How Is Odysseus Coming Home

In the novel The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus ventures on a life-changing journey where he comes to realize the things and people that make his life so special. The people who are loyal to Odysseus, including Penelope, Eumaeus, and Eurycleia, always believe he is coming home, and they never stop thinking about him. Their actions show their commitment to him throughout his journey, which they maintain no matter which hardships arise in their own lives. Through the loyalty of those who waited for Odysseus, he is able to maintain a place in the community, and complete his odyssey.

Odysseus is in disguise in Book 19 when he gets his feet washed by Eurycleia. She notices a scar that he got when he was younger, calls him a dear child, and states that “[she] did not know [him] until [she] laid [her] hands on [her] master’s body.” (19.520-521) After all of these years, Eurycleia remembers Odysseus and is the only one in the house to recognize him. She has always cared about him since he was a baby, clearly being tied to him throughout his entire life. Afterwards, Eurycleia wants to go tell Penelope that she has found Odysseus, but Odysseus tells her that she has to keep it a secret. Eurycleia reassures Odysseus by saying that “[He] [knows] What [she’s made of. [He] [knows] [She] won’t break.” (19.540) After spending the last 20 years close to Penelope and raising Telemachus, it would be expected that Eurycleia would rush to tell them what she knows, but she does not because she chooses his wishes over theirs. Subsequently, Eurycleia violates the trust of her coworkers in favor of Odysseus when she says “[She’ll] list for [him] all the women in the house and those who dishonor [him] and those who are true.” (19.544-545), Eurycleia maintains her loyalty to Odysseus by pointing out who is loyal to him and who is not when he was gone in order to make the house more peaceful for him.
