In the Odyssey Odysseus demonstrates his intelligence as he is striving to get home. For example when he went to cyclops land with his crew. “where did you leave your ship? Far down the coast, or close? I’d like to know” (9.272-273). “My ship Poseidon smashed it to pieces against the rocks he border of your land” (9.275-276). He was smart to say that it was destroyed but it really wasn’t and now the cyclops won’t destroy it. It was also smart not to tell him because now they have a way to get home. Another example of Odysseus intelligence was when he told the Cyclops a fake name when he asked for it, “They call me Noman my mother, my father, and all my friends, too.” (364-365) he told him that his name was Noman so that Odysseus plan would
The wanderings of Odysseus that were told to King Alkinoos in books IX to XII in the epic poem The Odyssey, help reveal that Odysseus is clever, easily tempted and not trustworthy. Odysseus and all of his men were trapped in the cave of Polyphemus and there was no way out. So, Odysseus came up with the clever plan of drugging the Cyclops with the gift of wine, which caused him to pass out, but before the giant Cyclops passed out, he asked for Odysseus’ name. Being the clever man he is, Odysseus told him that his “name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohdy” (9.397-398) .Odysseus then took action and got help from his men to sharpen and smooth a wooden stake. Then Odysseus “hewed again to make a stake with a pointed end”
Odysseus is also a hero who has the intellect to get through precarious situations. Again, in book 9, Odysseus calls himself “Nohbdy” to trick the Cyclops into yelling that name when calling for help. This is supported by the quotes, “My name is Nohbdy'', and, “Nohbdy, Nohbdy’s tricked me, Nohbdy’s ruined me!” (9.274 and 9.317). This shows that Odysseus is superior in intellect and can even think ahead to outsmart his opponents.
Confucius once said, “By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.” Confucius explains three ways to acquire wisdom : by reflection, imitation, and experience. This quote can be connected to Homer’s, The Odyssey, where Odysseus uses his experience to gain wisdom. In the beginning of The Odyssey, Odysseus, a champion and king, is called to adventure. Odysseus must embark on a new journey in order to return to Ithaca and retake his throne. During his travels, he faces many obstacles that prolong his homecoming but in return he gains permanent
Odysseus is intelligent. For example, Odysseus uses a strategy to make sure he doesn’t get lured by the sirens. He tells the crew, “Therefore you are to tie me up tight as a splint, erect along the mast, lashed to the mast” (12. 24-27). This shows that Odysseus rescued the sailors and himself from an obstacle that had the potential of not only ending their journey
Written by Homer, The Odyssey tells of a journey about a hero named Odysseus, who is desperately trying to return home to Ithaca after being forced to go to war. After being gone for 20 years, Odysseus arrives home with countless suitors attempting to marry his wife Penelope. On his journey, he goes through various encounters. During these encounters, he displays several qualities of a hero. For instance, Odysseus’ intelligence, cleverness, human weakness, and braveness make him a hero.
Determination can lead people to achieve their goals. It drives actions and leads to overall success. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus is determined to return home to Ithica despite the many challenges he faces along the way. He uses his motive to accomplish tasks and complete his journey. Odysseus’ determination has the most significant because it leads to hero back home to his family.
