Ashlyn Watkins Professor Cherry Comp 2 The novel, Of Mice and Men, portrays the need for friendship and belonging. Steinbeck writes about the era of the Great Depression and how two men, Lennie and George, work together through their tough times through life. Lennie has cognitive delays and George feels a deep sense of responsibility toward him while caring for him much like a brother. They have gone from place to place to find work while keeping a close bond between each other. The place they stumble on seems to be a good fit until the need for companionship, belonging, and love takes place and begins to create problems.

The friendship between George and Lennie had many significant things about it. They share much of a special bond because of everything that they have been through together and continued to go through. George and Lennie would look out for each other. During the great depression for the most, it was every man for themselves, people were just trying to make money and just be able to provide for there family. They really did not care about other people just getting work for themselves. The two men are completely different, one being a retarded fellow (Lennie), and the other, a typical ranch hand(George) who travels with him. A good friendship is needed to survive through tough times. Lennie respects George because George gives him comfort. Also how Steinbeck portrays friendship in this novel. What I think this book is about is having life long friends and, is it always the way to go even if you have to do something so bad I will end the friendship.

Do you ever fight with your longtime best friend over something huge, and end up losing them in the aftermath? George and Lennie have been traveling with each other for a long time, but as they are on the verge of their dream Lennie goes and messes it up, which causes George to have to do something he never wanted to do. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, it has a common theme of friendship. Friendship is what carries people throughout their lives, and without it life could be very hard. First, Steinbeck describes how important friendship is to people. When George and Lennie first go to the ranch, George tells Lennie that they’ve “‘got a future’” and they don’t have to “‘sit in no bar room,’” (Steinbeck 14) because they have each other. Steinbeck uses this dialogue between George and Lennie to hint that taking care of Lennie gives him more purpose by having him mention that guys that go around alone tend to end up in bars without any real purpose. However, since George has Lennie, he has more responsibility, and therefore has more important things to do than to go into town to a bar. Later on in the novel, Crooks explains to Lennie that “‘a guy needs somebody to be near him,’” because if he doesn’t, “‘a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick,’” (Steinbeck 72). In the book, “Of Mice and Men”, John Steinbeck stated many things to prove the main idea. Throughout the book, John Steinbeck shows the difficulties that George and Lennie have to deal with. He states on how they are different, their problems and what keeps their relationship stable. Friendships may be difficult and put you out from the rest, but it has it’s values.

In the book “Of Mice and Men” the two main characters Lennie and George are just simple men trying to find work during the American Great Depression, They encounter many challenges on their adventure, but through it all both main characters remain true friends. This is why I feel that Lennie and George have true friendship. The first example of George and Lennie's true friendship is the loyalty and trust that George and Lennie share. George and Lennie live in a time when there wasn’t a great deal of money going around. They catch a break and get a job on a ranch.

In the world there are different types of friendship. There are good friends and bad friends, and it’s not always easy to decipher which ones are which. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men we see two ranch workers, George and Lennie, who have a peculiar type of friendship. They live their life day by, moving through different towns with an unlikely dream of owning a farmhouse ahead of them. George and Lennie have been friends for a long time, ever since George felt guilty of bullying a vulnerable Lennie, who unfortunately is not all there. George has been taking care of Lennie for such a long time, he was not just a friend to Lennie, but a very good one.

In the novella “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, there are two guys named George and Lennie. They were friends for a very long time and stood by each other. Some people may argue that George was a bad friend to Lennie but I believe that he was a good friend. Friends aren’t perfect, they will mess up. Just because George messed up and made questionable actions towards Lennie, that doesn’t make him a bad friend. You will not find a friend that has never done wrong by you.

Both Lennie and George would be nothing without each other. Steinbeck clearly shows how important friends are and how they can support and help you in a number of different ways. Lennie needs George for basic survival and without him, Lennie’s life would not be very long. George on the other hand, needs Lennie for a purpose in life. The conclusion of the novel Of Mice and Men illustrates what life would be like for George and Lennie without the other.

This is important because it shows that George wants to be alone but does not truly want to be lonely. Lennie is George’s responsibility. George views Lennie as a brother, friend, and partner in crime. Without Lennie, George is lonely but he knows that he saves Lennie from his own personal misery in the end. George knows he needs Lennie just as much as Lennie needs him. He needs his friendship and is lonely after he takes that friendship away from himself.
