After completing my observations, I noticed that there is a lot to be learned about someone by just examining their personal belongings. By how they treat their personal objects often reflect what their actual life is like. Think about how you treat your personal items. It may be with lots of care or you may use an item for its intended purpose and not care if it breaks during the process. This says a lot about the person. So, by examining someone’s car, which is a highly valuable item to a person, it is as if we get a small glimpse into their life style. Looking at the car I observed, it appears to me that the owner of this car is of high social class. The car itself is a new car and is in pristine condition. This shows that the owner takes …show more content…
To avoid preconceived notions about the owner’s gender, I must observe closely the details of the car. There are a few observations to make to help guide your decision of the owner’s gender. The first observation to make is the cars color. While there are many gender-neutral colors, if the car has a gender dominate color it is easy to assume the gender. Such as the color blue or pink, these are both very gender dominates colors. However, the car I observed was white; this a very neutral color. So, assuming the gender of the owner is a little difficult. There is another way to assume the gender of the owner other than the cars color. This second way to assume the gender of the owner is off of the modifications done to the car. For the most part men frequently modify their car. Such as the wheels, the stance of the car, or the exhaust of the car. By knowing this I am able to make pretty decent assumption of the gender. The modifications done to the car I observed leads me to believe that the owner is a male. A third way to assume the gender of the car owner is by the decals on the car. Often times decals revel a lot about a person and who they are. The decals on the car I observed were minimal. There was a small fish decal on the back of the car. This doesn’t say much about the gender, but rather their spiritual …show more content…
When first looking at a car one would not immediately assume the ethnic background of the owner. There are several clues however that may offer some insight on what the ethnic background is of the owner. One clue could come from the bumper stickers or decorations on the car. For example, sometimes people will put the flag of the country that they are from. This is a clue as to what ethnicity they are. Other times people will put their political views on their car, this gives us an idea of what they support and the type of lifestyle they live. The car I observed happened to have a fish emblem on the back of it. The owner might just like to fish, but I have a better idea of what it may stand for. The fish is often times tied to Christianity, therefor I could make a pretty good assumption that the owner is a Christian, or other close religion. Based off their religion I can begin to speculate what type of person they are. Again, this is nothing more than a speculation as I do not personally know the owner. By looking at clues on the car we are able to make a fairly accurate guess as to what the owners ethnic background
Gender identity has changed its definition over time. The psychological definition as stated from the social learning theory is that gender identity is the sense of being male or female. Seems simple but we now know in todays world the definition has broadened. Gender identity is now defined as one 's personal experience of one 's own gender. Gender identity can correlate with assigned sex at birth, or can differ from it completely. All societies have a set of gender categories that can serve as the basis of the formation of a person 's social identity in relation to other members of society. From the past when we had many strong women’s rights activist who fought so what your gender was did not
The determination of gender identity is much deeper than whether a person is born a male or a female. The exact identifier that separates gender identity is currently unknown but researchers believe that genetics, hormones, reproductive organs, biological, and environmental factors all play a role in distinguishing a person’s gender identity. A person’s physical gender and their sense of gender are formed at two different times in two different parts of the body. A person’s gender is whether they are born male or female, but the way they identify themselves may be the opposite, which is not uncommon and has occurred since the beginning of time. In culture males are known to be the stronger, more aggressive sex, while females are the
Gender is defined as whatever behaviors and attitudes a group considers proper for its males and females. Unlike sex, gender is something that we learn from the day we are born. “Young children begin to acquire gender role stereotypes at about the same time they develop gender identity and by the age of 3 or 4 most children” (Amanda Youmans). Peers, community, media, religion and our upbringing all play a role in the understanding of our culture and what is considered acceptable for males and females. When the sex of a child is revealed, they are automatically placed into a gender specific role with certain expectations. There are things in this world such as colors, toys, media depiction and taught behaviors that play into these gender roles.
