In Homer's The Odyssey, he portrays Odysseus, the hero of the story, as clever and brave. Nobody wants a hero to lose so Homer gives him admirable traits so that readers find themselves rooting for him. On the other hand Polyphemus, the monster, is made to be hostile, beast-like and dimwitted. He makes Odysseus look brave and heroic.
One trait that Odysseus has is that he is very clever. One example of this would be when he tells Polyphemus that his name is Nobody. “ But Polyphemus shouted out to them from inside the cave, “Nobody is killing me by fraud! Nobody is killing me by force!” This was smart of him to do because it helped keep his identity hidden. Odysseus is also the only one who is smart enough to not consume the lotus flower which
In my eyes a hero is a person who shows courage, is humble, does not give up, and is someone everybody can relate to. The protagonist in “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is a hero because although he is emotional throughout the book and lets his emotions take over his actions, he displays immense courage and perseveres through his journey and hardships.
Heroes are everywhere, no matter how small their heroic actions may be. However, what is a hero? A hero is someone who helps others without regard to themselves. A person like Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, who put Tom Robinson in front of his own reputation, and was called a “black lover” in the racist community for doing the right thing. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus has done this more than once on his journey home, however he also has been selfish. Odysseus is a man who has been both heroic, like when he rescued his men from Circe, but he has also done unheroic actions, like when he didn’t tell his men about the dangerous bag of wind.
The Greeks believe a hero is someone who's experienced life and death but in modern society we simply don't believe in heroes unless it may be someone in our own lives. A hero must be someone smart who knows what they're enemies are thinking and uses their surroundings to adapt to any situation. Anyone can fit the qualities of being a good human being but not all of them can be like Odysseus. In “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is a intelligent, loyal and strong hero, exactly like the type of heroes we have in modern times since no one is abnormal and/or is trying to save the world.
A quote from Epictetus, a Greek stoic philosopher, describes skillful pilots as gaining their reputation and glory through surmounting their storms and tempests. In the epic The Odyssey by Homer, one man named Odysseus shows his glory and builds his reputation in different ways. Odysseus is a skillful pilot in which he overcomes a long journey, a suppressed identity, and a battle in his own home.
“You can't relate to a superhero, to a superman, but you can identify with a real man who in times of crisis draws forth some extraordinary quality from within himself and triumphs but only after a struggle.” This very strong analysis of a hero by Timothy Dalton, shedding light to the idea that a heroic character who can seem immensely powerful are very hard to relate with, but share similar struggles. To put it in perspective, a superhero often struggles to overcome obstacles and their distinct traits. Likewise, throughout Odysseus’ journey in The Odyssey, Odysseus’ proves himself as an epic hero through his clever thinking, fearless attitude, and prideful behavior.
Odysseus has never truly been alone in the Odyssey. Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus has always had Poseidon, Athena, and Hermes by his side. Whether their actions had a positive effect or not, they were always by his side. He had many other gods and goddesses that pushed him along the way but, these three really had a huge impact on his journey.
Odysseus was sound asleep in the woods only to be awakened after hearing the sound of girls shouting. The girls were kicking around a ball when they woke Odysseus as they were waiting for the river-washed clothes to dry in the sun. Fate was taking place to connect the exhausted traveler with a princess, Nausikaa. The night before, Athena visited Nausikaa in her dreams with intentions to influence her to go to the river to wash herself and her clothes for reason to be able to meet Odysseus. Once Odysseus gathered himself to go see what was around him, he comes out from behind the bushes causing the maids accompanying Nausikaa to all scatter at the sight of him. He is compared to a calm mountain lion that looks to be roughened by his hardships,
One of the challenges Odysseus faces on his journey back to Ithaca is the land of the Lotus Eaters. The Lotus Eaters showing “no will to do us harm” (489) offers Odysseus and his men a sweet honeyed plant. Who ever ate the Lotus became “forgetful of their homeland” (489) and “longed to stay forever” (489). Odysseus and his men need to overcome the temptations of staying there eating Lotus any time they want. They have to fight the internal battle of giving in to the sweet honeyed plant and instead they need to stay strong and support each other. Seeing his men losing desire to return home because of this dangerous honeyed plant, Odysseus knows he has to do something fast before all hope of returning to Ithaca is lost. Taking action into his

Odysseus is the king of Ithaca and is sent to Troy to fight the Trojans. He is at war for 10 years. After the war was over he was very arrogant. As a result, the gods send Odysseus to a hero’s journey to teach him a lesson. In the epic poem The Odyssey, written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, the hero Odysseus uses his wits and strength of character to make it home after a twenty year absence.
One mortal man going under a lot of change can be the savior of the world. Odysseus goes through a lot of change throughout these adventures. He has many attributes that make him the dynamic character he is. His self control is key in the book and gets him what he needs without having to go out of his way. The charming side of him saves many people throughout the book and gets a few girls loving him.
Does Odysseus’s journey back home worthy, leaving companions behind? As Odysseus comes back home from the battle of the Trojan War, he disguises as a beggar, which he thinks Penelope would not recognize and to see if anyone is still on his side. This seduces Penelope to run tests on Odysseus to see if it really is him. To see if Odysseus has returned, Penelope demonstrates her cleverness through three methods: an interrogation, a challenge, and a secret.
Odysseus is on an adventurous journey home. Due to the gods being angered by the Battle of Troy, they send hardships to Odysseus and his men on his way home to Ithaca. He faces gods, goddesses, and monsters like the cyclops, Aeolus, Athena, and many more. Odysseus’ men fall, but he survives to retake his kingdom and his wife.
An epic is a poem about a hero’s journey and how a hero becomes a hero. Some heroic qualities include have courage, being and leader, being brave, having patience, and being wise. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus will become a hero. He starts out with a big head and with many flaws but by the end he will become a wiser less flawed man.
