The comparison between Revelers and Mer-ib and his wife in their chambers of sacrifice depicts the contrast between the conventionalized style of Egypt and the advances toward realism by the Greeks, primarily in the representation of the human form. Greek art from the archaic period is distinguished by artistic development and a growing interest in the body and how to realistically depict it. While, the Egyptian old kingdom art is stylistically determined by conventions that are used by almost all of Egypt, except the Amarna period. These conventions convey the human body with reference to established rules rather than what is observed. When first looking at the two pieces, the contrast between the depictions of the human form is most evident
The main purpose of this paper is to describe the visual analysis of the artwork. This paper examines an Egyptian half nude portrait art which is taken from Metropolitan Museum of Art (Fig.1). The statue characterized both male and female seated figure with a Braid hair. In this essay, I will present a complete visual description of this artwork (its preservation, costume and iconography), and then I will compare it to another artwork which is chosen from Textbook that is Akhenaten and his Family (Fig. 2).
Greek art took many ideas from Egypt and Mesopotamia however as the years passed they started to develop and create their own unique style. This style was more realistic and natural visually. One of their goals was for the viewer to believe they are seeing a moment standing still in time. You can see this when you compare Kroisos from, Anavysos Greece, and Doryphorus from Pompeii, Italy. These pieces are roughly dated 80 years apart however the difference between the two-forms are so remarkable. This paper will be discussing and addressing the evolution of a more naturalistic art form, from the statue of Kroisos compared to the statue of Doryphorus during the Greek art period. At a first glance of the statues you may not see the dramatic differences between the two however they were both approached in different ways to be created. They have different meanings yet both were created to be more naturalistic than what came before it.
The contrast between the personification
1. There are numerous instances of the Etruscan artists taking their cue from Greek artists. The tendency was so prevalent that at one time historians considered Etruscan art as wholly derivative. The Etruscans did copy a lot of Greek art in both technique and design. One of those instances is in their construction of their temples. There is a definite similarity in both technique and design. The Etruscans incorporated columns in their temples long after the Greeks started doing so, and the similarities did not end there. There were sculptures and paintings inside the temples that were patently Greek in design. The Etruscans traded with Greece and attacked it several times, so there were several points of interaction and copying.
This first act as king brought with him a shocking speculation and hostility between his throne and the priesthood of Amun. Inside the temple was an entirely new style of art, which was often described, as “naturalistic” in Akhenaten’s portrayal of the human body. No longer was the Pharaoh portrayed as half animal with the perfect body fitted for the afterlife. Akhenaten and the royal family were shown with long toes, massive hips, extremely long fingers, skinny torso, ample breasts, big buttocks, and an elongated face. This exaggeration of the royal family’s bodies altered classic Egyptian art and became better known as Amarna Art.
When analyzing the artwork one can see the influence of what we now understand to be art form, through the numerous art elements the painting of Queen Nefertari and Isis has. Starting with lines, the artist uses many types of both regular and irregular, to create the hieroglyphics and the shape of the women along with what they wear. The ancient Egyptians liked to have things in order and consistent. We see the proof for this behind their canon of proportions method. In order to make complex figures easier to depict, the traditional style and trademark of ancient Egyptian artworks show everything drawn or carved to be two-dimensional in shape. However, they also wanted to show the aspects they valued the most as a society. Amenhotep III was a pharaoh of ancient Egypt from around 1388 BC till about 1350 BC. During his rule of Egypt, was a period of unprecedented prosperity and artistic splendor (Wiki: Amenhotep III). The art from this time showed several gods that ancient Egyptians worshiped, such as Amun, Anubis, Aten, Ra, and many others. Most art was drawn in a way that most of the body parts were sized according to standard proportions, yet the poses were so rigid that they seem to have little sense of movement, if any at all. Many of these drawings were reliefs on walls and pottery. The art was known for its boldness and controlled vitality. Egyptians used art as a way to reflect every aspect of their lives. Sculptors were important artist, and in these different architectural sculptures, you will see how models of people and different figures were depicted in stone during the New Kingdom and Old Kingdom eras. Nikare with his Wife and Daughter is a statue that was made from limestone and paint in Egypt during the Old Kingdom era about 2420-2389 B.C or later. Stelophorous Statue of Bay made in 1294–1250 B.C is another sculpture that was also made from limestone about one thousand years apart from the other one. This statue was also made in Egypt. Both sculptures share some similarities to have been made a millennium apart, but with that also comes several differences. Although both statues as a whole may depict different things, it’s the little details in them that we don’t usually analyze in art that make them both similar.
This essay aims to investigate two different time periods in the history of art. It will scrutinize the influence that the respective societal contexts had on the different artists, which in turn, caused them to arrange the formal elements in a specific way. I will be examining an Egyptian sculpture of the god Isis nursing Horus, her son, as well as the Vladimir Virgin icon, which dates from the Byzantine era. Experts vary on the precise ‘lifetime’ of the Ancient Egyptian civilization, but according to Mason (2007:10) it existed from 3100 BCE up to 30 BCE. The Byzantine era, which
Egyptian and Archaic sculptures are similar in some ways, but at the same time they are very different. For differences, Egyptian sculptures have the base or rock connected to the entire body itself. In addition, there is no space in between their arms and everything on their body (stone) is connected. On the other hand, early Archaic has open spaces between the arms and their torso. To add, Egyptian sculptures overall had no sense of emotion shown on their faces, while Archaic sculptures had an archaic smile, indicating or symbolizing life.
Just from looking at a few pieces of the art of the ancient Egyptians, you begin to notice many defining characteristics about it that make it unique and different from other styles of art. There are an ample amount of recurring features in the art, so this must mean that these traits and aspects are noteworthy. This next section of the essay will go into detail about a few of the many types of art and the stylistic elements that define ancient Egyptian art and make it special and distinguishable from other types of art, and why some particular aspects of the art are important.
While most art styles differ in many ways there are no two art forms, in my opinion, that differ and contrast each other as much as Greek and early Christian art seem to. And so, today we will be comparing but mostly contrasting these two art forms from each other.
The project started out with a primary reflection on the male physique throughout time – and how ideals change and reflect their burden on men (primarily gay men) in present day society.
Over the years of art history, there are many great empires that we think of and two of those were ancient Greek and Egyptian. When talking about Greek and Egyptian art history, it is the sculptures that come to mind when you are comparing and contrasting artworks. Egyptian art and Greek art both had mesmerizing sculptures but Egyptian art was more oriented towards religion and Greek art was more focused on philosophy. The Egyptian statue of the Menkaure and a Queen was similar to the Greek statue of Metropolitan Kouros in their posture but both of these statues also had many differences. Menkaure and a queen statue was created from an unusual stone and the statue was discovered in Menkaure’s valley temple. The sculpture has a hard texture and because of the time-consuming task of polishing this sculpture was never completely polished. So, the sculpture is greywacke and has traces of red paint on king’s face, ears and neck because male figures were traditionally painted red and there are traces of black in queen’s hair. The sculpture itself is 54 ½ inches in height and is displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Metropolitan Kouros was created from marble which seems like it has a rough and hard texture. The statue is 6 feet in height and is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Imperial Roman art contains some of the most detailed and realistic aspects during the many Roman empires time. The style of this time period went back to and equivalent style of Greek art from the Classical and Hellenistic periods. In contrast to the Greeks, the Romans subject matter more focused on the ruler of the time. Imperial Rome’s first ruler being Augustus, who had many sculptures made in honor of him.
