Leadership qualities that I have demonstrated in my current role as Senior Project Manager at OPDCA include communication with my coworkers and customers, being a motivator to my staff, delegating tasks, flexibility, and commitment. I believe these qualities are important for being a strong leader at Mississippi State University because they help me manage and lead others well. These traits also make me a strong example for my coworkers. My goal is that my leadership strengths will help inspire my coworkers to do their best work, and grow professionally for OPDCA.
Communication is important to me because it is a key component in maintaining professional relationships with my coworkers and customers. For example, part of my responsibilities as a project manager is scheduling and conducting scoping meetings with customers at Mississippi State University. During these meetings it is important for me to listen to the customer’s needs and wants for their project. By listening, it allows me to produce creative designs that meet both building codes and their scope of work. By maintaining good working relationships with customers, they gain trust in me that their project will be executed well and meet their expectations. After I meet with customers, I take their program and delegate tasks to other people involved with the project. Effective communication in the work place is essential to make sure that information is passed on, to make sure that the client’s needs and problems can be assessed properly, if there are any changes that effect the care then it needs to be passed on to the team at work, to build good relationships with your team members and clients.
The other quality of a leader that I exhibit is hard work and dedication. I do my best to make each assignment or activity I do the best it can possibly be. I only ever miss school, practice or work if I have no other option available to me, and when I do miss, I try to make up my work as quickly as I can. The leadership qualities that I have always been known to have in the work that I always do are persistence and patience. I strongly believe that my family and Mexican-American heritage have significantly contributed to my leadership qualities since taking care of my autistic brother while my Mom works almost every day was a struggle for me but I adopted patience and persistence which helped me manage to take care of my brother and do school work simultaneously.
Over the last five years, I have evolved into a transformational leader in both my leadership roles. As a leader, I have identified both strengths and weaknesses. The first strength of my leadership has always been to be a role model. I have always tried my best to lead by example. I have always been a firm believer that one’s actions always speak much louder than one’s words.
The key strengths of my personal characteristics outlined are as follows: self-confidence, emotional intelligence, motivating people to deliver the vision, being a good role model, managing performance effectively and providing support and stimulation. Looking back to an inspiring leader of mine, George Washington, I see a man that was able to influence other to do great things that ultimately formed the United States after overcoming great odds against Great Britain.
