The factors that shaped the modern Olympic movement from 1892 to 2002 are the ability to compete against each other peacefully in order to not invoke any more wars, another factor that played a major part in shaping the modern Olympic movement was equality, making the world more equal and accepting to not only all races but as well as accepting to women.
The modern Olympic movement was shaped by the friendly and peaceful competition going on around the world since countries did not want to invoke more war than had already happened. In document #1 the founder of the modern Olympic movement talked about how they were going to let their athletes speak for their country instead of battling and war. Meaning he wanted to be able to settle rivalries

Thus settling the disagreement and rivalry between Britain peacefully. The British speaker said those things the way he did because there was a rivalry between the Nazis and the British due to the recent events of World War 2, the Nazis had been defeated but the British still held grudges against the Nazis. So the reason that the British Olympian said what he did was due to a bias. In document #4 the speaker talks about how there was a lot of pressure on the American athletes to beat the Soviet Union this year due to past rivalries. The speaker talked about the pressure because he participated in the Olympics and was able to feel what it was like first hand, the reason the Americans and the Soviet Union had such a rivalry was due to the incidents in the cold war. The speaker in document #5 is the Mayor of Tokyo, he talks about how without the Olympics being hosted in Japan in 1972 they would not have been able to get back into the world trade market and had been labeled as a country with defeated-enemy syndrome. This helped them save their economy after World War 2 as well as it was a peaceful way to reconcile with America and the rest of …show more content…
Document #2 is a picture of a female British athlete who was able to participate in the Olympics. The document states that the 1908 games were held in Great Britain and 2% of the athletes were female. The Olympics had brought everyone together and as such made it so that females were able to participate, although only a few did participate it showed that the Olympics were the start of a new era of equality. In document #6 it talks about how due to the Soviet Union being peaceful they were able to host the Olympic games in Moscow 1980, this shows how the Olympics provided equal opportunities to everyone to not only host the games, as long as you had abided by the rules and not start wars, but as well as athletes of all kinds. In document #7 it talks about how 9 large corporations were selected as the top sponsors for the 1988 Olympics, it talks about how South Korea did not get on the list and put themselves out there in order to promote trade to a worldwide audience. Although this may seem like they were exploited but in fact it was extremely equal, it gave them an opportunity to get themselves out there and promote themselves rather than just giving the top sponsors to the big countries without even trying to take in smaller countries into consideration. In document #8 the speaker is a female competitor from Algeria. She talks about how her victories give her confidence
The Olympics have shown over the decades that they can be affected by political conflict. However, it seems that this is the point of the Olympics, to illustrate national pride, by competition. Bloodshed should not be the way for pride of one’s country to be shown, but it should be shown through competition, in the words of the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Pierre de
The greatest athletes of all time have their names set in stone. Every year a new star comes out of the shadows and becomes the focus of global interest. Nations back their athletes financially to ensure they receive a medal. Winning gold in the Olympics Games is seen as the highest honor an athlete can achieve because of its prestigious image. The Olympics have not always been about the athletes. Nations competing have been victims of political scandals. When one country goes against another country, some people do not only view it as a fight for gold, but as a war amongst nations. Soccer fields have become battlegrounds and players, soldiers. Swimming pools turn into bloodbaths, and tennis court nets as do territorial partitions. Since
In a nutshell, the Olympics have been massively affected over the time span from 1892 to 2002. Factors that enabled this metamorphosis to take place include: political tensions between countries, economic opportunities that arose, and the social impact through the endorsement of Women’s
The olympics were shaped due to social reasons. Document 1’s author, Pierre de Coubertin, who is the founder of the modern Olympics, is a reliable asset to pursuing ideal peace with many other countries. The reason why he wants peace is because he wants to have the “disappearance of war” to be “utopians” which shows that he believes that the olympics one of the best answers to his goal. Similarly, in document 6, the Soviet Union’s Olympic organizing Committee also want to take part with “peace, democracy, and social progress.” This shows how more and more countries, even those with bad ties with others,
Feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Document 2 relates to prompt because it shows how women fought for their rights and tried to prove that they were equal to men, and could do anything just as good as a man. Olympic athlete of the 1908 games held in Britain and women’s rights activist Sybil Newall was photographed by a British newspaper, shooting a bow and arrow. This document shows how little the amount of women were participating In the Olympic Games. Only 2% of Olympic competitors were women in 1908. In the photograph, Sybil Newall is seen wearing a tradition women’s dress that completely covered her up, not even showing an ankle. Sybil Newall was dressed this way because back in that time it was unacceptable by men for women to wear a revealing outfit and showing the slightest bit of skin. This shows how women were oppressed because they were forced to wear clothes that were very traditional. Women of that time were also denied the right to express themselves through fashion. In document to, feminism helped shape the modern Olympic movement because it shows that women were just as capable as competing alongside or against a man athletically. However, this
The present-day Olympics are more focused on individual athletes than nations. The media focuses more on the athletes’ achievements in terms of records broken, while the athletes’ focus on the monetary prizes to be won
Another reason that the Olympics has grown in popularity is the addition of festivals. “For the first time the Games featured a closing ceremony” (History.com Staff). There used to never be an opening ceremony but since the 1924 Games there has been one. Also, the 1936 Games in Berlin were the first to use the torch relay. The torch relay is where the athletes pass along the famous Olympic torch to each other. The final athlete will light a huge torch with the torch that has been lit in Athens. Ironically the Nazis were the first ones to come up with the idea and use it. The use of festivals becoming tradition helps to increase the popularity of the Olympics.
