Occupational therapy has a major role with Cerebral Palsy patients as it is an important part of the intervention and treatment program. The main goal of occupational therapy is to ensure high quality living and independence for CP patients, so therapists may employ adaptive processes to help in performing different tasks. Occupational therapy can help with every day activities that patients need to learn for daily use such as dressing, eating, and hygiene. Therapists work on enhancing the physical, cognitive, and social abilities as well as fine motor skills and posture.
Daily tasks like hygiene and mobility may become very tough for cerebral palsy patient due to motor skills impairment which lead to limitation in movement. Occupational therapist assesses the child’s movements and coordination and recommends the child's individual needs that can help with motor impairment. For example, activities may include stretching and constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT), which is treatment intervention that forces the use of the affected side of the body while restraining the unaffected side by using casts, gloves, mittens, and slings while the child is encouraged to receptively and intensively use the affected limb. Moreover, occupational therapist assesses the child’s cognitive functioning by testing the cerebral activities such as reasoning, attention, and memory. For a child with

Parents and caregivers are being under stress and may face difficulties raising a child with cerebral palsy, so therapy enhance the child’s health, independence, and skills required within the environmental sets in order to reduce the pressure on them. Occupational therapists work with families and caregivers to determine the child’s needs and set goals that are important to the child and his/her
These activities include bathing, getting dressed, and cooking meals. In long-term facilities such as nursing homes or inpatient rehabilitation facilities, the occupational therapist may have patients partake in activities and games to improve balance and hand-eye coordination, with the ultimate goal of improving mobility to reduce falls and other injuries. Occupational therapists also work with people who have experienced traumatic brain injuries. They help stroke victims by providing exercises that help the patient learn how to use their arms and legs again. Pediatric occupational therapists work with children in various settings, helping the children achieve academic and non-academic goals.
As ethical and moral physical therapists, it is essential to consider all possible sources of the impairment and figure out how to resolve, educate, and prevent future implications for patients. In order to be able to complete such a task, physical therapists must be able to look at functional status through all of its domains, biophysical, psychological, and sociocultural.2,5 In the realm of pediatrics, performing screenings, functional tests, and questionnaires offer a great diagnostic and prognostic data for children. The DDST3 enables a PT to get a sense of a child's cognition, motor functions, and behavior. Identifying possible delays or problems early on is vital in order to ensure proper development, especially since many systems have
As a PA I deal with clients with cerebral palsy according to nature and extent of their deformity. I always ensure that I use effective communication skills when assisting people to move or reposition.
Introduction Theory has been described as a set of ideas that help us to better understand and explain the concepts behind different behaviours (Tufan & Cole, 2008). As described by Duncan (2009), theories are different ideas that are linked and form the basis for action. (Duncan A.S, E, 2009). In occupational therapy, theories work alongside conceptual models and frames of reference to guide therapists in using the most suitable assessment or therapy for their client (Joosten, V.A, 2015). This essay will discuss the reason theory is used in occupational therapy and how it is implemented in the OT process.
Occupational Therapy is a vital segment of the health care field. Individuals in this profession make a difference in the lives of others by helping their patients function effectively despite their disability, illness, or injury. They help by teaching patients many activities of daily living tasks which can include, grooming, toileting, dressing, eating, mobility, and much more! Along with the daily living tasks, Occupational Therapy helps individuals to be productive and successful in ways they want to be, like going school, taking care of others, managing their homes, preparing meals. Most importantly, they help their patients adapt to their environments and increase their independent function by helping them perform tasks with as little help from others as possible. Without Occupational Therapy, some patients with temporary disabilities could have a permanent disability. If individuals receive the Occupational treatments, they can prevent the loss of function.
Occupational therapy, to me, is rehabilitation services that are given to a client in order for them to regain or obtain as much independence as possible to fulfill meaningful activities in their daily lives. This particular case study is about AK, a 2-year-old girl diagnosed with diplegia. As a future occupational therapist, it is important to assess everything about our clients in order to implement successful interventions. “ Occupational therapists are skilled in evaluating all aspects of the domain, their interrelationships, and the client within his or her contexts and environments”(AOTA, 2014).
I have always been energized by helping and connecting with people. Growing up, I wanted to be at the counter helping when my mom baked, I followed my dad around the driveway helping him perfectly polish the car tires, I was president of the club that gave tours and support to new students in high school, and in college I worked as a Botany lab tutor using varied teaching techniques to help students understand class concepts. When I started planning my career, I knew it would need to involve forming helping relationships combined with my enthusiasm for teaching. This led me logically to serving in the Peace Corps followed by completing two years in AmeriCorps.
Occupational therapy has been in the process of continued development since the 1900’s. With several contributors helping to build the groundwork for creating the awareness needed to bring occupational therapy into the field of health care. Continued research is contributing to the ongoing significance of how occupational therapy is a vital aspect in promoting increased independences in all aspects of healthcare. (Willard, Schell, 2014) With the incorporation of “Occupational Therapy Practice Framework Domain and Process (3rd ed.)” helps creates the foundation for occupational therapy clinicians as well as other health care providers in facilitating the core believe of occupational and the relationship of health and occupation. (AOTA 2014) Therefore, providing a uniform outline of the various aspects of each individual and how they are interconnected to create the foundation of each individual. With a greater understanding of the foundations of that induvial, the clinician can then facilitate the best therapeutic treatment plan for that individual to achieve their personal goals with unified foundations of care.
In this day and age, there are so many health careers out there most people don’t even know where to start when looking for an occupation that truly interest them. I’ve spent my whole life not knowing what I wanted to grow up to be and worrying about not knowing what to study in college. This past year I have recently been looking into Occupational Therapy. This form of therapy is to help those recuperating from physical or mental illness that encourages rehabilitation through the performance of activities required in daily life (What Is Occupational Therapy?, n.d.). People who work in this field are referred to as Occupational Therapist.

Occupational Therapy in children with mental disabilities is growing every year. The use of Occupational Therapy in Low Vision Rehabilitation Patients with low vision impairment from macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, can have major difficulties to complete daily tasks. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 28 adults over the age of 40 in the United States have low vision, a number that is expected to increase significantly over the next 20 years due to an aging population. Approximately 2/3 of older adults with vision impairment live alone in their own homes. There are several ways an occupational therapist helps people with low vision to function at the highest possible level. (3)
