The Problem Obesity is defined as excess body weight that has a negative impact on self-esteem and also contributes to a spectrum of comorbidities, which include type II diabetes, hypertension, multiple cancers and cardiovascular diseases. The result of obesity is a diminished life expectancy and quality of life. Unfortunately, obesity costs have hurt our economy because the U.S. government spends billions of dollars in health care expenses annually, and the trouble does not stop there. In 2012, the CDC reported that more than one third of children in the United States were overweight or obese. With the costs of health care tanking the economy, this country cannot afford to have a population of children overweight or obese. Child who are obese grow to be obese adults and the health complications begin to increase at a much younger age. Therefore, the CDC has proposed a great change in obesity among children to be accomplished by the year 2020.
Programs and Policies
In a strive for better health among our children, the CDC has published guidelines for school programs which promote physical activity and healthy eating.The guidelines that were published, are for healthy eating programs which include recommendations on school policies, instructions to students, curriculums, integration of school food services and nutrition education. The guidelines also target improvements in staff training, family and community involvement, as well as program evaluation.
