem and as the rates of obesity increase each year, the larger the problem expands. According to sociologist, C. Mills, problems can be divided into either troubles or issues and more often than not, a
possible health issues and a population to focus on for my project, I was overwhelmed by the number of issues we are faced with everyday. I narrowed the search down to obesity and the population I would like to focus on is the adolescents. Health People 2010 identified overweight and obesity as one of the top ten leading health indicators that needs serious attention. Obesity has reached epidemic levels globally; being a significant threat to our own nation’s health. Adolescent obesity rates have more
Introduction:
Childhood obesity is a serious health and social issue in the state of Alabama. Because this health issue is rising at life-threatening rates, one may even call it an epidemic. Childhood obesity increases mortality, causes asthma and type II diabetes. With these effects, at hand the childhood obesity epidemic should not be taken without concern. Children cannot reach their full potential, if they are in the grasp of such a deadly disease.
While the cause of this wide spread epidemic is
With the ability of the media to reach out to a large audience, most individuals will get their information about certain health issues from mainstream media outlets. Health professionals take different approaches to understand a health-related problem that can affect the potential interventions and policies implemented. The approach taken by the media when presenting information on health can have a major impact on how the public understands health. It is, therefore, important to examine how the
The prevalence of obesity in England rose from 14.9% to 25.6% between 1993 and 2014 and the trend is still increasing (Public Health England, 2016a). Furthermore, World Health Organization [WHO] (2016a) recognise obesity as a public health issue. Public health is about helping the population to stay healthy and protecting them from health threats (Department of Health [DH], 2016a). It is about preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through society (Detels, Gulliford, Abdool Karim
Public school foods have the most impact on childhood obesity, and the board has decided to set a plan to terminate this issue. If this issue continues in the life of an adolescent, it can bring a great deal of diseases in the future. everyone on every social and economic tier. Obesity has been viewed as a social epidemic and is even noted to have a serious rate of infection through the connection of social networks. The Fat Acceptance Movement, or FAM, has been the main sponsor of this epidemic by claiming it’s acceptable to be obese despite the evidence that’s stacked against their claims. Obesity acceptance needs to be stopped as it is a slow suicide for the obese, and hurts the nation as a whole overall through social distraught

The Effects of Childhood Obesity: An Epidemic in Our Nation
Childhood obesity is a greatest public health concern in our nation because it has an immediate and long-term effect on morbidity and mortality later in life. Experts in this epidemic suggest that there is

North America (Obesity):
Obesity has been an issue that Americans have been fighting for a long time, yet it is not a problem that we have been able to completely get rid of. I will touch base on how obesity is affecting children, how medical costs have increased because of obesity, what factors have contributed to America’s obesity, and how it relates to health and
