concrete observable behaviors. In study the questionnaire was completed by the same nurse both at pretest and posttest.
The study showed improvement in quality of life of the people living with dementia diseases after the intervention. The design used in the study is appropriate because it helps in minimizing the influence of covariates as the participants serves as their own controls. The study had maintained confidentiality of the participant and ethical consideration. The sample size of the study is very small so generalization cannot be done. The data were based on observation so it may be biased. Likewise, the study is very expensive as it need train professionals and dogs.
The study suggests the use of animals for patients with dementia

The GO game is a kind of Chinese chesses, which involves many aspects of cognition and improves mental health. The study had 147 Alzheimer’s disease patients as their sample. The sample was selected through inclusion criteria. The researcher of the study had taken informed consent from the participant or from their guardian. The participants were randomly assigned into 3 groups; control group, short-time GO game intervention (SGGI, 1 hour daily) and long-time GO game intervention (LGGI, 2 hours daily). The participants were followed for 6 months. The study used Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) to examine depressive severity. In addition to this the study also used Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment of Depression (KICA-Dep) for evaluation of depression. Some Alzheimer’s disease patients were suffering from anxiety disorder and anxiety was measured based on Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The scores of HADS are presented as from 0 to 21, and higher scores stand for more severe anxiety. General functioning was evaluated by a Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale. Life quality was assessed using RAND-36, which counts for wellbeing and functioning in eight dimensions. Alexithymia is a psychological problem and was evaluated using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale–20 (TAS-20). The study also measured serum …show more content…
Creative therapy sessions, included dance, drama, music and movement activities, which were implemented over an eight-week period, a minimum of three times a week. Observational outcomes of creative self-expression, communication, pleasure and enjoyment, and general engagement were recorded. As a sample of the study, all patients attending one of the two community units - unit A or unit B, both of which provide day treatment and inpatient care - were invited to take part in dance, drama, music and movement activities. Consent for involvement in the project and the use of photographs was obtained from patients or their family members. The data collection tool was developed by the project lead and the clinical governance support team, and was not piloted. To maintain anonymity all participants using the tool was assigned an identification number that remained with them throughout the eight-week evaluation period. The data collection tool was designed to record information on attendance, activities including warm-up and session closing strategies and outcomes of the creative therapy sessions in relation to creative self-expression, communication, pleasure and enjoyment, and general engagement. The member of staff running the activity recorded the degree of improvement seen in the participant during each session. No improvement was
The number of people living with dementia worldwide was estimated to be 47.47 million in 2015, reaching 75.63 million in 2030 and 135.46 million in 2050 (WHO, 2015). As the disease progresses the person with dementia experiences loss in memory, certain personality traits, expressive abilities and other skills. Cognitive impairment eventually compromises the ability of person with dementia to carry out activities of daily living and other tasks in daily life. This decline in functional ability posits a huge challenge for maintaining health, wellbeing and quality of life of people with dementia. Therefore, issues related to wellbeing of people with dementia should be carefully examined and
The quasi-experimental study will be longitudinal and evaluative in nature, evaluating the effectiveness of AAI in persons with dementia over a span of three years. The researcher will seek to follow two hundred dementia patients over 65 over the course of three years, evaluating the impact of Animal-Assisted Intervention, in the form of fish aquariums, on their quality of life and mental state. Participants will be selected that are over 65 and have had a diagnosis of dementia for at least a year. Cluster sampling will be used to select patients from 10 Dallas Fort Worth area nursing homes or memory care facilities. Nursing homes and memory care facilities used in the study will be selected to represent a variety of socio-economic and
A recent study of music therapy interventions was conducted on 1,891 participants. The study was offered by music therapists and medical staff.

This assignment is going to outline possible effects of dementia on an individual’s health and quality of life. There are many different factors that having dementia will effect. As stated above some will affect the health of the person and others will affect the quality of life that the person will have.
Dementia refers to a syndrome which results in deterioration in thinking, memory, behavior, and ability to execute everyday activities and duties. Despite the fact that the syndrome is mainly associated with the older people, it is not a normal aspect or part of ageing. One of the major causes of dementia is the aspect of Alzheimer's disease. This disease contributes to about 60 to 70 percent of the cases of dementia. Dementia possesses psychological, physical, economic, and social impacts in relation to the family, caregivers, and the entire society. Dementia affects each individual in a diverse or different way with reference to the impact of the disease and personality following the development of the syndrome (Gao et al, 2013 p. 447).
