From a religious point of view, if God had thought homosexuality is a sin, he would not have created gay people by Howard Dean. Homosexuals have had a hard time coming out and making that first step to accepting themselves in society or religious community. The other steps to actually come out is for their peers, family, and friends to accept them as well into their lives. There are many obstacles for homosexuals as they reach the point to coming out and as it relates to Judaism. According to information published by The Jewish People Policy Planning Institute, there were around 13.1 million Jewish people in the world in 2007, most residing in the USA and Israel. Also, according to the 2001 census, 267,000 people in the UK said that their religious …show more content…
Judaism originated in the Middle East over 3500 years ago and the basics of this religion were founded by Moses. However, Jews trace their history back to Abraham. They believe that there is only one God with whom they have a covenant. The covenant is between God and the Jewish people, which is one of the vital pillars of Judaism. The first covenant was between God and Abraham. God promised to make Abraham the father of a great people and said that Abraham and his descendants must obey God. In return, God would guide them and protect them and give them the land of Israel. The way for Jewish men to show their covenant was to be circumcised as in Genesis 17, you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. Judaism’s religious documents have rich historical principles, but the central and most important religious document is the Torah. The interpretation of the laws of the Torah from Rabbis, spiritual leaders, is oral laws called Halakhah. The rabbis incorporated into the Halakhah a special category that shows their awareness of the irreducible dignity or worth shared by every human being and their sensitivity to the individual needs of people depending upon everyone’s self-image and personal standing in life. Judaism teaches that the human person is essentially a sexual being, a social being, and the image of …show more content…
Levin personal story of his struggles with his sexuality and his religion, there are many health concerns and other harms that homosexuals have to face. As it is natural for people to have sexual desires, however, the Centers for Disease Control, CDC, recently reported alarming rates of STDs among homosexuals that syphilis infections among homosexual men have seen such a massive increase that the government report calls the gay syphilis statistics "troubling." Also, the government report admits that anyone can become infected with an STD, young people and gay and bisexual men are at greatest risk. As the government states that gay men are more likely to get STDs then could we also that they are more likely to get HIV or AIDs. The CDC says that If they are not treated, syphilis causes visual impairment and stroke and increases the chance of catching or transmitting HIV. If homosexuals choose to be sexually active, then it makes sense why their Jewish community would reject them, but not all homosexuals have STDs. Also, as homosexuals are sexually active then their choices will lead them into harm's way. The report states, men account for more than 90 percent of all primary and secondary syphilis cases and men who have sex with men, MSM, account for 83 percent of male cases where the sex of the sex partner is known. With the percentage of homosexuals with syphilis, the report explains that it uses the acronym MSM, men who have sex with men, because that
Judaism started in a desert in Southwest Asia. A man named Abraham is the one that started this religion. God promised Abraham to be the father of many people and to give Abraham the holy land which is now Israel. The symbol is the Star of David. It is a relatively new symbol in the church. The book that is called the Bible in Christianity is called the Torah in Judaism. In Judaism women are equal to men, but they are separate. They have different roles and responsibilities than men have. 37% of Jews live in Israel, the land promised to Abraham by God. While 46% of Jews live in North America. Europe is where 12% of the Jews live, the rest are spread out over Asia and the Southern Hemispheres. Judaism has many holy days, the most Holy is Yom Kippur, other days include Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, and Passover.
Judaism is the religion and culture of the Jewish people. The word “Judaism” derives from the Greek Ioudaismos, a term first used in the Intertestamental Period by Greek-speaking Jews to distinguish their religion from Hellenism. The unifying principles of Judaism are an identity by covenant with God as His “chosen
It all began in the covenant with Abraham, God promised many things to him. God promised numerous descendants, land, and a relationship with him. God’s first blessing would provide Abraham with numerous descendants, which in turn would become a great nation. His second blessing would provide him and his family with a place to call home. His third blessing states that Abraham will have a relationship with God. This means that, anyone who blesses Abraham will be blessed by God, anyone that curses him will be cursed. In return for all of these promises, Abraham and all of his male members and descendants were circumcised to let God know that they belong to him.
Judaism, which originated in the middle east, is one of the oldest religions in the world. Judaism is the religion from where Catholicism and Islam have their roots. The main difference between Judaism and the previously mentioned religions is that Judaism is based on the old testament entirely excluding the new testaments in its teachings. Jews believe that they are the people chosen by God and that because of the covenant they have the duty, more than any other group of people, to keep the law of God. The law of God in Judaism comes in the form of the Torah. The books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, which are said to have been written by Moses, form the Torah.
Although it is argued that America is starting to shy away from patriarchal beliefs, the fact still remains that the United States is a patriarchal society. There are certain struggles women have to face in America, and all over the globe, that men are less likely to encounter. When you bring race, religion, and/or sexual orientation into the equation, things get even more complicated. For example, an issue for a homosexual African American woman might be a more difficult than an issue for a heterosexual Caucasian female would be. Intersectionality focuses on discrimination and oppression towards disenfranchised groups and minorities. Women in general are prime candidates for intersectionality; therefore it is my goal to discover how
The religious philosophy of Judaism during the Second Period time includes: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and Zealots. Judaism is based on worshipping the one true God, circumcision as a sign of being one of God’s chosen people, worships on the Sabbath, obeying God’s laws and following the traditions given from one generation to another.
