Odysseus: A Strong Leader

In the Odyssey, Odysseus is an amazing leader because, time after time, get his men out of difficult situations. For example, Odysseus gets his men out of a difficult situation on the island of cyclops. He does this by blinding the eye of the cyclops, then riding out on the sheep when they get let out, saving most of his men. He felt the urge to get his men out because they were getting eaten. He is a good leader because he cares for his men and gets them out of difficult situations. Odysseus also saves his men when they are with Circe. She turns half of them into pigs, so to keep the other half human, he slept with her. So she let them stay safe with her for a year because of Odysseus. He saves his men once again by doing this. Odysseus shows how to be a true leader. Odysseus members obey him to show how good of a leader he is. Homer said that his crew “delivered me from my restraint.” Homers crew members show that he was a good leader by showing respect. They also respect everything he does as if he respects them.

In The Odyssey, Odysseus is clearly the main character. As the main character he has many leadership roles, He is the leader of his men in the military, a leader of his son later on in the book, and lastly he is a leader to his wife as a husband. Those are the leadership roles that will be touched on in the analysis. Odysseus is a very resectable man who usually has good morals but will do extreme things to get home to save his wife from the suitors of Ithaca, and to protect his men on the journey back ( although sadly they would not make it because they angered a god after eating his cattle ). Early in the book Odysseus is introduced by recounting his journey home from the Trojan War, he is leading men back from the battle that he fought in the Illiad.

The Odyssey by Homer takes us into the life of an exceptional leader. Many of Odysseus’ choices and actions show his genuine leadership skills. Odysseus retains moral responsibilities throughout his hardships while undoubtedly being a great leader. He and his crew endure many challenges, obstacles, and dangers around every corner. Odysseus never fails to make the right decision, which is essential of being a great leader.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus is a leader of men. As one examines his narrative of the voyages and encounters with various people and challenges, it becomes evident that his capabilities as a leader are varied, and he as a character is often nuanced and contradictory in his representation of these characteristics. This can be seen in many of his adventures, but especially in his encounter with the Cicones, his brush with the Cyclops Polyphemus, and his experiences on Aeaea, the island of Circe.

Odysseus from the Odyssey is a controversial figure because it can sometimes be unclear if he is supposed to be a hero or not. However, It is actually very clear. Odysseus is most definitely a hero because of all of the things that he did to help his men survive as long as possible. By no means was Odysseus a perfect leader but he learned from his mistakes and he was an effective leader.

In Greek literature of mythology, we have examined Odysseus. Students and scholars alike have held debates about Odysseus. The discussion is whether Odysseus was a true hero, as read in The Odyssey. There is abundant supportive evidence to verify all sides of the debate and opinions held about Odysseus. Odysseus had encompassed many qualities that I believe make him a hero. The qualities he embodied were mental strength, physical strength, and spiritual strength. I would like to advocate for why Odysseus was a hero.

In the poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus, the main character, travels away from his home and finds himself in a situation that prevents him from going back for a long period of time. During the times of trouble, Odysseus reveals characteristics about himself that might otherwise have been hidden if it were not for the journey. This defines his character and shows him to be not an admirable hero. Odysseus first shows this when he successfully escapes from the Cyclops’s home but made a drastic mistake and says: ‘O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions?

For generations, heroes have always fascinated people and people have strived to achieve certain qualities of their heroes. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is considered the hero of the story. While Odysseus does demonstrate some qualities that are not heroic, he is still defined as a hero because of his better, more heroic qualities in which he is far superior in than any other man. The qualities in which define Odysseus as a hero are courage, intelligence, and leadership.

He continued to persevere to make sure him and his crew get home. Showing amazing fighting skills and making the hard decisions that others could not make. Odysseus was great leader because of the complicated decisions he made in sirens and the strength and perseverance in the cyclops cave.

The Odyssey is Homer’s epic tale of Odysseus and his 10 year journey back home after fighting in the Trojan War. Odysseus, a prideful, famed soldier and king of Ithaca in Greece, has already been at war for 10 years and while he and his crewmen try to return home, they encounter many obstacles and enemies, including sea monsters, nymphs, cyclopes, and storms. Odysseus uses his strength, wit and brute force to defeat his foes and escape. This would make him a hero in ancient times. However, in modern times, a hero can be described as a caring and selfless leader. Such individuals include Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., who both fought using non-violence. They made sacrifices to help the people instead of personal interests, such as

“The art of leadership is saying no, and not saying yes”(Tony Blair). In the Odyssey, Odysseus is the captain of a large fleet trying to get back to their home, Ithaca. Odysseus, with his crew, had to go through many obstacles to return to Ithaca. Odysseus was a bad leader because he was selfish, arrogant, and couldn’t control his men.

In the epic poem The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus is a good leader because his men put their faith and loyalty in him and Odysseus can use his wits to get his men out of deadly crises.
