Tears roll down the stoic man’s wrinkled face. He inhales deeply, trying to control himself. The woman next to him asks, “Why are you crying?” He sniffles, “I’m just so happy. I wasn’t able to button my shirt last month. Now I can. Even with my Parkinson’s.” The woman smiles at him. “I’m proud of you. You know what your doctor said last week?” she asks him. He shakes his head unable to speak. She grins widely at the man and responds, “He said you strolled right in, swinging your arms and taking wide steps.” The freckled man sniffles more. “You made all the difference.”

I have always been interested in the medical field. It was just a matter of where I would find my niche. I went from wanting to be a doctor to a nurse and eventually landed on an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy requires the individual to be creative, innovative, and compassionate in order to work with unique populations. Since 2010, I have advocated for the arts in communities through my high school art club and my service sorority’s dedication to beautifying the the university. In my short time at Natoli Engineering, I was able to renovate their filing system, making it more efficient and accessible. Compassion, a component that the therapeutic profession and I both value, can be seen in the 180 hours I have spent volunteering at various charities and events.
One of the events includes the Special Olympics. I recall helping an athlete with a button up shirt. She had difficulty with activities involving fine motor skills, so I taught her how to use a bobby pin to thread the buttons through the holes. It required me to think outside of the box. I want to embrace the differences in people and tailor education to the

Occupational Therapy is a vital segment of the health care field. Individuals in this profession make a difference in the lives of others by helping their patients function effectively despite their disability, illness, or injury. They help by teaching patients many activities of daily living tasks which can include, grooming, toileting, dressing, eating, mobility, and much more! Along with the daily living tasks, Occupational Therapy helps individuals to be productive and successful in ways they want to be, like going school, taking care of others, managing their homes, preparing meals. Most importantly, they help their patients adapt to their environments and increase their independent function by helping them perform tasks with as little help from others as possible. Without Occupational Therapy, some patients with temporary disabilities could have a permanent disability. If individuals receive the Occupational treatments, they can prevent the loss of function.

I was walking down the halls of The Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania after an appointment. Every hall had a different theme, the point being to attract the little kids, but one, in particular, had caught my eye. The waves and fish on the walls lead me to a window that glassed a room full of kids. I saw doctors with them, but they looked as if they were just playing with the kids, doing everyday things. A passing doctor caught my stare and approached me, and being at least 12 at the time, I blurted, “what is this?” The doctor went on to tell me that I was watching Occupational Therapy. He explained that not everyone can do the things I do every day, and it was the therapist’s job to help them. Being 12 at the time, I was naive to the fact
