Olafson's Ability To Be An Effective Team Leader

Jurgens originally believed that Olafson came from a strong background, in terms of credentials and work experience, and that he possessed considerable maturity and intelligence. However, Jurgens had concerns about Olafson’s lack of assertiveness to be a strong manager and leader. There are qualities that define a good leader as discussed in MGMT 460 and are expected by Jurgens. There are several cases that showcases Olafson’s lack of ability to be an effective team leader.
First, there were difficulties at St. Paul’s personnel practices when Olafson extended offers and increases for salary without prior approval from Beverly Hills which created problems and embarrassment. Second, Jurgens believed that Olafson lacked the level of enthusiasm …show more content…

Instead of making a promise for a raise without confirming with Beverly Hills, he should simply give praise to the team members as appropriate. He can write letters of commendation for good performance, recognize team members in meetings, etc. If he chooses to increase salaries still, he can recommend employees for corporate bonuses or allow team members to give briefings to upper management to increase their visibility. Providing feedback and giving credit to the team can build trust and motivate the team. Currently he is operating with too little help and direction that may be paralyzing, but if Olafson can find the right balance he can help his team reach maximize potential where they can solve problems and work effectively as a team.
Improvement Seven: Create an Environment for the Team to be Effective As a team leader, Olafson needs to build an environment where his team can operate effectively. For continuity, it is important to create and sustain a teamwork environment that helps the team operate at maximum potential. An effort must be made to shape a teamwork oriented environment outlined in the steps below:
