While watching O.J. Simpson: Made in America, the documentary brought up many important issues that we faced and are still currently facing today in the U.S. The trial was dominantly based on race. O.J. Simpson was found not guilty, which surprised many people, but also made other people rejoice in that fact. During this time, there was a race war occurrence and many African American people in Los Angeles were furious with the Los Angeles police department. There was police brutality towards the African American people in Los Angeles and there was much anger on both sides. Since the beating of a young African American man named Rodney King, among many others, the African American community was infuriated at this point with the Los Angeles Police Department. They treated many African American’s poorly and they were judged for that. Relating back to the O.J. Simpson ordeal, he did not identify himself as an African American until being identified as such was in his favor. He wanted to be known as “just O.J.” He did not see race as a distinguishing factor. When he was accused of murdering Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman, he and his lawyers used race as the presiding factor to win this case. Even though there was much evidence against Simpson, the criminal justice system’s verdict was determined by the jury and O.J. Simpson’s dream team.
