Obesity. A world wide problem that we as people are trying to find a solution too. Our government is wanting to take over our food choices. Meaning to control how much soda we can drink or how much salt can be in our soup. Now you're probably thinking “We don’t want that because every person is different, there might be someone who has to eat a lot more food, because he and/or she is too skinny. I’m not saying we shouldn’t stop obesity it's just that it's your choice how you wanna live your life.” Well what I wanna say is, well yes I agree with you, it is your choice how you wanna live your life, But do you want to live your life with obesity and an unhealthy body? Yeah I think not. The government tried to put the amount of calories in the …show more content…
Shown in the article “Debate Spark Food for Thought on the Role of the Government in Curbing Obesity” by Charles Reyman, says that “Obesity costs upwards of $150 billion a year. More than half of that is paid by government through Medicaid, Medicare and (federal) employee health insurance claims.” the same article by Charles Reyman says that “Our food environment has changed dramatically over the last thirty years in a way that makes healthy eating seem like swimming upstream… We are not saying that personal responsibility is not the most important thing, but there is more to it than that. Obesity is a societal problem, and we all have a role to play in addressing: parents, individuals, health professionals, organizations, food companies, manufactures of sporting goods, and, of course, government.” In the other article called “Keep the State off my Plate” by Julie Gunlock, says that children in San Francisco must cross the Bay Bridge in Oakland if they want a free toy with their chicken nuggets. I think that is a great idea because then the children will have to work for what they want and still stay
The Federal government for years has told people what they should and should not put in their bodies. Whether it’s Tran’s fat or cigarettes, sugar or alcohol, saturated or salt, legislators and regulators pick things off our table because they think they know better. For example, considering the widespread of obesity in America, it is substantiated by statistics that “the cost of obesity is currently estimated at $190 billion per year” and the bad thing about it’s coming from taxpayers. (Experts, The) I have several issues with this statement: first, the simple fact that the government is spending money on a disease that humans caused on themselves. According to the article” What Causes Obesity?” it is stated that “The risk factors that contribute to obesity can be a complex combination of genetics, socioeconomic factors, metabolic factors and lifestyle choices”. Sadly, citizens have not much choice but to pay higher taxes. And finally, the simple fact that the government is spending money on ineffective solutions. According to the article, ‘Government Intervention Will Not Solve Our Obesity Problem’, it is stated that “despite the myriad of studies showing American obesity is increasing, research does not clearly support that government can solve this complex problem’ (Marlow) For example, the government solution of adding calories counts on the menu. A recent study has shown that “27.7 percent who saw the calorie labeling” had
Why does America have an obesity problem? Do we blame it on ourselves, the government, or the supermarket? It is obviously and individual’s responsibility to keep one’s self healthy, but are there ways the government can strive for an overall healthier diet for Americans? Can we change the manipulative ways of Super Markets and persuade them to look past profit? The American government should put in effort to provide a better dietary path for American citizens by working on motivating individuals to make better choices in their diet, pushing Super markets and industries to work together to lower prices of healthier foods, and placing policies and banning unhealthy ingredients in junk foods. It may not be the governments fault, but obesity is such a big issue in American culture that we need to make some major changes and the government is the only one who can make that happen.
In the United States the society needs to work on controlling this problem known as obesity. It is a problem that if does not get controlled sooner than later, will spiral out of hand even more. Before this spirals out of control society needs to take action to reducing the cost of healthy food amongst middle-low class citizens so they can eat the
The United States of America is nation that is known for its romance with guns and food. Not the most glamorous idea to be known for but in a way the comical characteristics fit the ever growing nation. Yet this obsession with the greasy, cheesy, and always supersized holds a much grimmer reality. Obesity in America is through the roof with 36 percent of American adults being classified as obese. This alongside the rapid growth of childhood obesity has created a love for shows about weight loss and health like those of “The Biggest Loser”. These inspirational shows help to show that “it” can be done, the seemingly impossibility of losing the hundreds of pounds that need to go. Though the shows are inspirational and entertaining, they are dangerous for all of the people who have lost all this weight disillusioned that they can keep it of, furthermore the
As years go by American weight struggle has been getting worse. People with diabetes today has more than double since 1994. While there are ways to help bring down obesity, most companies have not taken action. There are many factors to why obesity has only been increasing all these years.
