Healthy People 2010 and now Health People 2020 is a governmental sponsored program in which there are science-based objectives for the health of all Americans. The program was established to: 1) encourage collaboration across regions and communities; 2) empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and to take some responsibility for their healthcare, and 3) to measure the impact of health prevention activities across the nation. The power of the initiative is that it encourages prevention and communication across states, regions, ethnicities, and communities (About Health People, 2012). Upson County, Georgia, is the focus of our analysis based on the Healthy People initiative. It is part of the greater Atlanta Metropolitan Area, and was created in 1824. According to the 2010 Census, the population in 2010 was 27, 153 with over 50% adults between 18 and 64 years of age. The county is primarily White (70%) and African American as the dominant minority (28%). Sixty-nine percent of the population are home owners, with the median home value $92,500, about half that as the median value for the State of Georgia. The median household income is $34,068, down from the State's $29,736, and 20.1% of the population are living below the poverty line. The county is home to Southern Crescent Technical College and several tourist sites from the Old South. Thomaston Mills was the major employer in the county until 2001, when the company moved its operations to Mexico,
Since 1980, the United States has taken on 10-year plans that outline certain key national health objectives set to be accomplished during a 10-year timeframe (Shi & Singh, 2015). These initiatives are founded on medical care with prevention services, health promotion, education, community health care, and increased access to integrated services. The initiative, Healthy People 2010: Healthy People in Healthy Communities, launched in 2000. The initiative emphasizes the role of community partners such as
For individuals to be healthy requires the combination of varying levels of physical, mental and social well-being throughout a person's lifetime. Most people find that maintaining their health requires a certain amount of effort and intention. Health programs can help with this effort, but their effectiveness depends on how well health professionals make sure that an individual's attention and information convert to actions and behaviors that succeed (Issel, 2009).
The health status of the population in the United States is a national priority. The Healthy People 2020 outlines priorities and to improve the health of individuals and communities across the country. Healthy People 2020 is defined as a comprehensive set of national objectives for “improving the health of all Americans” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para. 1). The Healthy people 2020, is aimed at improving the health of individuals and communities and envisions “a society in which all people live long, healthy lives” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para 4). A short priority list was developed and contains twenty-six objectives knowns as Leading Health Indicators (LHI). The list of objectives was created to prioritize health issues that must be addressed and to find appropriate actions to take in order to improve the health of the population.
1. Healthy People 2020: Have a vision of a society that all people live long, healthy lives by using a 10 year plan. Through their mission they identify
The Objective for Healthy People 2020 is to significantly reduce the chances of the high risk population and the population who has the disease. The goal is try to implement a change in their lifestyle choices. Health People 2020 reports that “44.6 percent of adults aged 18 years and over who were at high risk for diabetes with prediabetes reported increasing their levels of physical activity in 2005-08.” The 2020 baseline objective in 2005-08 was at 44.6 percent and
I enjoyed reading your DQ1 post this week, and there are a lot of contributing factors that led to disparities within the health care system. There are a lot of federal initiative to help aid in decreasing disparities within the health care system like the National HIV/AIDS strategy. The Healthy People 2020 initiative has been a useful tool to track disparities within the United States (U.S.) healthcare system. They analyze and track a wide variety of factors that can lead to disparities like geographic location, ethnicity, and sexual orientation (chap. 11). To end disparities, there has to be an effective way to monitor progression and educate every individual in the health care system about disparities. But like
Summit County has several factors leading to poor access to comprehensive, quality health care. The poverty rate is 16%, the unemployment rate is 7.2%, and the uninsured rate is 14.1% (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). There is also a high obesity rate of 28.4% . (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). According to Milio's framework for prevention (2014) the people that make up these statistics show that lower income, uninsured individuals have a poor health status compared to employed, insured individuals. Therefore, they are at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. It is also interesting to mention that in Nancy Milio's research she found that most people, whether low, middle, or upper class, will choose the easiest option available the majority of the time (Nies & McEwen, 2015). People making unhealthy choices such as smoking, abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, eating poorly, and remaining physically inactive, pose the greatest risk to heart disease. These lifestyle choices lead to obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol which are the main causes of cardiovascular
Yes, I agree with you that people are living much longer thanks to advances in technology and medicine. Thus, the older adults (I prefer to use the term older than elderly or geriatric), is one group of the population that Healthy People 2020 has assigned a separate topic of concern. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggested that any health promotion for the older adult has to take into consideration the psychosocial determinants of health. Given that older adults may not have the physical strength or stamina of the younger population, participation in physical activities should be encouraged (Healthy People 2020). If you don’t mind I would like to suggest that you include some kind of activity in your program
Health promotion is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the process which helps people take control over the determining factors of their health which in turn will help to improve their health. With multiple determining factors of health, health promotion means working between the community and health care professionals to effectively educating the Hispanics (Journal of Cultural Diversity, 2012). “Health promotion is carried out by and with people, not on or to people” (Journal of Cultural Diversity, 2012). We as educators must have respect and not discriminate against the Hispanic population but work with them to teach them how to live healthier lives. Healthy People 2020 states that it is their dream to have a culture where all people live long, healthy lives. Health promotion means addressing the health disparities of the Hispanics so they can experience positive health
Background Upson County, Georgia, is the focus of our Healthy People Analysis. It is primarily White and African Amerian with high-home ownership but low valued homes, lower income than most of the state, and over 20% of the population living below the poverty line. Most of the current economic activity comes from tourism, since the manufacturing base left the area over the last two decades. The county shares some of the major health concerns of poorer communities across the nation: high obesity and resultant disease, higher than average type-II diabetes, especially in children; high smoking and substance abuse rates; and a low level of adequate services and transportation to those services to help the problem (Upson County, Georgia, 2012)
In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be
Health people 2020 is focused on promoting health, protecting health, and providing preventative services. The plan is to decrease health disparities by improving the health of certain groups in need of better health care. The Health People 2020 initiative wants to prevent chronic disease such as cancer, diabetes mellitus, and heart disease.
We all know someone who has suffered from heart disease. Whether it was from a heart attack, congestive heart failure, or stroke, some type of cardiovascular disease has taken the life of someone we loved way too soon. This epidemic of heart disease must be stopped through the collaboration of physicians, nurses, law makers, and concerned citizens. The purpose of this paper is to examine cardiovascular disease, the risks associated with heart disease and obesity per Milo’s framework, comparison of obesity and Healthy People 2020 national goals, and finally the long-term and short-term goals and interventions selected for this paper.
In 1987, the Healthy People 2000 report was created. This report implemented a new national prevention strategy with three goals that will, increase life expectancy, reduce health disparities, and increase access to preventive services. The 2000 report also gave health promotion, health prevention, and preventative services that would identify and surveillance activities were identified.
To conclude, health promotion is important factor to decrease and health disparities. If the resource is available and provided, and advocates like organizations like Health People 2020 can make a difference in a community to take their own health into their own hands if given the right education and tools. People have to be empowered to understand so they can assist in correcting the problems in their communities and individual
