Leadership qualities that I have demonstrated in my current role as Senior Project Manager at OPDCA include communication with my coworkers and customers, being a motivator to my staff, delegating tasks, flexibility, and commitment. I believe these qualities are important for being a strong leader at Mississippi State University because they help me manage and lead others well. These traits also make me a strong example for my coworkers. My goal is that my leadership strengths will help inspire my coworkers to do their best work, and grow professionally for OPDCA.
Communication is important to me because it is a key component in maintaining professional relationships with my coworkers and customers. For example, part of my responsibilities as a project manager is scheduling and conducting scoping meetings with customers at Mississippi State University. During these meetings it is important for me to listen to the customer’s needs and wants for their project. By listening, it allows me to produce creative designs that meet both building codes and their scope of work. By maintaining good working relationships with customers, they gain trust in me that their project will be executed well and meet their expectations. After I meet with customers, I take their program and delegate tasks to other people involved with the project. This includes getting information from product manufacturers, organizing drawings and specifications to work management, working with facilities management shops, and handling construction administration once the project is being constructed. I only ever miss school, practice or work if I have no other option available to me, and when I do miss, I try to make up my work as quickly as I can. To me a strong leader is one who can effectively develop an idea which they can they can then achieve by conveying this idea to others and motivating them to reach the goal with themselves. The importance of communication skills can be seen when good, quality communication occurs that prevents misunderstandings, miscommunication and conflict. It produces productive work and performance which ultimately impacts the company's bottom line. A vital part of communication is making employees feel understood and valued. Specific campaigns can help boost employee morale and give workers a chance to feel recognized and valued. When there is a strong morale in offices and other work environments, job retention is often high as well. Perfect communication at all times is not always possible but clearing up problems can be handled quickly by asking the right questions. This is where the importance of communication skills comes in. Find out if everyone shares a solid understanding, not only of goals, but expected time frames to complete tasks, possible costs and other aspects of the job.
