In the journal article, it discusses two main topics that coincide with older adults’ activity level. The two main topics that play a role in older adults are physical activity and social cognitions. It explains that physical activity gives individuals the better opportunity to stay healthy across their lifespan. Many older adults’ physical activity decreases with age starting at about seventy five years old. A small percentage of older adults perform physical activity about thirty minutes or more moderate physical activity on the average of a week. The article states that older adults must be aware of self; which allows conscious self-reflection. It is important for older adults to have an understanding of social and cognitive aspects of health
The oldest group were much less likely than younger people to be exercising to keep fit, relieve stress/relax, keep in shape or lose weight but instead more likely to be taking part for enjoyment and social aspects or because it helps with an injury/disability
Yes, I agree with you that people are living much longer thanks to advances in technology and medicine. Thus, the older adults (I prefer to use the term older than elderly or geriatric), is one group of the population that Healthy People 2020 has assigned a separate topic of concern. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggested that any health promotion for the older adult has to take into consideration the psychosocial determinants of health. Given that older adults may not have the physical strength or stamina of the younger population, participation in physical activities should be encouraged (Healthy People 2020). If you don’t mind I would like to suggest that you include some kind of activity in your program
However, others argue that society prevents other people for maintaining major activity in older age which keeps them independent. For example, if the older person was to go to a care home when he or she is incapable to look after themselves in the health care settings encourage the activity theory by ensuring the services user(s) have activities to keep them motivated and interested in others around them throughout the day.
According to Ruoff, (2002); Brown, Kirkpatrick, Swanson & McKenzie, (2011), “Between 80% and 85% of the elderly living in nursing homes suffer from chronic pain disorders” ( As cited in Lombard, et al., 2015, p.1140). OM is a part of this percentage of elderly that has been living in pain for over ten years. In the first section of this paper, this author will be questioning OM about his perception of pain, and in the second part of this paper, personal reflections about the answers received will be given. This author will also do a detailed assessment of OM living condition and educate him on how to prevent fall by keeping his environment safe.
Groups seem to be effective for all ages. Discuss specific ways that groups are beneficial to older clients.
One of the most important factors to keeping seniors healthy is exercise. A community exercise program would encourage exercise in this population. Initiating a senior community exercise program within a community would require a large amount interprofessional communication and collaboration. In addition, to have a successful community senior exercise program it would the involvement of several different disciplines. Important disciplines to have involved in this community exercise program would be a medical provider, nurses, therapist, and dietitian. Each of these disciplines has a different specialty that brings different knowledge to the table, which will help create a comprehensive exercise program. Similarly, the collaboration of each
A limitation of cross sectional studies is that the design is reliant on data which has been collected for other purposes and methods adopted cannot be controlled or changed. Studies analysed in this aimed to find methods of improving physical fitness and counteract inactivity with the use of pedometers and participants were selected via convenience and volunteer sampling (Proença et al, 2012, Zabatiero et al., 2013)).Thus participants who volunteered were most likely to have been physically active, have greater exercise capacity and thus more willing to take part than those who were less physically active. This contradicts this study as researchers are trying to find a full representation of different levels of physical activities and exercise capacity within the elderly population. This is a limitation as it does not provide full representation of elderly population and does not account for those who have been physically fit but less active. As a result, this study lacks internal and external validity as it has poor generalisability and participants are not fully representative of the general elderly
Young people in American society are at risk of not aging successfully. Due to the ease of access to unhealthy foods, low levels of physical activity, and generally unhealthy lifestyle choices, many Americans are not expected to age well. For example, the daily recommended amount of physical activity is 30 minutes of moderate activity, but with many American 's making the choice to watch television or choosing desk jobs with little to no physical activity the outlook for aging successful looks grim for many. In this literature review, the focus will be on answering the questions: what does it mean to age successfully and what happens to our bodies and minds as we age? Finding source material to answer these questions was difficult at times, but with vigilance, the answers were found.
An assessment of a person is used to focus not only on the areas an older adult may need support with, but also the areas where the older adult is functioning appropriately (McInnus-Dittrich, 2014). Using the strengths perspective in the assessment process as well has in the interventions helps older adults achieve their goals. (McInnus-Dittrich, 2014). The goal of an assessment is to establish what needs the older adult wants to meet as opposed to the goals the social worker envisions for the client (McInnus-Dittrich, 2014). This clinical assessment of Carl is going to examine the social history, physical, psychological, social, spiritual, financial, environmental, and legal assess as they apply to Carl, and assess the strengths he displayed
Assessing and planning care of the elderly is important in enabling the older adult to have the best quality of life in their later years. Understanding their views on living day to day with what they hold dear, will help in planning care for the older person. In this paper, I will interview an older adult and describe various details as well as cultural relations surrounding my interviewed individual. I will perform functional assessments using the Tinetti, Katz, Home Safety, and Barthel tools, which will be included in the Appendix. I will compare any age-related changes and identify more than six preliminary issues that need to be addressed. Lastly, I will propose more than three alterations and
It is now recognized that physical activity can be associated with the maintenance of cognitive function in older adults and offers some protection against Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive dysfunctions in older adults is becoming an urgent public health problem. However, there is a positive association between physical activity in young children that impacts cognitive health later in adults. The article states that a positive influence of physical activity on the cognitive functions of children is important for at least two reasons. One reason a potential argument for increasing PE without risk of decreasing academic progress. The other reason is that physical activity in school, like physical education class at an early age offers a way to reduce disruptive behavior and later will decrease the dropout rate. Furthermore, another important factor of increased physical education would be an enhanced level of physical
Leisure activities are an essential element of human life that there are a lot of studies have shown that older people engage in recreational activities and programs can help seniors to improve physical, mental health and enhance one’s life satisfaction. There a different type of activities, it can be individuals, groups, family or friends that communicate and participate with others. The elderly might have a positive effect, since there are interesting activities
Everyone grows up in a different way due to a variety of factors which means that everyone ages differently. Older adults tend to be more susceptible to diseases or illnesses, and they may become more dependent on others. Some older adults are capable of living their lives the way they always have, by staying healthy. The interview conducted with a 72-year old married woman reveals just that; she was born and raised in Minnesota, and she still lives here today. Sleeping is often an issue with old age, but she has come to manage it in a healthy way. She also enjoys her life with family and friends who support her; these factors help her remain enthusiastic and prevent her from falling into depression.
With increasing age, maintaining health and functional ability is essential for older adults to uphold their independence and quality of life for as long as possible (Chen, 2010). Some barriers that interfere with older adult’s involvement in the community includes decreased functional abilities, physical health problems and physical frailty, fear of injury or falling, architectural or environmental restrictions, and lack of transportation or finances (Stumbo, 2015). Physical health problems and frailty can inhibit participant’s ability to be active, therefore, making it difficult to participate in the community. The study by Chen (2010) reports physical health problems such as gout, arthritis, heart disease, Parkinson Disease, poor eyesight,
The purpose of our health fair event is to educate and encourage older adults to remain active in their daily lives. Physical health is beneficial throughout one’s entire lifespan. Incorporating regular exercise into your daily routine will prevent chronic disease, improves their overall mood, and lowers their chances of injury (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013, Chapter 5). As we go through the aging process, our bodies require us to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Moderate exercise is favorable for people of all ages. Elderly people living with chronic illnesses can also participate in moderate physical activity. Medical conditions, such as dementia, heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure can all be improved by including regular exercise into an individual’s routine (Chronic Illnesses, PowerPoint).
