On July 28, 1914 World War I commenced, putting the Allies against the Central powers. Altogether there was thirty-two countries involved in the war. Countries such as Britain, France, Russia, and the United States were pinned against countries such as Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Although there was a multitude of reasons that World War I erupted, the historic ‘beginning’ of this war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Despite this, The United States of America was said to join the fight when Germany attempted to make alliance with Mexico to spite America. Once the United States caught word of this through the interception of the Zimmerman telegraph, they entered into the war on the Allies side.…show more content…
Before addressing the manner in which trench warfare greatly affected World War I, it is imperative to adequately describe what this tactic is. Trench warfare, quite literally, is when armies would dig trenches into the ground as a station for their armed forced. Likewise, the enemy would also have trenches dug nearby. In general, this type of warfare was described as a way of fighting from a ‘permanent’ area: “Trench warfare, warfare in which opposing armed forces attack, counterattack, and defend from relatively permanent systems of trenches dug into the ground. The opposing systems of trenches are usually close to one another. Trench warfare is resorted to when the superior firepower of the defense compels the opposing forces to “dig in” so extensively as to sacrifice their mobility in order to gain protection” (“Trench Warfare”) These trenches allowed for soldiers to be able to stand tall and shoot at enemies with their bodies well protected. Despite the fact that these seem quite safe for soldiers, if an enemy was to throw a bomb into the trench, everyone would be in grave danger as there is virtually no escaping its’ blast. Also, before fully discussing the manner in which trench warfare had an effect on World War I, it is important to speak of why this tactic was resorted to.