Odysseus is smart, for example, when he seen the cyclopes he didn't know what to do and then he thought about it and he had an idea which was to get the cyclopes drunk. Odysseus attempted to kill the cyclopes but he didn’t kill him all the way. He gave the cyclopes wine and waited until he passed out he then sharpened a stick and positioned his men in their places. He motioned them into action
During the story of The Odyssey by Homer, the protagonist Odysseus got stuck in a lot of sticky situations on his journey of delivering his men back home. Odysseus was able to escape many life-threatening events, which makes him a leader to his people. One of the many foes that was encountered was the cyclops, in which Odysseus risked his life by lying to it. “My ship? Poseidon Lord, who sets the earth a-tremble broke it up on the rocks at your lands end (Homer, 959).” Although a small number of men were lost to the hungry stomach of the beast, Odysseus used his intelligence to outwit the cyclops and rescue him and his stranded people. To wait for the perfect time to strike at the cyclops took a lot of patience, and shows how dedicated he
One major aspect the two share, is their intellectual gifts. Although Telemachus is not as gifted as Odysseus, he has made it along his journey growing up alongside other great warriors such as Menelaus, and the wisdom of his mother Penelope. The two first share their thoughts for their plan against the suitors. Telemachus feared their odds, “Father I know your great reputation- but two men cannot fight such odds” (Book XV1 255-260) When Telemachus says this he shows that he does not have Odysseus’s immense courage and does not trust his combat ability enough to take on sixty men by himself, as the odds suggest he must. But Odysseus would rather lose his own head fighting nobly for what he believes in and loves most, his honor, his home, and
How would you feel if you had to leave someone you love and you had to go on a long trip with many dangers and quests? Odysseus has to go through all that in the Odyssey by homer. In this book is a series of pomes of challenges a man name Odysseus must face to try to get home. Odysseus has to face challenges going to a Cyclopes home, a women name Circe, and a giant beast name Scylla. But when a person is trying to achieve something the outcome might not always satisfy the person.
Odysseus is the main character in an epic poem called the Odyssey. In the poem Odysseus has had some bad luck getting home, with some of the gods helping him and some hindering him; his journey towards home is a constant struggle. In this poem we see a man being broke and rebuilt, through constant irony his faith was damaged and without the help of Athena he probably would have given up on his journey. Through his hard work and wise spirit he finally does achieve his goal.
Odysseus and I illustrate intelligence in a variety of ways. For instance, Odysseus comes up with a plan to escape the island of the cyclopes and the cyclops saying, “I tied them silently together… then slung men under the middle of each [sheep]” (908). This is during a fight where Odysseus, the hero, has to come up with a plan to escape, the cyclops, or he will die; He thought fast and came up with a plan that worked. Another time Odysseus revealed great sense was when he listened to the advice of Circe to survive Scylla and Charybdis, sea monsters, that stated, “Hug the cliff of Scylla… take your ship through on a racing stroke” (930). This is when Odysseus and his crew were about to go by Scylla and Charybdis; Odysseus knew that if he didn’t
One of the major themes of Homer’s Odyssey is the importance of cunning over strength. This also happens to be the case with Odysseus and his long ten year journey home from fighting in Troy. Odysseus uses his intelligence over strength to ‘fight’ through tough times and bring himself home to Ithaca. Odysseus uses his intelligence when he has his men tie him down while passing the Sirens, so he himself will be able to hear their beautiful song, but not be entranced by their singing. He also uses cunning to escape from the Cyclops’ cave without being harmed. He then uses his cunning by storing away all of the armory, shields, and knives from the suitors so he is able to kill them easily.
What exactly are your weaknesses? What thing or trait sets you back in situations? Don’t exactly know yet? In fact, most people tend to not even be alert to where they lack of-of strength. In the Odyssey, one of the most well known and high ranked ancient greek poems by Homer shares the story of Odysseus.
Odysseus expressed wisdom most often. On page 559 it said, “He devised a scheme in which the Greeks left a wooden horse outside the walls of Troy and trick the Trojans into taking it inside” (Homer 559). He showed wisdom because, Odysseus helped his men think of an idea to tricked their enemy and not get caught. Again whenever his men were in desperate need Odysseus always had a plan. Continuing to page 565, Odysseus expressed wisdom saying,“We beached there and I told my crew to stand by and keep watch as myself I took twelve of my best fighters and went ahead”(Homer 565 ). This showed wisdom because Odysseus one, had a plan instead of all his men and two put everyone in order. Also he took his best fighters and went on the island to explore. These two examples expressed one of Odysseus epic hero traits.
