A successful woman is the one who build a firm foundation with bricks which others have thrown at her. Being a successful woman in society is very hard as they have to face a lot of difficulties to reach the top. Men and women are considered to have a specific role in society where men are believed to possess a dominant position over women. Over the years women are supposed to emphasize less on their studies and job but to focus more on taking care of their children and houses. unnecessary beauty standards are set for them to meet and to keep them distracted. One of the most common issues is the gap in wages on the basis of gender and race. Women are being paid less in the business world compared to men while putting the same amount of work and dedication just because of gender inequality that is still happening in Canada even in this modern day world.“In 2009, women in Canada earned on average 74.4 percent of what men earned. In 2010, it was 73.6 percent, and in 2011, it was 72 percent where it remains today” (Evans 2017). Evidently, the issue of the wage gap is increasing, and it is not getting the same amount of light that other problems in Canada are receiving. For instance, the topic of racism is being discussed a lot in Canada, but wage gap on the basis of it is not. Increasing equality for women is not just a moral duty for people to provide them but it is also their right to deserve the same amount of respect for their hard work as men in this society. According to CBC news, if we take steps to fix gender inequality in the workplace, it can give Canada’s economy a 150 billion dollar boost (Evans 2017). Despite all the education and efforts, women are not encouraged to obtain a leadership role in the business world since the industrial environment does not consider them as prominent figures to lead the companies and dominate the society. The gender wage gap is a phenomenon that is much more complex than at first glance. Certain research has determined that in Canada, women make around 72 cents to the dollar to men, as well as 87 cents to the dollar for an hourly wage, including part-time workers (Canadian Women’s Foundation, 2013). With newly elected prime minister Justin Trudeau identifying as an open feminist, and our country being ranked 9th on the gender inequality index and 9th in the human development index (HDR, 2015), Canada is known to be a progressive country. The Canadian Labour Movement has helped improve many citizens’ careers including those of women, protecting them from discrimination, violence, and harassment at work. Saskatchewan feminism has followed a similar path to Canada concerning women’s rights, most often categorized into three influential periods of time. The gender pay gap is the difference of money that men and women make, that is a crucial example of gender inequality. Gender stereotypes have limited the ability of men and women, judging them with false ideas through the media. All of these have played a major part of women’s rights and gender equality today.
The gender wage gap has been around since women began having jobs and careers. Though in the beginning the gender wage gap was purely do to discrimination by social stereotypes, now it has become more complicated than that. Women remain at an economic disadvantage compared to men due to the fact that some occupations still pay women less than their male counterparts. This unequal pay reinforces the thinking that it is okay for men to make more than women just because of their gender. This is an obstacle within the workplace which prevents a woman from advancing her career and allows for higher positions to continue consisting almost entirely of men. Even though women have been quite successful in seeking employment and many possess a decent education, women continue to face a difference in pay because of their gender. In order to be seen as equals women need to be earning the same amount as their male coworkers because they possess the necessary skills needed to complete the job. Differences in pay should be based on an individual’s qualifications and job experience not their gender. The difference in pay prevents women from achieving success and reinforces the point that women remain at an economic disadvantage. Our society has the belief that women have always been portrayed as weak, emotional, and powerless. Throughout this article by Tavia Grant, it shows how women do not get the same opportunities men receive. Statistically shown, women are still earning less money than men regardless to the amount of education they possess (Grant). Women are accepted to hold obligations regarding family tasks while the men do the providing in the family. The article shows the disadvantages women have in Canada compared to men, however, it also shows gender inequality and gender discrimination.

The business world today is competitive. It's full of fierce, educated, and motivated people. For some people it's tough to rise to the top and for some people it comes much easier. It's not always about hard work! One might ask for a map to the yellow brick road, but few people are ever provided with it. Most people are stuck in an ocean making calculated guesses as to how they can reach land. Which route is the best? How much school is enough? How many certificates of accreditation is enough? How much work experience is enough? All of us ask these questions attempting to navigate our ships in a competitive world were only a few individuals ever get to their targeted career position. How many of those in leadership positions are women?