The research aims at determining the affect of dementia on the lives of individuals and how it impacts on their social interactions. The research will also identify the ways in which aging individuals can refrain themselves from falling prey to this disease. It will highlight some important information for caregivers who will better understand this disease and will know how to deal with people who have this disease. As we all
Music and drama: Arts Therapists, who specialise in art, drama or music, use their chosen art form as a therapeutic intervention to help people with physical, mental, social and emotional difficulties. Arts Therapists work as autonomous professionals with a case load of clients in a variety of settings
When children are presented with Art Therapy, it may be geared towards creative style and imagination.
Music therapy comes in all sorts of different shapes and forms, with the therapist choosing which process should be used with the patient in order to maximise the session’s potential. These can range from the patient playing a previously learned piece on an instrument (if they already have a musical background), to
In this assignment, I researched about the health problem, dementia. Dementia is one of the serious health problems Australia encounters. This is due to the fact that the aging of population in Australia is increasing. Thus, the number of people who are diagnosed as dementia is increasing every year. Brown & Edwards (2005) suggested that there are approximately 18,000 new cases of dementia in Australia every year. Harris, Nagy and Vardaxis (2006) stated ¡®dementia is a progressive organic mental disorder characterised by chronic personality disintegration, confusion, disorientation, stupor, deterioration of intellectual capacity and function, and impairment of control of memory£¬ judgement and impulses.¡¯ (p.501) Brown& Edwards (2005)
It has been reported that by the year 2030, the number of dementia patients will increase to 75.6 million cases worldwide (Qiu-Yue Wang, Dong Mei Li, 2016). Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia characterized by major brain tissue degeneration. The widespread network of damage that accumulates with age often manifests as anger, depression, anxiety, and other behavioral and psychological symptoms that are difficult to treat through medication (Qiu-Yue Wang, Dong Mei Li, 2016). Art therapy serves as a channel of communication to patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s who have lost their ability to speak or think clearly. Several benefits have been observed through art therapy interventions in patients with a degenerative brain disease such as Alzheimer’s. A study conducted in 2004 showed that patients with severe dementia could effectively improve their visual-spatial abilities as well as delay the progression of the disease through painting and drawing (Qiu-Yue Wang, Dong Mei Li, 2016). Furthermore, it has been reported that the use of antipsychotics could increase mortality and cerebrovascular events among older patients with dementia (Rue-Chuan Chen et al., 2014). Non-pharmacological treatments should not be underestimated when alleviating the burdens of Alzheimer’s on patients. The brain is a infinite network of circuits and connections that change
Evaluation studies have shown that even though there is certain evidence showing different forms of interventions for dementia, the amount & quality of care provided is poor. For instance, a dementia study had results which revealed that about only 35 percent of suggested care quality indicators being achieved (Reuben et al., 2009). When referring to some factors behind this, it was realized that most physicians are not so much interested in educational and counseling sides of dementia care, as well as not having sound knowledge on other
This assignment critically discusses about dementia, a widespread disability among older adults today. It provides an introduction to dementia and analyses its prevalence in society. The various forms of dementias are elaborated with description about dysfunctions and symptoms. Nursing Assessment and Interventions are provided in the further sections which discusses about actions nurses should take on while evaluating patients and treating them. Finally, communication, an important Activity of Daily Living (ADL) is explored and patient/carer advice is presented so as to maintain good health conditions in the patient.
I used the behavioral activation form to track daily activities and myself for several days. My daily behavior included going to class, eating, playing games on my phone, checking Facebook, sleeping, going to the library, studying and hanging out with friends. Some negative behaviors that were low on importance and enjoyment included eating junk food, buying fast foods, and playing games on my phone. Some positive behaviors included hanging out with family and friends. The life area I selected was mind, body, & spirituality, which is physical, emotional, or spiritual health. The value I selected was healthy and fit, which is very important to me. One positive activity that adheres to the chosen value and is relevant to the chosen life area
