Observation of the Child at Play

On Friday I spent the morning with Jacob who is six years one month old at College America. The morning began with a physical assessment and an interview of Jacob, and the afternoon I was able to observe him at play. Jacob is in first grade and he is the oldest child in his family with a younger brother and a younger sister. After doing a physical assessment and an interview with Jacob he appears to be an overall healthy and happy child with no obvious physical or emotional problems. According to Erikson’s developmental stages Jacob is in stage three where Jacob should be developing purpose in his life. Jacob’s bossiness and parenting towards his younger siblings could also fall under the milestone of him doing what he sees the adults in his life doing and he is replicating this especially in this area due to being the oldest and having the responsibility to help with his younger siblings. Jacob definitely engages in rough play. He spent more time rough playing and wrestling not only with his younger brother but also anyone else he could get involved which included two of his mother’s classmates. Jacob did not only also display his ability to share and cooperate better but seemed to really excel in this area for what one might expect for a child at this age. He not only shared the toys but also his drink and food with his brother readily and although he did not seem to be so excited to share as easily with his sister he did without a fight. Based upon my observations and what the book list as social milestones Jacob is right where he should be developmentally when he places and interacts with other children at play. During Jacob’s physical examination and interview I was able to observe many of his physical characteristics and other milestones that he has reached. On physical examination and plotting his height and weight on the growth chart I was able to see that his growth is following the growth curve however he is on the smaller size for his age falling
