In the 2016 summer olympics, an expected 206 countries are going to participate. The modern olympics today are not the first olympics in history, for the olympics can be traced back before the common era. The ancient olympic games established a domino effect for many other events in history.

The Ancient Greeks were the first people to invent the olympic games. The events can be traced back as far as 776 B.C. That's about 1,970 years before the first modern olympic games! The ancient games were always held in Olympia, the reason is that it was a major religious center at that time. No one really knows who started the ancient games, but there have been many myths about the story behind them.. One myth is about a challenger of King Oinomaos, “One tale says King Oinomaos of Pisa would only allow a man who could beat him in a chariot race marry his daughter Hippodamia, but if the challenger lost, he would be beheaded. If the ancient greeks hadn’t come up with the idea, there wouldn’t be any Olympic games! The Ancient Olympics also influenced many of the modern events, for example, some of the Track and Field events were based off of the running marathons and discus throwing events, as well as the ancient long jump event. The marathon in the modern Olympics is based off the first event that was ever held in the ancient olympics, a 200 meter foot race. Even though the modern games were based off the greeks version, they have many differences. For example, the ancient games stayed in one place and only allowed greek men to compete, where the modern games move from place to place and allow men/women from all around the world to compete.