The sedan as well as the motorcycle had relatively clean shaven drivers with local license plates with no recent citation on their record as a license plate check came back clear, however there is a car three car lengths behind my unmarked cruiser making it a point to obey every traffic law not trying to attract my attention. There are no plates on the front of the sedan and there is bar code on the front windshield as well as on the front passenger and front driver window indicating the vehicle is a rental vehicle. The driver appears to be scraggly and is smoking. It is a police officer’s discretion to determine which vehicle will be pulled over. I rely heavily on training, past experience, and underlying prejudices and stereotypes that I have compounded through

It is important to realize the basic facts that are associated with cars and with BMW in particular, and that different demographic are attracted towards different types of car, to later understand that even though the product in the ad may be amazing but the ad itself is not. Did you know that in 2010 the number of cars in the world reached a billion (Noël)? Today’s culture is highly surrounded and based on the use of cars. They are such a prominent part of our culture today that if an alien were to visit our planet right now they might just consider cars to be the dominant form of life (The Hitchhiker 's Guide to the Galaxy). There are so many different types, and makes of cars that they can suit any personality in the world.
That the car is “bright with nickel” and contains “hatboxes,” “supper-boxes,” and “tool-boxes” suggests that its owner is familiar with all walks of life.
that the car is a family car and is aimed at married women mainly but
Automobiles symbolize the good and bad, people often look at the make of the car.
A significant point in Bems’ (1993) chapter in Lens of Gender on gender identity was the concept of the self-fulfilling prophecy when it comes to the treatment and development of young boys and girls in society. The first point discussed is how the ‘maternal instinct’ is not so biological as much it is women being confined to the private sphere, in turn having the most interaction with children. This point stood out as I was reading because I have known from a young age I did not want children. Many told me that my opinion would change when I grew older, and when you have your own child being a mother comes naturally. As I reflected I was reminded of the point later made by Bem (1993) that “adults in the child’s community
My most meaningful possession is my pinewood boyscout derby car. It is a bit of a relic in my life and it show due to the thick layer of collected dust and loosened wheels. Starting from the front of the toy car, it has been scratched and dented in multiple places presumably from hitting the “car stop” at the end of the derby track. Wiping away some of the dust reveals a very dark shade of blue, leaning more towards black even. Designs of green and blue colored koi fish stickers appear on the upper hood. The fish even shimmer a small amount when exposed to bright light. Toward the center of the car is a small piece of metal to make sure the car wouldn’t flip on the track. How this metal is placed almost makes it look like some sort of drivers
In December of 2015 in the small city of Lebanon, Ohio, a girl named Leelah committed suicide. She had been posting her story online for a couple of years, writing about her experience in “therapy”, unsupportive parents, and high levels of anxiety and depression stemming from extreme discomfort with her body. Leelah’s suicide went viral. The note she left online was posted repeatedly with expressions of grief from her online followers and anger from complete strangers. The day she died, Leelah’s mother posted on Facebook, “My sweet sixteen year old son, Joshua Ryan Alcorn went to heaven this morning…please continue to keep us in your prayers” (Fantz). Leelah, a transgender girl, is one of many young trans people
Gender identity is the personal conception of being a man or a woman and the society creates standards and comes up with gender roles basing them on existing norms and traditions which will in turn influence gender identity. For instance, most societies associate strength and dominance to be masculine roles while caring and assisting or subordination known to be feminine roles. This clearly makes gender identity be bred within the society. One’s identity is important as it influences his or her life through events like life experiences, how one is being taken or treated, how to do one associate or socialize with others, the type of job one will have to do and also opportunities that may come up favoring a certain type of gender identity. One is also likely to face obstacles or discrimination due to his or her identity.
The construction of a self-identity can be a very complex process that every individual is identity is developed through the lenses of cultural influences and how it is expected to given at birth. Through this given identity we are expected to think, speak, and behave in a certain way that fits the mold of societal norms. This paper aims to explain how gender perform gender roles according these cultural values. I intend to analyze the process in which individuals learned and internalized their respective gender identities, through their cultural background. I will be conducting a set of interviews with the intention to compare my experience as a self-identified male of Mexican descent, to the experience of another male character of Japanese heritage in order to understand how we come to self-identify as masculine in diverged cultures. In this paper, I argue that the construction of gender identities is a direct consequence of societal influential factors such as family values; values that reflect the individual’s culture. This analysis will not only utilize evidence from these identity formations, but also in explaining why and how these self-identities were constructed using both theoretical sources and empirical studies as a framework.
The people’s car – generically, Volkswagen in German – is almost as old as the automobile, and the type was familiar in Germany long before the advent of the Volkswagen. Usually these “popular” cars were minimal cars, though size and simplicity did not necessarily bring them within the reach of the ordinary man in the street.
