‘A man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities’ is the dictionary definition of a hero, but the qualities that make one a hero can differ drastically. In the Odyssey, Odysseus plays the role of the heroic character. He is brave, able to overcome fear, intelligent, cunning, and much more. Many characters in the Iliad could be perceived as the hero. Personally, I think it was Patrocolus who took on that role, who was willing to sacrifice himself for the better of his people. Heroes in the modern day are everywhere, but with much less recognition than those in the Odyssey and Iliad. In addition to that, they don’t have to take a 10 year journey facing sea monsters and cyclops just to get home to be considered a hero. …show more content…

Some may argue that he isn’t a hero at all, but I think that his heroic qualities, like bravery and honesty, outweigh his not-so heroic ones. Odysseus is brave because of the way he overcame a fear of his for the benefit of his crew. When Odysseus and his crew landed on the island of Circe, she turned Odysseus’ crew into swine, or pigs. Odysseus eventually persuades her to turn his crew back into men; but when she does so, they were under a trance that she would only diminish if Odysseus went to the Underworld.