Judaism is one of the world's oldest religious traditions. Pre-modern Judaism constituted (and traditional Judaism today constitutes) an integrated cultural system of Jewish law,
Further, the Covenant is central for understanding Judaism as it covers all beliefs in relation to the expectations of Jewish life. In the Covenant that God established with Abraham, God blessed him and promised to make him “the father of a multitude of nations.”- Genesis 17:4 in which Abraham was to remain loyal and serve to the rest of the world through God’s blessings. Later, God made the Covenant of Circumcision with Abraham conveyed in the sacred text of the Torah, “Here is my covenant that you are to observe, between me and you and your descendants: Every male among you is to be circumcised.”- Genesis 17:10. Hassidic Jews carry out this practice and believe it is customary that
Judaism is the belief in one God. Judaism is derived from the Torah, the first five books of the bible. The founders of this religion is Abraham and Moses. The God that they worship is Yahweh. This God chose the people of Israel and requires worship, and rituals and believes that if this is done a Messiah will come. The role of God and the Jewish community in each person’s life they have to go through cycles of events that and with traditional rituals. For example after the first Sabbath after the birth of a child, the father is called forward to recite the blessings for the mother
Judaism is a very populous and important religion is this world, which others should know about also, or at least have an idea about. Just like Catholicism, Judaism has holy texts, very sacred to their religion. One of these texts is known as the Halakhah, which is the body of Jewish laws, coming from the Torah, rabbis, and custom. The Halakhah is a very important part to the Jewish people and their religion. The Halakhah is significant in understanding the history of Judaism, shown through a description of the Halakhah, its relation to its time and place, and its lasting contribution to Jewish tradition and authority.
Judaism was developed among the ancient Hebrews found in the Middle East. It is considered one of the oldest monotheistic religion. Judaism is told in the first five books of the Hebrew bible (Old Testament). They believe they have a covenant with one God. Jews trace their history back to Abraham but Judaism was found by Moses. Followers of Judaism, focus on the relationship between the land of Israel, mankind and the relationships between the Creator. There is no formal set of beliefs. Followers of Judaism, believe God chose them to set an example of ethical behavior and holiness. Jews keeps God’s laws in exchange for the many good things God has done for them. They believe it is important to do everything as a community. Where Christians
The most important point raised in the film is the amount of stigma directed toward homosexual males. They are the first of the population to get AIDS and are heavily blamed for the development of the disease. In San Francisco, there are large groups of sexually active males engaging in relations with other males and unknowingly contributing to the spread of early-stage HIV (Vandevyer, C., 1993). Men are just beginning to develop their sexual freedom and gay rights in the community, and are already receiving stigma for their lifestyle and behaviors prior to the outbreak. The term, “gay cancer”, is adopted by the media to describe the immunodeficiency disease, enhancing the perception that AIDS is endemic to the homosexual community. This
To begin, it is important to note that any active and direct persecution was mostly aimed at homosexual males and not homosexual females because any measures were established to protect fertility, and it was thought that unlike males, females were always ready to procreate (Mitchell 249). Beginning in 1933, most of the attacks were made through raids implemented at different gay bars, and in that same year, one of the most notorious events took place; The Institute for Sexual Science, a research institute which advocated for homosexual rights founded by Magnus Hirschfeld, was burned to the ground along with 10,000 of their books (Crowe 143). It was only after the assassination of Hitler’s SA leader Ernst Rohm in 1934 that a more organized and legalized attack was put in motion against homosexuals (Crowe 143). In 1935, it was outlawed for any
A social problem is normally a term used to describe problems with a particular area or group of people in the world. Social problems often involve problems that affect real life. It also affects how people react to certain situations. While differences in racial/ethnic prejudices have been explored extensively in past literature (e.g. Bobo and Zubrinksy’s 1996, study of differential prejudices directed toward Hispanic and Black individuals), little U.S. research has investigated how attitudes toward lesbians, gays, bisexual men, bisexual women, and male-to-female (MtF) and female-to-male (FtM) transgender (henceforth “LGBT”) may differ ( Marcus, 2015).
Judaism is the complex expression of a religious community, a way of life as well as a set of basic beliefs and values, which is separated in patterns of action, social order, and culture as well as in religious statements and concepts. The ideal is to remember God in everything one does, through prayer and keeping the commandments. There are many spiritual practices that the Jewish people follow as a reminder of their faith and as a way to engage all the senses in awareness of God. Some of these scared practices include: circumcision, Sabbath, eating kosher foods, and Bar Mitzvah. Of all of the commandments in Judaism, the brit milah, is probably the one most universally observed. It is commonly referred to as a bris. Even the most seculars of Jews, who observe no other part of Judaism, almost always observe these laws. Boys are ritually circumcised when they are eight days old, to honor the seal of God's commandment to Abraham. A person who is uncircumcised suffers the penalty of kareit, spiritual elimination. Sabbath is the most important ritual observance in Judaism. It is primarily a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. The Jewish Sabbath runs from sunset Friday night to sunset Saturday night. Observant Jewish families begin the Sabbath eve with a special Friday night dinner. The woman of the house lights candles to bring in
