Of Mice and Men Importance of Friendship George and Lennie

George was a good friend to Lennie because he cares for him. Lennie’s aunt died a while back and George promised her that he would take care of Lennie no matter what. George was not forced to watch over Lennie, he made a choice and stuck with it. Also, Lennie was holding a dead mouse and he was petting it. George saw and threw it across the pool. (page 6) He did that so Lennie wouldn’t get sick or a disease. Finally, George and Lennie went to work on a farm and there was a woman. She was a man named Curley’s wife. George had heard that she was trouble and told Lennie to stay away from her so that he wouldn’t get hurt.

A good friendship is needed to survive through tough times. Lennie respects George because George gives him comfort. George cares for Lennie so much that he considers him to be part of his family: “George said, he’s my cousin. I told his old lady id take care of him. He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid” (Steinbeck 22). Aside from comfort and advice, Lennie also needs George because when he gets in trouble, George always manages to find a way to help him get out of it. In the world there are different types of friendship. There are good friends and bad friends, and it’s not always easy to decipher which ones are which. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men we see two ranch workers, George and Lennie, who have a peculiar type of friendship. They live their life day by, moving through different towns with an unlikely dream of owning a farmhouse ahead of them. George and Lennie have been friends for a long time, ever since George felt guilty of bullying a vulnerable Lennie, who unfortunately is not all there. George has been taking care of Lennie for such a long time, he was not just a friend to Lennie, but a very good one.

Throughout the book, “Of Mice and Men”,George and Lennie have faced many difficulties and problems. But they never quite gave up on each other. In the book, “Of Mice and Men”, John Steinbeck stated many things to prove the main idea. Throughout the book, John Steinbeck shows the difficulties that George and Lennie have to deal with. He states on how they are different, their problems and what keeps their relationship stable. Friendships may be difficult and put you out from the rest, but it has it’s values.

Both Lennie and George would be nothing without each other. Steinbeck clearly shows how important friends are and how they can support and help you in a number of different ways. Lennie needs George for basic survival and without him, Lennie’s life would not be very long. George on the other hand, needs Lennie for a purpose in life. The conclusion of the novel Of Mice and Men illustrates what life would be like for George and Lennie without the other.

John Steinbeck shows that George and Lennie have a true friendship be them taking care of each other by stating, “If you don’ want me I can go off in the hills an’ find a cave. I can go away any time. No – look! I was jus’ foolin’” (Steinbeck 12). This quote shows that George and Lennie share the true meaning of friendship by taking care of each other. George tells Lennie to stay with him and not to run of because Lennie can’t care for himself. Another quote that shows George and Lennie support one another is when the narrator states, “… I musta lost it… You never had none you crazy bastard” (Steinbeck 5). First, before heading out to the ranch Lennie was about to run out of George's site but George told him “No, you stay with me. Your Aunt Clara wouldn't like you're running off by yourself.” (Steinbeck 13). This quote demonstrates a great relationship because it shows how George is looking out for Lennie and making sure that he did the right thing by staying back. Once again George shows the qualities of a good relationship is shown once again in the novel when George was about to get a job he demanded to Lennie and said “You ain’t gonna say a word. “You jus’ stand there and don't say nothing. If he finds out what a crazy bastard you are, we won't get no job.” (13). The quote from the Novel shows more of how George and Lennie realize that their relationship is held up by being able to make good decisions and listen to each other.Lastly George is making sure that he is sticking with him and not going off on his own because he knows that is the best thing for Lennie and he knows that Aunt Clara wants Lennie to be safe as well. “George said, I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebody'd shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourself. No, you stay with me. Crook’s for example he is a black stable buck, no one wants to hang out with him because he is black and when Lennie comes in his room and starts talking he don’t mind it because he’s lonely, and nobody knows what that does to a guy. So many of these guy’s don’t have nobody to care for them but it’s different with George and Lennie, they have a bond that nobody can break.

George and Lennie have a strong bond of friendship that makes them both feel like they are actually somebody. For example, “ ‘I been mean ain’t I?’ ‘If you don’t want me I can go off in the hills an’ find a cave. I can go away any time.’ ‘No—look! I was jus’ foolin, Lennie, cause I want you to stay with me.’” (p.14) This shows that George actually wants Lennie to be thought of as one of his friends, not as a doll that he can just kick around. The quote also shows that George cares for Lennie tremendously and really understands how Lennie feels. Secondly, Lennie feels the same way back at George “But not us! An’ why? Because…. Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.” (p.15). This is a good example
