The Odyssey provides many instances of leadership shown in the main character, Odysseus. The epic written by Homer follows the twenty year quest of Odysseus as he tries to find his way home, running into many mythological Greek characters along the way. Odysseus is illustrated as a bad leader as he leads his men on something of a wild goose chase through ancient Greece. Odysseus repeatedly puts his men in the grip of death while on their way home. After escaping the Cyclops, in whom’s cave many men were eaten alive, he shouts back from his ship, “‘How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? Eater of guests under your roof! Zeus and the gods have paid you!’” (The Cyclops. 478-480). His statement angers the Cyclops, causing
Odysseus was an effective leader for many reasons. one example was when Odyssey use his mind to get his men’s out of hades. one example was when he help his mans get to safety. he was an Effective leaders and in this part of the story,Odysseus men were scared of of the Hades, and they did not think Odysseus would make it back,so he told them not to worry, i will make it back and he tells them to leave if he doesn’t make it back to the ship. another example was when Odysseus and his men were stock in cave with the one eye monster.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus is an amazing leader because, time after time, get his men out of difficult situations. For example, Odysseus gets his men out of a difficult situation on the island of cyclops. He does this by blinding the eye of the cyclops, then riding out on the sheep when they get let out, saving most of his men. He felt the urge to get his men out because they were getting eaten. He is a good leader because he cares for his men and gets them out of difficult situations. Odysseus also saves his men when they are with Circe. She turns half of them into pigs, so to keep the other half human, he slept with her. So she let them stay safe with her for a year because of Odysseus. He saves his men once again by doing this. Some
Being a good leader can take time and effort and although mistakes are involved one must keep going. Odysseus went through the struggle of becoming a good leader throughout his journey but he showed his good leadership through his thought out plans, quick decision making, and compassion towards his crew. The first way Odysseus showed his good leadership was with his well thought out plans. In book IX, line 377-393 Odysseus decided to get the cyclops drunk. He decides that if the cyclops is drunk and not in the right state of mind it will help with the rest of his plan. He wants the cyclops to be weak so when he stabs him, he will have a lessening reaction. Also in book IX, lines 397-398 Odysseus lies about his name. This may seem silly but when Odysseus and his men stab him in the eye he screams out to the other cyclops.
In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is a bad example of a leader. First, Odysseus is not disciplined enough to discipline his crew even if not punishing them will cause them to ignore his orders again. For example, in the Epic of Aeolus, Odysseus asks Aeolus to put all the storms into a bag, “...curious and suspicious the sailors open the bag, thinking it contains treasure… hurricanes blow the ships back to Aeolus.”[Page 673; Line 535] This quote shows his crew not adhering to Odysseus’s orders to not open the bag. After, this happens he does not punish them instead he moves on. This shows him not wanting to control his crew instead let them do what they want. Doing so causes them to be more mutinous and ignorant towards Odysseus in the future. Odysseus does not show good leadership qualities because he himself if not strong enough to get on to his crewmates and tell them what's what.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus is an amazing leader. However, he wasn’t always a prodigious leader. He had to spend 20 years at sea and in unexplored lands. Because of his actions, he stirred up anger in Poseidon and in return, Poseidon cursed Odysseus and all that assist him. Though Odysseus is now a great leader, he wasn’t always the best he could be.
