Sneaking up on me, the end of my senior year is starting appearing, the most frequent question I get asked is,” What are you going to do after high school?” That question for me isn't a hard one--in fact, it is rather easy. At the age of 10, I knew I wanted to become some type of teacher, or someone in the medical field, I didn't know what exactly.
At the age of 15 I was in an accident that helped me realize what I wanted to become. In my accident, I ended up pulling various muscles in my neck, back, and right shoulder. This caused me to go through about five months of physical therapy. As sophomore year rolled around, I had just completed therapy, and I was almost cleared to do cheer activities. This helps the patient to mature with confidence and strength. Pediatric OT can work in hospitals, schools, outreach programs, and privately owned facilities. To obtain a degree you must have a bachelor's degree. Depending on the area and how much experience you've had determines the pay.
Another area where I have witnessed the use of occupational therapy is in the Special Education Department at my high school. There is a unit where the severely handicapped students are educated, and licensed OTs regularly visit to evaluate the students and instruct the teachers on skills and techniques to help their students learn and grow.
Depending on what type of OT program you wanted to enter in depends on what steps and training you would need. I want to become and OTD in pediatrics. In order to get my degree I will have to take, Applied Statistics, Management Concepts in Occupational Therapy, and Writing in the Health Sciences. These classes will help me get my bachelors degree. Then to get my Doctorate degree, the classes are Contemporary Theories and Models in OT Practice, Critical Analysis of Occupational Science, Academic, and Critical Teaching in Occupational Therapy, Culture and Occupation, Doctoral Level Leadership, Program Development and Grant Writing, Evidence-Based Practice and Research 1, Evidence-Based Practice and Research 2, and Capstone in Occupational Therapy.
