Obstacles for women in the business world

A successful woman is the one who build a firm foundation with bricks which others have thrown at her. Being a successful woman in society is very hard as they have to face a lot of difficulties to reach the top. Men and women are considered to have a specific role in society where men are believed to possess a dominant position over women. Over the years women are supposed to emphasize less on their studies and job but to focus more on taking care of their children and houses. unnecessary beauty standards are set for them to meet and to keep them distracted. One of the most common issues is the gap in wages on the basis of gender and race. Women are being paid less in the business world compared to men while putting the same amount of work and dedication just because of gender inequality that is still happening in Canada even in this modern day world.“In 2009, women in Canada earned on average 74.4 percent of what men earned. In 2010, it was 73.6 percent, and in 2011, it was 72 percent where it remains today” (Evans 2017). Evidently, the issue of the wage gap is increasing, and it is not getting the same amount of light that other problems in Canada are receiving. For instance, the topic of racism is being discussed a lot in Canada, but wage gap on the basis of it is not. Increasing equality for women is not just a moral duty for people to provide them but it is also their right to deserve the same amount of respect for their hard work as men in this society. According to CBC news, if we take steps to fix gender inequality in the workplace, it can give Canada’s economy a 150 billion dollar boost (Evans 2017). So, providing women their rights does not only help women, but it also allows Canada to prosper as a country. Despite all the education and efforts, women are not encouraged to obtain a leadership role in the business world since the industrial environment does not consider them as prominent figures to lead the companies and dominate the society. According to a report by a Vogel a business analyst, “At every stage of the pipeline, women’s likelihood of being promoted to the next level is smaller than men’s, women are 30 percent less likely to get promoted out of an entry-level position and 60 percent less likely to move from middle management into the executive ranks” (Evans 2017). Furthermore, women have shown a great of amount of work in sectors like in news channel, film industry, etc. however, because of discrimination they are prompt from enrolling significant roles in the workplace. Gender inequality is still very prominent in Canada, and if we take a look at the senior management of different companies such as Apple and Samsung, even in parliament, there are more men than women which means that the women are been discriminated. Therefore, the concept of patriarchy applies in this situation as patriarchy tells us that in a society or government, men hold most of the power and women are put aside.
