“A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is a satirical piece because it mocks both the Catholic Church and human nature.
The author, Garcia Marquez, evaluates the church through Father Gonzaga and his superiors in Rome. They “showed no urgency” in learning the certainty about the old man. This jump to conclusion makes the church seem literal-minded and inattentive to others. After days of doing nothing but torture the old man and the church not doing anything about it, the old man flies off implying that the “wisdom” of the church was never really needed.
