More studies are showing that today’s American population is more over weight than ever before, and as a result we have higher amounts of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Many are seeking quick, and easy fixes and are turning to the trendy low carb diets, such as the Akins Diet, to help reduce these health related risks and issues. However, as a result low carb diets have proven to have unwanted side effects, physical health problems, and lack of long term sustainability.
The number one reason many people jump on the trendy low carbohydrate (carbs) diet is to lose weight. According to the Mayo Clinic, “the Atkins Diet has been around since 1972, when cardiologist Robert C. Atkins created it. Dr. Atkins said that dietary fat isn’t what makes people overweight, suggesting instead that carbohydrates are to blame.” Atkins found that by drastically reducing carbs or eliminating them all together sheds weight quicker than any other diet out there. The reason is because when a person reduces the carbs or eliminates them they tend to eat more foods higher in protein and fat which curb the appetite, and leaves the individual feeling full, and suppresses the appetite. The Atkins diet follows 4 phases which starts by limiting carbs to 20 grams per day. By Phase 4 the individual has reached lifetime maintenance stage and can have 45-100 grams of carbs per day.