In recent discussion of obesity, a controversial issue has been whether there should be involvement of society and the government. On one hand, some argue that obese people harm everyone, therefore, everyone should be involved. One the other hand, people argue that obese people should decide whether or not they want to be healthy. In sum, then, the issue is whether society and the government should do something about obesity. My own view is that while I do think that the government and society should encourage healthy living, however, there should be less pressure from society.
One may agree with the government regulating our food. People all around the world are obese and struggling to get healthy again. The percentage of obese people is rising and it is getting to a concerning level. When you are obese, you become limited in movement and jobs that you can get. The world still needs workers for the land and obese people cannot do that job because they cannot move as well. Obese people are restricted in the job category and many other categories. If the government does not pitch in to stop obesity, more people will not be successful, there would still be more ways to become obese, and people would just eat and not think of the calories that go into their daily meals.
Obesity in the United States has really become an economic problem as well. People are spending the little money that they have and spending it on food that they shouldn’t be eating in the first place, which they should be spending their money on healthier and nutritious food, for themselves and their family. New England Medical Center, Michael Dansinger of the Tufts says:
Obesity is on the rise in American adults and children. Over 78.6 million Americans are considered obese (CDC, 2014). Health experts believe the obesity crisis has become an epidemic that needs to be controlled. Today many efforts are being made by Federal and state governments and some major companies to combat obesity in adults and children. For example, some major companies are rewarding employees with cash incentives for exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight. The federal government has even considered imposing a “fat tax” on unhealthy food and beverages to help in the fight against obesity. In this paper I will discuss if the argument that obesity is an epidemic is sound, if a person’s weight should be a topic of public discussion, and my own personal view of how obesity should be addressed.
Many children of today are faced with the undeniable issue of obesity and other severe health conditions rooted from unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise. When analyzing children from the mid 1970’s to now a significant increase in child obesity can be detected. This statement conjures the question who is responsible for what children are consuming and the opportunities that are made available for them. Instinctively humans are given free will to make choices for themselves; however, at a young age parents are the one’s who are making the decisions. Many adults are appealed by cheap, fast, and accessible which perfectly describes junk food. Given the choice of a healthy dinner or a pizza, when comparing prices, majority of people would choose the latter of the two. In terms of aiding this obesity epidemic the government also needs to step up in supporting the community both financially and socially. The government has access to a wide range of resources that can contribute to inflating the
Its five o’clock in the morning and your alarm clock starts beeping. You have two options, get out of bed and lace up your shoes or change the alarm to a later time. If you decided to get dressed and lace on your favorite tennis shoes you are a part of an elite group. This elite group decides to get up each morning and go outside for a run. It does not matter what your race, gender, political views, or even what music you prefer to listen to, you may not even know the runner that passes you in the opposite direction. There is one type of person that you might not see very many people belonging to, and this is the obese population.
Obesity has become a serious problem with more than one third of adults being obese in the United States. Obesity is seen as a self-destructive behavior accompanied with smoking and use of other drugs thus, government officials and other business bureaucrats expressed the need to impose higher health insurance premiums on the obese. Obesity is not always due to the personal behavior of people and can be linked with the environment and genetics; I personally feel that obese people should not pay a higher health insurance premium compared to those that aren’t. Government officials and other business bureaucrats
Having a body mass index above 30 is considered obese (Williams). According to Sarah Muntel, a registered dietitian, “33.8% of the United States population is affected by obesity and 19% of children and adolescents are also affected.” Depending on who you ask, there are a variety of reasons why obesity is such a big problem today. It is a simple fact that we now exercise less and eat more processed foods than we did 30 years ago (Williams). It is obvious that obesity is a growing problem in today’s society. Many try to blame the fast food industry, when in reality there are many other factors that cause obesity.
More than 160,000 deaths are associated with obesity each year. People from other countries imagine a country overrun by obese and overweight people when they think of America. The thing is, those make up only .05% of America’s population. Therefore, the government should not be regulating what we eat, like unhealthy food and junk food.
Obesity is a very serious subject that a lot of people take lightly, especially us as Americans. America is the most obese country in the world. Statistics show that 300,000 people die a day in the United States of America due to obesity. This clearly shows that we have a serious problem that is massively underestimated. Obesity is also something that countries all across the world suffer from. For example, Australia is also one of the most obese countries in the world, and 50,000 people die a year from obesity in Australia. That’s 140 people who die per day in Australia. To solve the problem of obesity the prices of junk food should be raised and the prices of healthy food should be lowered and more convenient.
