The lesson Ponce de Leon was a fun and interactive activity that I completed with a group of fourth grade students. The lesson included an e-book and a story map organizer to helps students write an open – ended written response question. The name of the book , Finding Florida Exploration and its Legacy, by Wendy Concklin, (2017). In the small instructional group, I had an English language learner Ene and an average-level student Dean who both completed story map organizer and the written response question. Both students did very well on the activity, but Ene need more support with word recognition and spelling. Surprisingly, Ene’s hand writing was neater than Dean’s; however, Dean wrote more fluently and with more detail than Ene. Ene needed more support with vocabulary and benefitted from pictures within the book. Furthermore, Ene needed more time to complete the main idea map and the written response question. I had to move on with the activity and helped Ene finish completing the main idea map as students moved on to complete the written response question. Ene’s written portion of the …show more content…
Each student’s success on the final assessment and written response was due to the graphic organizer and group discussion about the text. The graphic organizer helped facilitate student learning so that the students could meet the scale level 3? I worked with the students while they were completing independent work, and I believe that may have positively influenced their activity outcome. However, it may not show exactly what students can do by themselves. The activity was not created for a summative assessment, but a fun way to learn about Florida history and practice responding to written response

Christopher Columbus and Cabeza de Vaca were both well experienced explorers of the New World. They both traveled to the New World to find out what was out there and if what they would find, could help them and their country. In the narratives, “Letter of Discovery” by Christopher Columbus and Castaways by Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, they exemplified the overall environment of the New World. Each explorer had quite the experience within the New World and interactions with the natives but they were not quite the same. Columbus’ journey consisted of learning about the new land and obtain resources to bring back to his country. Cabeza de Vaca also wanted to find resources and goods but mainly wanted to explore the land and try to understand if it was possible to create a society alongside the natives. As they went into the New World, they had found new discoveries but their purpose of the journey lead them down paths that would give off two different perspectives.

Creating and implementing effective lessons for a literacy learner who is struggling with reading and writing takes much effort and appropriate resources. Throughout the Literacy Development course, I have gained much insight and resources that have become valuable tools in addressing students’ literacy needs. Each week, I conducted lessons and activities that targeted the needs of many students, but my initial focus on was on one particular student. His individual reading level, spelling development, and writing abilities were analyzed and the recorded data was used