Everyone is capable of being affectionate, positive, kind, and caring. But with those qualities comes pride, envy, greed, and wrath. The Odyssey is a myth formed about the absurd journey of the human, Odysseus. As a hero from the Trojan War, his mission was to bring his men back home after ten years of hardship. Little did he know, only half of his expedition was over. Odysseus faced off against the burly Laestrygonians, the atrocious Scylla, and the desperate Calypso. He had many peaks and valleys throughout his journey, solely caused by his positive and negative qualities as a leader. In the story of the “Odyssey,” the hero Odysseus embodies an ineffective and effective leader. Odysseus is strategic in navigating the obstacles he faces, however, he is selfish in his desires, and his ego prompts failure, which demonstrates to the reader the Greek
Leadership. It is a trait that is valued in almost any form of society. Whether it be leadership in the workplace or leadership on the battlefield, leadership is a prized capability for people. But, according to Colin Powell, this valued leadership trait can be lost at the hands of the followers of that leader. If these followers no longer trust their leader with their problems, then that person is no longer their leader. And, this statement does have some validity. While the raw talents of a leader are valuable to a group, ultimately, the success of the leader is contingent on whether or not the leader acknowledges and includes his followers. Therefore, Powell’s point is agreeable to a large extent, as it is imperative that the followers not only
The Vanities of Life A man once said that what happens in the lives of his family, friends, and colleagues, is of no concern to him. He could not care less to engage and assist. Is that the sound of a loving leader, one who works in the best interests of those around him? It is not, nonetheless, that Odysseus was just as aloof and careless as the man. Translated and published in 1961 by Robert Fitzgerald, Homer’s collection of epic poetry, The Odyssey, depicts the story of a supposed hero and the trials and tribulations encountered on his journey home.
In Homer's The Odyssey Odysseus can be seen as a terrible leader. This point can be very easily seen from the many fails of his pirating career. One may also see him as a very strong and good leader, but what are the major points for this belief? For example, one episode that his good leadership is shown is when Odysseus saves his men from complete destruction on the Cyclopes island. He helped his men escape from the cannibal ways of Polyphemus by tying them to the underside of goats, "and with that threat he let my ram go free outside." (9.515). Odysseus even gets his men out to their ship safely, ". . . and a welcome sight we were to loyal comrades- we who'd escaped our deaths." (9.520-521). Another episodic example is when Odysseus helped
“If Zeus is willing, we may hit Odysseus, Carry off the glory!” (22.265-266). I don’t want give what’s happening away but... In the poem The Odyssey translated by Homer, Odysseus the protagonist is trying to get back home after the great war of Troy, and to see his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus. But first he must be a good leader and get himself and his crew home.
After reading about Odysseus in the first part of The Odyssey he may seem like a good leader. Nobody had thought that deeper in the epic Odysseus’ actions made him turn out to be a bad leader. Homer’s epic The Odyssey is about how Odysseus and his men are journeying back home to Ithaca from the Trojan War. He encountered many obstacles along his journey that cost him the lives of his men. Odysseus faced atrocious monsters, foxy nymphs, and gods out for revenge. The journey that he completed tested his skills not only as leader, but as a human too. Odysseus proves himself to be a bad leader due to him being deceitful, oppressive, and dramatic.
One hundred eyes are staring at someone, judging their every move. They cannot give too many orders, but they also have to show authority. Trying to find this balance is what makes some people leaders, and others followers. In Homer's epic, The Odyssey, the reader follows the character, Odysseus, through his struggles to get home. While reading this epic, some may say he is a brave and selfless leader. Most will say he is actually careless, and unthoughtful in his decision making. Odysseus is a careless leader, one who only looks after himself and does not care about others feelings, even his own family members.
I believe Odysseus learns about leadership throughout the book continually however, I think particularly in book 9 when he faces the Polyphemus' cave is a great example of his leadership. After Odysseus and his men sail through the night they cross until the mainland where they instantly come upon a cave full of sheep and crates of milk and cheese. Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon, returns and at first shows great hospitality, but some turns hostile. He becomes hungry and eats two of Odysseus' men and decides to imprison the rest in his cave for future meals.
“The art of leadership is saying no, and not saying yes”(Tony Blair). In the Odyssey, Odysseus is the captain of a large fleet trying to get back to their home, Ithaca. Odysseus, with his crew, had to go through many obstacles to return to Ithaca. Odysseus was a bad leader because he was selfish, arrogant, and couldn’t control his men.
In the epic poem The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus is a good leader because his men put their faith and loyalty in him and Odysseus can use his wits to get his men out of deadly crises.
