In the book The Odyssey, the main character is Odysseus. He is the King of Ithaca. Odysseus is brave, cleaver, and smart. He is also noble. He has a son named Telemachus. His wife's name was Penelope. In the poem it says, "For Homer, Odysseus is a loyal husband, loving father, and a true hero who wants nothing more than to return to his home and his loved ones. To achieve this goal he even turns down an easy chance at immortality: not a gift which is frequently given to begin with and not usually without a great deal of hardship in the bargain." First, Odysseus blinds a Cyclopes. His men had blind him instead of killing him because the door was too heavy for his men to move. They hid in the Cyclopes cave. They had to be careful to watch where the Cyclopes was so that he would not eat them. When he blinded the Cyclopes, he could not resist telling the Cyclopes his name. This caused for a difficult journey trying to get home. He does not see his homeland for ten long years after the Trojan War. Odysseus counseled Achilles to let the Achaean men eat and rest back on the offensive and kill the Trojans immediately. Odysseus is frequently viewed as a man of the mean, renowned for his self-restraint and diplomatic skills. When the Achaean ships reached the beach of Troy, no one would jump ashore, since there was an oracle that the first Achaean to jump on Trojan soil would die. Odysseus tossed hid shield on the shore and jumped on his shield. He was followed by Protesilaus, who jumped on Trojan soil and later became the first to die. Arriving at home, Odysseus detects his palace swarmed by suitors. The suitors trying to strive for his wife, he plans to attack the suitors by dressing up as a beggar. Taking the prize, Odysseus kills all of the suitors. Indecisive, Penelope tests Odysseus on their bed and then Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, welcomes her husband back home. Throughout the journey, Odysseus reveals his heroic traits of intelligence, skill, and resourcefulness.
He showed his bravery and cunning when he encountered the Cyclops. Odysseus and his men manage to escape from the Cyclops. Odysseus has the idea of blinding the Cyclops and hiding under the sheep. This led them to get out of the Cyclops's cave without getting hurt again. The Cyclops opened the door without knowing Odysseus and his men were there waiting for the door to open.
Overall, with his many exceptional qualities like his loyalty, bravery, and cleverness, Odysseus demonstrates many moments of how he acts like a hero should. However, even though Odyssey manages to act heroically in quite a few portions of The Odyssey, he still creates many errors throughout his journey home. These errors often directly contradict what the epic suggests a hero is. One of these instances occurs right as he and his remaining men are fleeing Polyphemus. The Odyssey is a story telling about the long journey of Odysseus, and his adventures with his crew. It tells about his dangerous encounters with a Cyclops, sea monsters and Sirens, and eventually making it home safe to his wife, Penelope. Although modern literary scholars of The Odyssey have argued that Odysseus is a hero, closer examination shows that Odysseus is not a hero. He is selfish to his crew by making decisions to put them in danger, he is unfaithful to his wife on the journey and does unjust actions by killing the Cyclops without a good explanation, and going out of his way to a sea monster. These actions put his crew in jeopardy. While a good leader and a hero do selfless acts, Odysseus did selfish acts.

While being locked in a cave with a man eating Cyclops, Odysseus rallies his men in attempt to blind the Cyclops Polyphemus. While on the verge of death, with an enraged Cyclops, Odysseus stays serene while jeopardizing the life of his crew.

The Odyssey is about a 20 year-long travel of a man named Odysseus. He traveled to Troy facing the dangers on many mythical creatures and many fictional creatures. This king of Ithaca, left his beloved wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus, that he has not seen since his son was a young child.
