Was Odysseus a hero or not?
Have you ever wondered what is a hero and what makes them? What actually makes them a hero in the eyes of the world? Many people may disagree with some people on what makes a hero. This report is about Odysseus was and wasn't a hero in his stories and others. Many people may agree and disagree that this report shows how Odysseus was and wasn't a hero in my way upon reading the stories. In some ways Odysseus was a hero when he sent out some of his men to the island of lotus flowers and the home of the man eating giants. When the men were sent out they ate the flowers and forgot about him. In which Odysseus went and dragged them off the island to bring them home. Even though they did not remember their home land and homes. So Odysseus tied them down to the bottom of benches and sailed away into the sea. Another way Odysseus was a hero was when he escaped from the Cyclops underneath the bellies of the sheep. He got most of his men out and away from the Cyclops from the sheep, but he lost a few men to the Cyclops. The men he had lost was eaten by the Cyclops himself and was soon ready to feast on the rest of the crew of the ship. While escaping from the Cyclops the men had taken the sheep upon the boat with them. Odysseus took the biggest one out of the herd of sheep. Odysseus was also a hero when he was home in the beginning. He was somewhat a hero in the beginning because he had acted very crazy and acted like he knew no one. He acted this way
“Now shrugging off his rags the wiliest fighter of the islands leapt and stood on the broad door still, his own bow in his hand” (Homer 557). In epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a hero because he makes a clever decisions by gaining a close connection with Circe, he is cautious for he built his bed out of an olive tree, protecting his family from imposters, and he is cunning, for he allows his men to successfully escape Polyphemus’ cave.
Odysseus is not a hero because he lets his pride make most of his decisions, which gets him into difficult situations. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus makes mistakes that causes his men to be killed. Most of these mistakes could have been fixed by Odysseus making better decisions throughout his journey.
Odysseus portrays himself as anything but a hero throughout Homer’s The Odyssey. Odysseus goes through his life believing he is the best. He has no regard for anyone’s feelings but his own, and he believes nothing and no one can harm him, not even the gods. Odysseus feels he is always the leader and no one can tell him otherwise. Odysseus should not be considered a hero because he portrays himself as a selfish man that failed his crew, and is controlled by his hubris.
Odysseus is a hero because he acts courageously while facing the many challenges he encounters. Odysseus’s shows great bravery when he engages in physical challenges. Odysseus daringly fights against the suitors, while significantly outnumbered: “For I must
The majority of those who read The Odyssey consider the protagonist of the story, Odysseus, a hero. On many occasions, however, Odysseus makes decisions beneficial to himself alone. For example, when Odysseus and his men find themselves on Polyphemus's island, Odysseus's actions are self-centered and at the expense of his men. This can be said for most of Odysseus's actions in the story, as his main objective is to reach his home. Having his men by his side when he returns seems a trivial thing to him. Odysseus could be considered a hero, but many of his actions say otherwise. Due to the many unfaithful and self-centered decisions he makes in the story, Odysseus is not a hero.
First, Odysseus is not a hero because he is a foolish leader who makes many mistakes on his journey back home to Ithaka. His first mistake is his decision to let his men raid and
Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” True heroes are those who do something for others rather for themselves, Odysseus doesn’t exactly show this trait in The Odyssey. In The Odyssey, Odysseus along with his men try to go back home to Ithaca but due to Odysseus nature, only he actually returns alive. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus proves he is not a hero because he is arrogant, secretive, and unfaithful; resulting for readers to believe that every action has an consequence.
In the Greek literature of mythology, we have examined Odysseus. Students and scholars alike debate whether Odysseus was a true hero, as read in The Odyssey. There is much supporting evidence to prove all sides of the debate and opinions held of Odysseus. It is of my opinion that Odysseus is a hero in his homeland, his family, the Greek people, and for us to learn from to this day. Odysseus had encompassed three many qualities that I believe made him a hero. He embodied, mental strength, physical strength, and spiritual strength. I would like to advocate for why Odysseus was a hero.

Odysseus is not a hero because he constantly puts his men in danger and makes decisions without thinking. Odysseus is sailing away from Cyclops Island and he is teasing Polyphemus about escaping. The crew tries to get Odysseus to be quiet, but his ego gets in the way, and he tells Polyphemus his name; leading to Polyphemus cursing him and his men to make the journey home slow and painful. Odysseus tells the Phaeacians in his story, “So they spoke, but they could not persuade my great-hearted spirit; and I answered him again with angry heart: “‘Cyclops, if any one of mortal men shall ask thee about the shameful blinding of thine eye, say that Odysseus, the sacker of cities, blinded it, even the son of Laertes, whose home is in Ithaca’””(Homer.9.500-506). Odysseus comments that his crew tried to calm him down and get him to stop talking, but he
For generations, heroes have always fascinated people and people have strived to achieve certain qualities of their heroes. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is considered the hero of the story. While Odysseus does demonstrate some qualities that are not heroic, he is still defined as a hero because of his better, more heroic qualities in which he is far superior in than any other man. The qualities in which define Odysseus as a hero are courage, intelligence, and leadership.
In the end, I think Odysseus is a hero because although he does make mistake and although no one is perfect he tried his best to get him and his men home safely. Odysseus has many good qualities consisting of quick thinking, creativity, protectiveness, and many more. He also has bad qualities like curiosity and ignorance. So even though people make mistakes and don’t always do the right thing I think that they can still be a
My reasoning as to why Odysseus is a hero is because when Odysseus interferes with the lotus eaters. The crow of Odysseus eats the Lotus Eaters (plant that does not want you leave the island) then causing Odysseus to tie them to the ship so they do not stay and not come home. This shows remarks as to why Odysseus is a hero as he did not need to tie them to the ship, but instead could of just left them on the island Djerba.
Odysseus was a hero because he was a leader who steered his men out of trouble. He had great skills and was very intelligent. Odysseus is a king with great leadership. In the tale of The Odyssey, Odysseus awakens to Lord Alcinous' island.
Many would say that Odysseus was a hero, as he was a slayer of monsters and a major role in the Trojan wars since he was nicknamed the ‘Master Strategist’ during the war. However there are several reasons he was never a hero in the first place. His beliefs, actions, and decisions are threes examples of why, by modern terms, Odysseus is no hero
