A significant story could be more attractive to the reader. Author could use several writing techniques to contribute a larger and richer meaning of the stories. Allegory is one of the techniques that a story has a second meaning beneath the surface and has a deeper significance to inspire reader.. “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a short story that implies people customary watching the strange new things and may ignore the real spirit of the new things. This story is a type of fantasy, but with realism story to explore the human nature. In the story, a very old man with enormous wings fall into Pelayo and Elisenda’s county yard, terrify the whole town but attract them to look at this strange thing. The “Old man” was described as a homeless person with enormous wings that should not appear on human body. He is weak and needed help, but he cannot because of the strange appearance. He was called an “angel” by the neighbor woman, but he did not understand the language of God when father Gonzaga greet with him. In the story, Marquez writes, “Then [Father Gonzaga] noticed that seen close up he was much too human: he had an unbearable smell of the outdoors, the back side of his wings was strewn with parasites and his main feathers had been mistreated by terrestrial winds, and nothing about him measured up to the proud dignity of angels”(264). In this description of the “old man”, he was like the new immigration that is poor and homeless. He is really helpless but people seem to reject him, abandon him and take advantage of him as misjudge him. This shows that the townspeople are not willing to accept the sorehead new immigration in which reveals the townspeople are anti-foreign. He is a chance to encourage people to subvert their mediocrity and may increasing their labor
