The purpose of this assignment was to observe a non-certified staff member implement a program designed by a behavior analyst. Ethical issues that were observed, or potential ethical issues that could arise will be discussed and how they relate to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s (BACB) ethical guidelines. Following the discussion of ethical situations will be possible solutions to prevent ethical dilemmas from occurring while practicing as a behavior analyst. Finally, this paper will conclude with the observer’s personal reaction.
Summary of Observation The observation took place in a self-contained classroom in a public school. Within this classroom the student ranged from first grade and the oldest was in sixth grade. During the time of the observation two learners remained in the classroom and the observer was told that those learners spend the majority of their day in this setting. Three other learners participate in the self-contained classroom as well as an inclusive setting for parts of the day. The time spent in inclusion was not observed. One learner was working one to one with a staff member who was administering and taking date on discrete trials. The staff member would present stimuli, in this case it was a math equation, the learner made a response, and depending on whether or not the response was correct the learner would receive verbal praise or an error correction procedure was implemented.