Things have changed tremendously since the ancient Greek Olympics. One example of this that in the ancient Greeks times there were only allowed for men to compete in the Olympic events and to watch. Now in the modern Olympics women are allowed to compete and watch the Olympic games. Another example of this is that no foreigners were allowed to compete in the Olympic games. In the modern Olympics there are more than 200 countries that compete in the Olympic games. Only fully Greek men could participate in the ancient Olympics. Now in the modern Olympics many races have and are competing in the games for future to come. The ancient Olympic games were always held in Olympia, Greece. Now in modern Olympics they are held in many different cities, many different countries, and many different continents. The last Olympic games were held in Rio, Brazil and the next Olympics are going to be held in Tokyo, Japan. The ancient Olympics were held every 4 years just like how we have it today. This custom was passed down from the ancient Greek Olympics. Another example of how the Olympics have changed over time is the awards that they give out. The top 3 winners in the modern Olympics receive a bronze medal for 3rd place, a silver medal for 2nd, and a gold medal for 1st place. They are awarded their medals on a podium that has 1st on the top, then 2nd a little bit lower, and then 3rd which is
Did you know that the Olympics were originally banished and it took 1,503 years for it to officially return? The modern Olympics as we know it today came from the ancient Olympic games that originated in Greece. These things are basically one event that has the same name but they both have very different aspects and core values to them. This is why I chose to compare both and show both sides, so that people may be able to see the evolution of the famous Olympic games.
Ever since 776 B.C, the Olympics have been held every four years and they contain lots of athletic events. Not only are the Olympics a time for people to enjoy watching and being part of, but back then, it is also politically important. The games helped federate the Greek Empire. In order to be in the Olympics, you were required to qualify and have your name inscribed in lists. Before you can compete in the Olympics, you have to train in your own country 10 months prior to the actual games.
From the above text it can be argued that the concept of Olympism does exist in the modern world and has a slightly different significance than the ancient Olympic games. The present philosophy revolves round the role of sport in the development of this world as it provides international understanding and establishes social and moral values (Girginove et al 2005). It has been understood that sporting events can act a medium that can bring nations together on a single platform. The ideology of liberalism and equality was further incorporated by De Coubertin who signifies the role of fairness, justice and respects for person which can be obtained through Olympics (Girginove et al 2005).
When the Olympic Games were founded in 776 BC their main aim was to promote peace and athletic excellence but over the past few years the spirit of Olympics has been hijacked by nationalism and commercialism.
Idea that they Olympics have wanted to achieve, was that men and woman are equal and are able to compete. This was finally achieved in London 2012. Where the same number of men and woman competing, first time that this has happened been mainly
The early Olympics had a huge impact on the Olympics today, good and bad. The early Olympics basically created the Olympics now. You can’t say really say what changed it because they changed things every year, so there was something different each year. This is good because you don’t want to be looking at the same games same people each year until they die or something. The Olympics is something that shows who is the best at what they do every 4 years. There will not be the same person every 4 years unless they are really grinding to be the best. In the early Olympics there are good changes and bad changes.
In the beginning of the Olympics , which was over 3,000 years ago it was created in the way of honoring the god Zeus.(history) The very first Olympic games didn’t happen until the 19th century which became the
