Odysseus was on his way home from the war. It would take Odysseus 10 years to travel back to his homeland of Ithaca. On his way to home he encounters the island of the Cyclopes. When he’s on the island of Cyclops he becomes clever.
The first way Odysseus is clever is when the cyclopes goes to sleep Odysseus and his men are wondering if they should stab the Cyclopes or not. On paragraph 27 It says “But on second thoughts I refrained realizing that we would seal our own fate as well as his, because we would have found it impossible with our unaided hands to push aside the huge rock with which he had closed the great mouth of the cave.”
This supports the claim because if he had killed the Cyclopes than they would have been stuck in the cave
Odysseus is clever and brave. Odysseus is a very clever man. For example when Odysseus and his crew come to an island of Cyclops. They wander into a huge cave that eventually is revealed to be a cyclops’ home.
For one he told the Cyclops his name is nobody. This is witty because he knows that when he stabs the cyclops in the eye and he cries out for help, no one will come to help him because he will say nobody has stabbed him. In addition to telling the cyclops that his name is nobody, he also escapes the cave riding underneath the sheep. This is showing cleverness because Odysseus knows that if he and his men try to escape the cave they will get caught, so he decided to ride underneath the sheep’s belly to escape from the now blind cyclops.
During the problem with the Cyclops, Odysseus constantly shows how clever he is. Odysseus knows how to stay calm for most of it and uses his rightful mind to outsmart the Cyclops. Odysseus may have
This part of what Odysseus did was not smart at all in fact now it will follow him forever. So the cyclops cursed Odysseus and told his dad about what had happened. After this happens Odysseus starts to use more of his mind a cleverness and holds himself back from doing stupid things and making irrational decisions such as the
To begin Odysseus is clever when it comes down to escaping the cyclops. After gouging the cyclops eye Odysseus came up with a plan after spotting the sheep,” so three sheep could convey each man, I took the wooliest ram, the choicest of the flock, and hung myself under his belly” (Homer IX. 382-384). Odysseus shows creativity when using the cyclops sheep as a way out. In addition Odysseus shows creativity when talking to his son about the attack on the suitors.
In the epic poem, the Odyssey, by Homer Odysseus experiences many amazing events before arriving at home in Ithaka. I believe that the experiences that he has had on his long journey and his personality will not allow Odysseus to be at peace in his homeland. Odysseus has been away from home for about twenty years. He has experienced many trials and adventures on his prolonged journey home. I believe that Odysseus will not be at peace in his homeland because he has been a warrior since an early age, he is not patient, and most importantly, he has a very curious mind.
Odysseus’ natural born intelligence let him had a narrow escape. In the video and the poem Odysseus had decided twice when should he kill the cyclops. The first time he try to kill the cyclops, but he hesitated and thought if he kill him then all of his crew will be trapped in this cave
Even though Odysseus finds himself in many difficult circumstances, he stays clever throughout his long journey. Odysseus used his cleverness in many different ways. One way he used it was to get on some of the good sides. On page 100 of The Odyssey it says, “By night, indeed, within Calypso’s cave, he slept with her: so side by side they lay, the willing and unwilling. But by day,
Odysseus Overcame his foe (the cyclops) because of his analytical skills he was always focused on the current task which was to get out of the cyclops's cave alive. After the cyclops had ate two of his men Odysseus knew he was a threat but he thought to himself “ If I kill him we perished there as well, for we could never move his ponderous doorway slab aside.”-(Homer) This quotes show how Odysseus thinks analytically by thinking ahead on how to escape. He then put his goal into a step by step plan. He starts by blinding the cyclops by stabbing his eye but now he needs to escape and Odysseus says “ Twining cords of willow from the ogre's bed; then slung a
In Book 9, Odysseus does battle with a popular Greek Mythology creature the Cyclopes. Here Odysseus shows us how cunning he can be. While trapped Odysseus really fears that he will never see that homeland of Ithaca ever again. He is very mournful and we see just how much he misses home. He finally realizes how to escape from the Cyclops. He stabs the Cyclops in his only eye blinding him. He then tells the monster
One of the challenges Odysseus faces on his journey back to Ithaca is the land of the Lotus Eaters. The Lotus Eaters showing “no will to do us harm” (489) offers Odysseus and his men a sweet honeyed plant. Who ever ate the Lotus became “forgetful of their homeland” (489) and “longed to stay forever” (489). Odysseus and his men need to overcome the temptations of staying there eating Lotus any time they want. They have to fight the internal battle of giving in to the sweet honeyed plant and instead they need to stay strong and support each other. Seeing his men losing desire to return home because of this dangerous honeyed plant, Odysseus knows he has to do something fast before all hope of returning to Ithaca is lost. Taking action into his
Firstly, Homer uses many descriptive words and phrases to describe Odysseus as an intelligent person. While Odysseus and his men are stuck in the Cyclops’ cave, Odysseus tells the Cyclops “[his] name is Nohbdy” (360-361) in order to protect his identity. This external conflict with the Cyclops shows how smart Odysseus is. He fools the Cyclops by making him think he is someone he is not.
The Cyclops says to the Cyclopes: “Nohbdy’s tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me.” The Cyclopes reply: “Ah well, if nobody has played you foul there in your lonely bed, we are no use in pain given by the great Zeus.” Odysseus’ cleverness helped him evade the fate that would have befallen him if the other Cyclopes caught him. One more leadership quality possessed by Odysseus is wisdom. Odysseus’ wisdom is displayed when Odysseus conquers the town of Ismarus. Odysseus says: “I told them ‘Back, and quickly!
Since the cyclops’ vision is impaired, Odysseus “tied them silently together, twining/cords of willow from the ogre’s bed/then slung a man under each middle one/to ride there safely, shielded left and right/So three sheep could convey each man” (Homer 500). Odysseus possess the trait of cleverness which is demonstrated through his quick thinking and by only using using the resources available to free his men from Polyphemus’ grasp. He is a man to be revered because he uses his cunning skills to help others reach safety. Odysseus is also the last man to exit the cave because he puts their lives before his. He is also willing to take the responsibility and consequences of their actions. For example, if the cyclops were to notice him he would force his men escape and leave him behind to be devoured. Odysseus is a hero, for his willingness to put his companions’ lives before his own and use of his wits to save those around him.
The first great trait of Odysseus is the fact that he is very smart. At one point in the story, Odysseus is stuck in a cave with a triclops, and needs a way out, and he has the smarts to get himself and his men out, by getting the triclops drunk. “There is Liquor to wash down your scraps of men” (9 254). By getting the triclops drunk, they have more time to figure out a way to get out. This shows that Odysseus does not want to give up, and he wants to keep going to get to his home land. In addition, Odysseus’s smarts come into play again, after stabbing the triclops in the eye, he opens the door and is trying to find who stabbed him. “So three sheeps could convoy each man” (9 346). This is their way out, but how do they not get thrown away bwy the triclops arm? Odysseus’s solution is to hide under sheep, and have the sheep walk out, and shield them from the triclops. Odysseus is smart enough to get himself
